Susan Sokol Blosser Guide to the Sokol Blosser Winery Collection 1970-2010 Creator: Sokol Blosser Winery Title: Sokol Blosser Winery Collection Dates: 1970-2010 Quantity: 28 linear feet Collection Number: OWHA05 Summary: The Sokol Blosser Winery was established more than 40 years ago as one of the earliest wineries in the Dundee Hills. Founders Susan Sokol Blosser and Bill Blosser first produced wine in the late 1970s. Susan Sokol Blosser became the president of the winery in 1991 and was among the pioneers in sustainable winemaking practices and also helped found the ¡Salud! health care program. The collection contains business and vineyard records as well as historical winery and family records. Digital items selected to highlight the collection are available here: http://digitalcommons.linfield.edu/owha_sokol/. Collection items available in the digital repository can include documents, photographs and/or oral history interviews. Repository Jereld R. Nicholson Library Linfield College 900 SE Baker Street McMinnville, OR 97128 Reference Number: 503-883-2734 Reference Email: [email protected] Language: English Historical Note Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser bought their first land in 1970, an abandoned prune orchard 30 miles south of Portland. In 1971, they cleared the land and planted their first vines. The winery was completed in 1977, in time to produce their first house vintage. In 1980, the vineyard increased to 72 acres, and Bill became the full-time president of operations, with Susan taking over as vineyard manager. In this role, Susan experimented with Page | 1 covercrop as a means to reduce erosion on hillside vineyards, for which she received an award from the U.S. Soil and Water Conservation District. In 1991, Susan became the president of the vineyard. In 1996, Sokol Blosser Vineyards became the first vineyard to be certified “Salmon-Safe.” The next year, the vineyards joined LIVE (Low Input Viticulture and Enology), and in 2002 Sokol Blosser began a shift to becoming organic, and their barrel cellar received LEED certification. The second generation, Alex and Allison Sokol Blosser, became co-presidents in 2008. Content Description The collection contains mostly paper documents, but there can also be found an audio recording, a few photo sets, some poster boards, and a medal. This collection was largely compiled by Susan and Bill Sokol Blosser over the years that they ran the winery. The records consist of mostly business, finance, and publicity, but there is also a plethora of information about the history and the day to day proceedings of the winery. Information on the wine, the vines, the buildings, the properties, the people, the associates, the business, and the founder are included in the collection. Restrictions on Access Access to the collection must be approved by the Sokol Blosser family. Please contact the archivist to inquire about access. • 2016 Evolution Pinot Noir
2016 Evolution Pinot Noir VINTAGE: 2016 APPELLATION: 100% Willamette Valley AVA GRAPE VARIETIES USED: 100% Pinot Noir ALCOHOL: 13.5% RESIDUAL SUGAR: 3.4 g/L LENGTH AND TYPE OF AGING: 100% stainless steel aged with oak staves DATE BOTTLED: March 2017 BOTTLE AGING PRIOR TO RELEASE: 9 months LIFESPAN IN A PROPER CELLAR: 5-7 years NUMBER OF CASES PRODUCED: 3,824 cases SUGGESTED RETAIL: $20 VINTAGE SUMMARY: Every growing season in the northern Willamette Valley is different and in our 45th growing year at Sokol Blosser we saw something very special: our earliest bloom on record. While we had bud break later in 2016 than we had in 2015, the warm weather in April and May progressed the vine growth enough to push up bloom. You can just about set your clock from the time of bloom to the first day of harvest…100 days. When we had bloom on May 20th (Mid-June is more typical for the start of bloom) we could see that August 28th would be the start of harvest. An August start date is not scary, it just is what mother nature gives you. We all took our summer vacations in July and were ready to go by mid-August so we could bring in some fruit for our sparkling wine programs on August 19th. It was not an especially dry year as we got our typical dump of rain during the winter of 15/16, and even had some wet weather during our early bloom in May/June which ended up destroying a lot of the clusters.

