DANIELS, MARC C. MINNO, THOMAS C. EMMEL, PETER J. ELIAZAR, AND LESLIE L. GROCE Departments of Zoology and Entomology, University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, USA ABSTRACT.- Females of the Schaus Swallowtail (aristodemus ponceanus Schaus) lay dark green eggs and light green eggs in an approximately 1:2 ratio in the wild on Elliott Key, Biscayne National Park, southern Florida. This color dimorphism may be maintained as a balanced polymorphism by selection for cryptic matching of new and old growth foliage of the primary larval hostplant, torchwood (Amyris elemifera, Rutaceae). The Schaus Swallowtail (Papilio aristodemus ponceanus Schaus) once reportedly ranged from Key West to south Miami in Florida; today, it is found only in the upper Florida Keys and has been close to extinction for about two decades (Emmel, 1985; Emmel and Minno, 1986, 1988; Minno and Emmel, 1993). While undertaking mark-recapture and captive propagation studies of P. a. ponceanus on Elliott Key in Biscayne National Park, Florida, in late May of 1991, the authors observed that several females which had been confined in a large flight cage produced two different color eggs (Fig. 1). The purpose of this paper is to report our observations, suggest a possible selective basis for this color dimorphism, and compare the situation with that found in other butterflies. -

EMMEL Department of Zoology, University of Florida, Gainesville, FL 32611, USA ABSTRACT.- Observations of the occurrence of dark and light color patterns in early instar larvae of Papilio species suggest that they may be selected for disruptive coloration, mimicry of bird droppings, or mimicry of lizard droppings, depending upon size of the larval stage and relative occurrence of appropriate models in the species' habitat. Corrections are given for 58 North American butterfly books. Most of these books are recent. Misidentified figures mostly of adults, erroneous hostplants, and other mistakes are corrected in each book. Suggestions are made to improve future butterfly books. Identifications of figured specimens in Holland's 1931 & 1898 Butterfly Book & 1915 Butterfly Guide are corrected, and their type status clarified, and corrections are made to F. M. Brown's series of papers on Edwards; types (many figured by Holland), because some of Holland's 75 lectotype designations override lectotype specimens that were designated later, and several dozen Holland lectotype designations are added to the J. Pelham Catalogue. Type locality designations are corrected/defined here (some made by Brown, most by others), for numerous names: aenus, artonis, balder, bremnerii, brettoides, brucei (Oeneis), caespitatis, cahmus, callina, carus, colon, colorado, coolinensis, comus, conquista, dacotah, damei, dumeti, edwardsii (Oarisma), elada, epixanthe, eunus, fulvia, furcae, garita, hermodur, kootenai, lagus, mejicanus, mormo, mormonia, nilus, nympha, oreas, oslari, philetas, phylace, pratincola, rhena, saga, scudderi, simius, taxiles, uhleri. Data are also provided for specimens in the collections of the McGuire Center for Lepidoptera which were collected on the base prior to our studies, as well as those collected in areas surrounding the base in 1994-95. Larval hosts and adult nectar sources are summarized for the 51 species recorded from the base since 1962. Vegetative habitats, climate, and geomorphology of the area are described and biogeographic patterns discussed. Distribution summaries are given with special reference to endemic and invasive species.
