NEET Questions- Chapter-3 Plant Kingdom 1. The system of plant classification proposed by Carolus Linnaeus was artificial because a) It was based on evolutionary relationship of plants b) It was based on similarities and differences in floral and other morphological characters only c) It took into account the physiological facts along with the morphological characters d) None of the above 2. Linnaeus is credited with introducing a) The concept of inheritance b) Law of limiting factor c) Theory of heredity d) Binomial nomenclature 3. Out of the 4 widely known systems of classification one remains less phylogenetic and more natural and that is of a) Engler and Prantl b) Hutchinson c) Bentham and Hooker d) Rendle 4. The chief merit of Bentham and Hookers classification is that a) it is a natural system of classification of all group of plants b) a system based on evolutionary concept c) it also considered the phylogenetic aspect d) The description of taxa are based on actual examination of the specimens 5. ‘SystemaNaturae’ written by Linnaeus contains a list of a) 4000 species of plants b) 2000 species of plants c) 4200 species of plants d) 4200 species of animals 6. H-German Morina on Forner, 'German Intellectuals and the Challenge of Democratic Renewal: Culture and Politics after 1945' Review published on Monday, April 18, 2016 Sean A. Forner. German Intellectuals and the Challenge of Democratic Renewal: Culture and Politics after 1945. Cambridge: Cambridge University Press, 2014. xii +383 pp. $125.00 (cloth), ISBN 978-1-107-04957-4. Reviewed by Christina Morina (Friedrich-Schiller Universität Jena) Published on H-German (April, 2016) Commissioned by Nathan N. Orgill Envisioning Democracy: German Intellectuals and the Quest for Democratic Renewal in Postwar German As historians of twentieth-century Germany continue to explore the causes and consequences of National Socialism, Sean Forner’s book on a group of unlikely affiliates within the intellectual elite of postwar Germany offers a timely and original insight into the history of the prolonged “zero hour.” Tracing the connections and discussions amongst about two dozen opponents of Nazism, Forner explores the contours of a vibrant debate on the democratization, (self-) representation, and reeducation of Germans as envisioned by a handful of restless, self-perceived champions of the “other Germany.” He calls this loosely connected intellectual group a network of “engaged democrats,” a concept which aims to capture the broad “left” political spectrum they represented--from Catholic socialism to Leninist communism--as well as the relative openness and contingent nature of the intellectual exchange over the political “renewal” of Germany during a time when fixed “East” and “West” ideological fault lines were not quite yet in place. Forner enriches the already burgeoning historiography on postwar German democratization and the role of intellectuals with a profoundly integrative analysis of Eastern and Western perspectives.

  • Tell Es‐Sultan/Ancient Jericho in the Early Bronze Age Iv: a Summary
ROSAPAT 13 135 TELL ES‐SULTAN/ANCIENT JERICHO IN THE EARLY BRONZE AGE IV: A SUMMARY Daria Montanari* The attempt of this paper is to re-examine Early Bronze IV attestations recorded by the four expeditions1 that operated at Tell es-Sultan over more than one century, and to outline some general features in the light of recent discoveries made by Sapienza-MOTA-DACH Joint Expedition2. Keywords: Jericho; Early Bronze IV; scattered occupation; village; necropolis 1. FRAME OF THE EARLY BRONZE IV IN SOUTHERN LEVANT During the Early Bronze IV3 the Southern Levant was generally characterized by villages and settlements dispersed in marginal areas, with seasonal occupation and sedentary nearby perennial streams, according to pastoral-nomad economy and domestic production, with gradual sedentarization throughout the end of the period4. This rural society5 had a tribal structure that can be reconstructed also thanks to numerous shaft-tomb cemeteries and distinguished mortuary practices6, as it is in the case of Jericho. 2. TELL ES-SULTAN/ANCIENT JERICHO: THE SITE IN THE EARLY BRONZE IV First attestation of Early Bronze IV on the mound was recognized by Ernst Sellin and Carl Watzinger, in facts Captain Warren7 in his previous soundings (1868) had unwittingly discovered in the southern side of the mound just a few sherds dating back from the final phase of the Early Bronze Age, but they were identified only later by Kathleen Kenyon8. * Sapienza University of Rome, Department of Oriental Studies. 1 Sellin - Watzinger 1908; 1913; Garstang 1930; 1931; 1932a; 1932b; 1932c; 1933; 1934; 1935a; 1935b; Garstang - Ben-Dor - Fitzgerald 1936; Kenyon 1954; 1955; 1957; 1960; 1965; 1981; Kenyon - Holland 1982; 1983; Marchetti - Nigro 1998; 2000; Marchetti et al.

