Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District Are Oregon's Newest
171 views | Jun 10, 2020, 12:24pm EDT Tualatin Hills And The Laurelwood District Are Oregon’s Newest American Viticultural Areas Joseph V Micallef Contributor Spirits I write about wines and spirits and the hidden corners of the world Ponzi Vineyard, View from Aurora Vineyard PHOTO COURTESY PONZI VINEYARDS/ANDREA JOHNSON AERIALS Two new American Viticultural Areas (AVA) have been announced by the Alcohol and Tobacco Tax and Trade Bureau (TTB). Located in the northern end of Oregon’s Willamette Valley, in the heart of Oregon’s Pinot Noir producing zone, the two new AVAs are Tualatin Hills and the Laurelwood District. The two AVAs, which are partially adjacent to one another, are notable for containing among the highest concentrations of Laurelwood soils in Oregon. Laurelwood soils consist of an exceptionally fine windblown soil called loess. It consists predominantly of silt-sized sediment that was formed by the accumulation of wind-blown dust and was produced by the grinding down of basaltic and other volcanic rocks by glaciers during the last ice age. They emphasize flavors of cherry, blackberry and spice. These wines offer a lighter, elegant style and texture with well-defined tannins, which is markedly different than the earthier, more robust, black fruit centered styles typical of Oregon’s sedimentary soils. -

JWE 10 3 Bookreviews 382..384
382 Book and Film Reviews VIVIAN PERRY and JOHN VINCENT: Winemakers of the Willamette Valley: Pioneering Vintners from Oregon’s Wine Country. American Palate, Charleston, South Carolina, 2013, 160 pp., ISBN: 978-1609496760 (paperback), $19.99. CILA WARNCKE: Oregon Wine Pioneers. Vine Lives Publishing, Portland, Oregon, 2015, 234 pp., ISBN: 978-1943090761 (paperback), $19.99. Admittedly, it was hard to write a dispassionate review of books that so lovingly describe the region in which I live and so admiringly profile many of my acquain- tances in the Oregon wine industry. Therefore, I used as measures of merit how well each echoed my impressions of this most beautiful area and its people, and whether each accomplished its objectives. Perry’s and Vincent’s Winemakers of the Willamette Valley (WWV) “is meant to showcase the stories of a handful of Oregon’s many Willamette Valley winemakers” (WWV, p. 11). A foreword by Chehalem founder Harry Peterson-Nedry sets the per- sonal tone that pervades those stories. Next, in a mere eight pages of text, the first chapter, “History of the Willamette Valley Wine Region,” covers the climate, soil, grape selection, craftsmanship, industry structure and early success in sufficient detail to provide valuable context. The authors then share intimate interviews with eighteen vintners and vignerons. Within each chapter named for one or two wine- makers are brief descriptions of the wineries that each is affiliated with. These include year founded, ownership, varietals, tasting room location, hours and con- tacts. Sustainability features, a point of pride in the Oregon wine industry, are also listed. -

2016 Evolution Pinot Noir VINTAGE: 2016 APPELLATION: 100% Willamette Valley AVA GRAPE VARIETIES USED: 100% Pinot Noir ALCOHOL: 13.5% RESIDUAL SUGAR: 3.4 g/L LENGTH AND TYPE OF AGING: 100% stainless steel aged with oak staves DATE BOTTLED: March 2017 BOTTLE AGING PRIOR TO RELEASE: 9 months LIFESPAN IN A PROPER CELLAR: 5-7 years NUMBER OF CASES PRODUCED: 3,824 cases SUGGESTED RETAIL: $20 VINTAGE SUMMARY: Every growing season in the northern Willamette Valley is different and in our 45th growing year at Sokol Blosser we saw something very special: our earliest bloom on record. While we had bud break later in 2016 than we had in 2015, the warm weather in April and May progressed the vine growth enough to push up bloom. You can just about set your clock from the time of bloom to the first day of harvest…100 days. When we had bloom on May 20th (Mid-June is more typical for the start of bloom) we could see that August 28th would be the start of harvest. An August start date is not scary, it just is what mother nature gives you. We all took our summer vacations in July and were ready to go by mid-August so we could bring in some fruit for our sparkling wine programs on August 19th. It was not an especially dry year as we got our typical dump of rain during the winter of 15/16, and even had some wet weather during our early bloom in May/June which ended up destroying a lot of the clusters. -

WELCOME 2020 is a year of change. In every corner of the world, and in every area of our own lives, things are very different than they were one year ago. And with that change, there has been struggle. A struggle to find new ways of doing what must be done, a struggle to let go of what can no longer be, and for some, a struggle to survive. Between the moments of struggle, remarkable adaptation has taken root – growing despite challenge. Together, we have created, we have collaborated, and we have adapted. Still in progress, and evolving, but from challenge has risen a new recognition of the ways in which we are connected. So here we are – somewhat disconnected physically, but adapting together to create solutions for the evolving challenge of healthcare disparities in our community. Thank you for showing up to create a strong, stable safety net of accessible, affordable healthcare for Oregon’s vineyard workers and their families. Thank you for saying yes to acknowledging your actions, your contributions can help shape the storyline of this challenging year, and strengthen our response for the future. ¡Salud!