  • 65032 Tuality Salud Booklet 2020.Indd
WELCOME 2020 is a year of change. In every corner of the world, and in every area of our own lives, things are very different than they were one year ago. And with that change, there has been struggle. A struggle to find new ways of doing what must be done, a struggle to let go of what can no longer be, and for some, a struggle to survive. Between the moments of struggle, remarkable adaptation has taken root – growing despite challenge. Together, we have created, we have collaborated, and we have adapted. Still in progress, and evolving, but from challenge has risen a new recognition of the ways in which we are connected. So here we are – somewhat disconnected physically, but adapting together to create solutions for the evolving challenge of healthcare disparities in our community. Thank you for showing up to create a strong, stable safety net of accessible, affordable healthcare for Oregon’s vineyard workers and their families. Thank you for saying yes to acknowledging your actions, your contributions can help shape the storyline of this challenging year, and strengthen our response for the future. ¡Salud! • Evolution Brut Sparkling, 4Th Edition
Evolution Brut Sparkling, 4th Edition VINTAGE: Non-Vintage BRAND: Evolution TYPE: Méthode Traditionelle APPELLATION: American ALCOHOL: 11.5% TA: 7.9 g/L pH: 3.15 DOSAGE: 8g/L (Brut) VARIETALS USED: Semillon, Müller-Thurgau, White Riesling, Pinot Gris, Gewurztraminer, Early Muscat, Chardonnay NUMBER OF CASES PRODUCED: ~4,500 cases SUGGESTED RETAIL: $20 WINEMAKER SUMMARY & TASTING NOTES: The great sparkling wines of the world are blends or as the French would say, “Assemblage,” of multiple grape varietals, from multiple vintages, with different oak treatments, and differing levels of malolactic fermentation. These wines are blended to make a complex sparkling wine that matches the taste profile desired by the winemaking team. With this in mind, we have thought for many years that Evolution would make an amazing base wine for the production of a true, méthode traditionelle, sparkling wine. So, here it is. With the foundation of Evolution White in mind we have created another dimension in the Evolution line up. We have taken the same varietals that we know make a fantastic white wine but have harvested, processed and fermented them with sparkling wine production in mind. We then blended these special wines into a single interesting base wine, put it into bottle and added a little more yeast for another fermentation in the bottle. This fermentation results in the beautiful bubbles we look forward to in opening and sharing a sparkling wine. After fermentation in bottle is complete we open each bottle, put a little splash of sweetness in to create a balanced wine, put a cork in the bottle and send it on its way to be enjoyed by everyone.

  • Goosepen Block Estate Pinot Noir 2016 Our Story Began in 1971 When Our Parents, Susan Sokol and Bill Blosser, First Planted Vines in Oregon’S Dundee Hills
Goosepen Block Estate Pinot Noir 2016 Our story began in 1971 when our parents, Susan Sokol and Bill Blosser, first planted vines in Oregon’s Dundee Hills. As second generation winegrowers, we are passionately committed to our family’s legacy of creating world-class wines, through sustainable methods, which express our distinctive hillside vineyards. — Alex & Alison Sokol Blosser VINTAGE HIGHLIGHTS It was a dark and stormy night…and that was just the first day of 2017! Yes, 2017 started out like a number of Oregon vintages have started out: cold, wet and rainy. In fact, to start out 2017 we had snow. Snow shut down the winery for a number of days in January and this cold weather foretold the following cool spring. Bud break was late in relation to the past 5 years (late April instead of early April), but more normal when you look at our 40+ growing seasons. The cool, wet weather was not to last, and the heat volcano erupted in mid-June to the tune of 95°F! Thanks to the wonderful deluge of wet weather in the winter and spring of 2017, our vines were able to handle the scorching hot summer. Our underground barrel cellar reached temps we have never seen before (in the 70s) and the expanding wine pushed some bungs out. The cool spring helped push out harvest, but the hot summer helped make sure the grapes were ready to go with little delay. We picked over a six week time period, which is a week or so longer than normal due to the rain events.