NAHME - CHAPTER 3 DRAFT- NOT FOR CITATION Chapter 3 Race, Religion, and Identity: the (Theo-)Politics of Kantianism and the Predicament of German Jewish Liberalism In the century since their first, limited experience of emancipation in 1812, many German Jews gained an increasing awareness of the strengths and weaknesses of appealing to civic rights and individual freedoms to seek recognition in German public institutions. On the one hand, these liberal ideals of freedom and equality, duty and obligation to the rational legal state (Rechtstaat) gave German Jews a sense of belonging to the German Fatherland and held up the image of the rights-bearing citizen as an ideal to strive toward. But on the other hand, as we saw in the previous chapter, the Jewish Question was also increasingly framed as a problem implicit in the developing discourse of liberalism and gave rise to an anxiety over the secularization of political and moral public discourse about values, norms, and social ideals in Wilhelmine Germany. The Jewish Question, as I argued, was both an epistemological and a political predicament. Whether all “Germans” acknowledged Jews as belonging to a community and fraternity of national identity is less important, however, than the diversity in normative goals represented by the introduction of a liberal philosophical worldview in Imperial Germany as the means for articulating a still inchoate national identity. And because the Jews, like many of their compatriots, participated in a collective imagining of what a “civic” identity could be, their engagement with both the liberalism and idealism of the late nineteenth century gives voice to the significant influence of 197 NAHME - CHAPTER 3 DRAFT- NOT FOR CITATION this intellectual worldview on the broader social and cultural moment.

  • The Botanical Exploration of Angola by Germans During the 19Th and 20Th Centuries, with Biographical Sketches and Notes on Collections and Herbaria
Blumea 65, 2020: 126–161 www.ingentaconnect.com/content/nhn/blumea RESEARCH ARTICLE https://doi.org/10.3767/blumea.2020.65.02.06 The botanical exploration of Angola by Germans during the 19th and 20th centuries, with biographical sketches and notes on collections and herbaria E. Figueiredo1, *, G.F. Smith1, S. Dressler 2 Key words Abstract A catalogue of 29 German individuals who were active in the botanical exploration of Angola during the 19th and 20th centuries is presented. One of these is likely of Swiss nationality but with significant links to German Angola settlers in Angola. The catalogue includes information on the places of collecting activity, dates on which locations botanical exploration were visited, the whereabouts of preserved exsiccata, maps with itineraries, and biographical information on the German explorers collectors. Initial botanical exploration in Angola by Germans was linked to efforts to establish and expand Germany’s plant collections colonies in Africa. Later exploration followed after some Germans had settled in the country. However, Angola was never under German control. The most intense period of German collecting activity in this south-tropical African country took place from the early-1870s to 1900. Twenty-four Germans collected plant specimens in Angola for deposition in herbaria in continental Europe, mostly in Germany. Five other naturalists or explorers were active in Angola but collections have not been located under their names or were made by someone else. A further three col- lectors, who are sometimes cited as having collected material in Angola but did not do so, are also briefly discussed. Citation: Figueiredo E, Smith GF, Dressler S.

  • Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research
Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research Gisela Eberhardt Fabian Link (eds.) BERLIN STUDIES OF THE ANCIENT WORLD has become increasingly diverse in recent years due to developments in the historiography of the sciences and the human- ities. A move away from hagiography and presentations of scientifi c processes as an inevitable progression has been requested in this context. Historians of archae- olo gy have begun to utilize approved and new histo- rio graphical concepts to trace how archaeological knowledge has been acquired as well as to refl ect on the historical conditions and contexts in which knowledge has been generated. This volume seeks to contribute to this trend. By linking theories and models with case studies from the nineteenth and twentieth century, the authors illuminate implications of communication on archaeological knowledge and scrutinize routines of early archaeological practices. The usefulness of di erent approaches such as narratological concepts or the concepts of habitus is thus considered. berlin studies of 32 the ancient world berlin studies of the ancient world · 32 edited by topoi excellence cluster Historiographical Approaches to Past Archaeological Research edited by Gisela Eberhardt Fabian Link Bibliographic information published by the Deutsche Nationalbibliothek The Deutsche Nationalbibliothek lists this publication in the Deutsche Nationalbibliographie; detailed bibliographic data are available in the Internet at http://dnb.d-nb.de. © 2015 Edition Topoi / Exzellenzcluster Topoi der Freien Universität Berlin und der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin Typographic concept and cover design: Stephan Fiedler Printed and distributed by PRO BUSINESS digital printing Deutschland GmbH, Berlin ISBN 978-3-9816384-1-7 URN urn:nbn:de:kobv:11-100233492 First published 2015 The text of this publication is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC 3.0 DE.
