Principals’ Letter – Autumn Term 2019 th Week ending 11 October 2019 Dear Parents/Carers Last week we had one of our regular Parent Council meetings and we’d like to thank the parents/carers that attended for their feedback; much of which we’ve been able to act on already. For any parent/carer that feels they can positively contribute ideas and opinions to help us ‘improve upon our best’ Miss Cunningham would be delighted to see you at the next meeting, which will be advertised in a future letter. One of the ideas that was raised was for us to let parents/carers know the timetable for our after-school examination booster classes. This will be with you next week and hopefully you will be able to help your child to take advantage of the extensive opportunities on offer. This week Mr King was full of enthusiasm about the summer projects completed by Year 7. We think we have a record number of great pieces of work with over 70 being seen as excellent by the staff assessing them. This is a great way for Year 7 to show us just how hard working they are and the quality of work they can produce. Well done for making such a positive first impression Year 7. Finally, we’d like to thank you for engaging with Show My Homework as the feedback from staff this week is that there has been a noticeable improvement in homework completion and quality. This is a really positive change as the work being completed will make a significant difference to student success when they get their results in external exams and help them to learn the invaluable message that ‘if you work hard, success follows’. -

APPEALING FOR A PLACE AT A SECONDARY SCHOOL IN THE GEOGRAPHICAL COUNTY OF ESSEX (YEARS 7 TO 13) HOW DO I APPEAL? For most schools in Essex, you should complete the enclosed Notice of Appeal Form and return it to the address shown in the box at the top right hand corner on the Form. For some schools, you will need to deal directly with the school, as they do not buy in to the service offered by the Statutory Appeals Team – please see Appendix 2. For schools outside the Essex County Council area, you will need to contact them direct for details. Please note that a postal address showing Essex does not necessarily mean that the school is within the geographical county. Equally, a school may be situated within Essex but have a postal address of another county. We do not accept appeal forms by e-mail or by fax. We must receive the appeal form, both signed and dated, to begin the appeals process. In this document the word ‘appellant’ is used. That is usually the person having parental responsibility for the child. WHAT DO I NEED TO PUT IN MY GROUNDS OF APPEAL? You must fill in the information requested in Appendix 1. You must give your reasons why you want a place at the school for your child. Neither the School Admissions Team nor the Statutory Appeals Team can tell you what you should write. WHAT HAPPENS AFTER I SEND THE APPEAL FORM IN? The Statutory Appeals Team will write to you confirming receipt of your Appeal Form and any attached paperwork. -

Principals’ Letter – Autumn Term 2019 th Week ending 8 November 2019 Dear Parents/Carers How lovely to see so many parents and young people at our Year 7 Social Evening on Wednesday, what a great way to start this half term. Your feedback and engagement is really appreciated. For you all, there are still so many surprises and opportunities ahead. For our Year 11s, the time has arrived again to prepare and practice for their GCSEs exams as they start their mocks on Monday. These two weeks are intense and we wish them well but more importantly we encourage them to use the support mechanisms available at home and school. Revision is crucial but so is the space and time to self-regulate and nothing is more important than sleep. Health & Safety Reminder: Can we remind everyone that aerosols of any kind are not permitted in the school. This follows some potentially serious asthma attacks resulting from the use of sprays. We really appreciate everyone’s co-operation in this matter, but, as you will understand, the health and safety of everyone in the building is of vital importance. On this note, can we also remind you that we are a nut-free school so please remember to respect this health and safety protocol as well. Energy Drinks: We are seeing an increase in the number of energy drinks being bought into school. Can we remind students and parents/carers that energy drinks such as Red Bull, Monster and Lucozade etc are not permitted on site and that, if they are seen, they will be confiscated. -
