BROWN Department of Biology, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida 33620 A survey of the Lepidoptera found on the islands of Biscayne National Monument, Florida, in April and May 1972, revealed sizeable breeding populations of two rare papilionid butterflies. These are the Bahaman Swallowtail (Papilio andraemon bonhotei Sharpe) and Schaus' Swallow tail (Papilio aristodemus ponceanus Schaus). The former species has been recorded only a few times in Florida (Holland, 1902; Clarke, 1940; Kimball, 1965) and until now has been considered only a stray or acci dental visitor to United States shores following hurricanes. -

GROCE Departments of Zoology and Entomology, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, USA ABSTRACT.- Females of the Schaus Swallowtail (aristodemus ponceanus Schaus) lay dark green eggs and light green eggs in an approximately 1:2 ratio in the wild on Elliott Key, Biscayne National Park, southern Florida. This color dimorphism may be maintained as a balanced polymorphism by selection for cryptic matching of new and old growth foliage of the primary larval hostplant, torchwood (Amyris elemifera, Rutaceae). The Schaus Swallowtail (Papilio aristodemus ponceanus Schaus) once reportedly ranged from Key West to south Miami in Florida; today, it is found only in the upper Florida Keys and has been close to extinction for about two decades (Emmel, 1985; Emmel and Minno, 1986, 1988; Minno and Emmel, 1993). While undertaking mark-recapture and captive propagation studies of P. a. ponceanus on Elliott Key in Biscayne National Park, Florida, in late May of 1991, the authors observed that several females which had been confined in a large flight cage produced two different color eggs (Fig. 1). The purpose of this paper is to report our observations, suggest a possible selective basis for this color dimorphism, and compare the situation with that found in other butterflies. -

The importance of the osmeterial gland, a universal characteristic of larvae in the Papilionidae, in defense against vertebrate predators has rarely been ex amined. In this study, third and fifth instar larvae of Papilio polyxenes with and without a functional osmeterium were presented to Coturnix coturnix (Japanese quail), a rep resentative avian predator. Virtually all larvae were rejected by C. coturnix irrespective of osmeterial function. Larvae of P. cresphontes with functional osmeteria were also universally rejected by C. coturnix; in contrast, larvae of P. glaucus were readily con sumed. In view of the fact that osmeterial secretions in these three species are similar in composition, they are unlikely to playa major role in determining palatability of these species to this avian predator. The osmeterium, a Y-shaped eversible gland located mid-dorsally behind the head, is a universal characteristic of swallowtail caterpillars (Papilionidae). Its function has long been assumed to be defensive (Merian 1705, as cited in Crossley & Waterhouse 1969). There is indeed evidence of the efficacy of the osmeterial gland and its secretions against invertebrate predators. Eisner and Meinwald (1965) demonstrated that Papilio machaon L. larvae use osmeterial secretions to deter ant pre dation; Damman (1986) determined that the presence of a functional osmeterial gland of Eurytides marcellus (Cramer) reduces predation by ants and small spiders, and Chow and Tsai (1989) showed that Papilio memnon L. -

Sentinels on the Wing The Status and Conservation of Butterflies in Canada Peter W. Hall Foreword In Canada, our ties to the land are strong and deep. Whether we have viewed the coasts of British Columbia or Cape Breton, experienced the beauty of the Arctic tundra, paddled on rivers through our sweeping boreal forests, heard the wind in the prairies, watched caribou swim the rivers of northern Labrador, or searched for song birds in the hardwood forests of south eastern Canada, we all call Canada our home and native land. Perhaps because Canada’s landscapes are extensive and cover a broad range of diverse natural systems, it is easy for us to assume the health of our important natural spaces and the species they contain. Our country seems so vast compared to the number of Canadians that it is difficult for us to imagine humans could have any lasting effect on nature. Yet emerging science demonstrates that our natural systems and the species they contain are increas- ingly at risk. While the story is by no means complete, key indicator species demonstrate that Canada’s natural legacy is under pressure from a number of sources, such as the conversion of lands for human uses, the release of toxic chemicals, the introduction of new, invasive species or the further spread of natural pests, and a rapidly changing climate. These changes are hitting home and, with the globalization and expansion of human activities, it is clear the pace of change is accelerating. While their flights of fancy may seem insignificant, butterflies are sentinels or early indicators of this change, and can act as important messengers to raise awareness. -

Basavarajappa* Entomology Laboratory, DOS in Zoology University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore-570 006, India ABSTRACT: Field studies were carried out by following various standard methods to record the natural enemies of 19 butterfly species during Rabi and Kharif crops amidst agriculture ecosystems of Chamarajanagar District (110401 to 120481 NL and 740521 to 760071 EL) in south Deccan plateau at southern tip of Karnataka State, India. The oviposition and pupation of butterfly species were critically observed for the parasites and predators attack. The death of egg, pupa, larva and adult butterfly species due to parasitoids and spiders was recorded. The parasitoid, Brachymeria jambolana (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) was more troublesome to the pupa of G. doson and E. core. Around 25 to 27 B. jambolana adult individuals were collected respectively from the pupa of G. doson and E. core. Moreover spider species viz., Selenopes, Zygeilla, Argiope, Hippasa, and Rhene become common predators to 16 butterfly species in this part of the State. Thus, parasitoids and spiders infestation could cause loss to several insect species including protected species like E. core. As natural enemy’s interferences is natural in the wild/open cultivated conditions, it could become one of the major reasons to reduce local butterfly diversity. Hence, there is a dire need to understand about the interaction of parasitoid species with butterfly species which are under threat and whose presence is very essential for the restoration of local biodiversity.
