Hebert3 1 Department of Biology, University of Pennsylvania, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, United States of America, 2 Department of Entomology, National Museum of Natural History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington, D.C., United States of America, 3 Department of Integrative Biology, Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, University of Guelph, Guelph, Canada Abstract Background: An intense, 30-year, ongoing biodiversity inventory of Lepidoptera, together with their food plants and parasitoids, is centered on the rearing of wild-caught caterpillars in the 120,000 terrestrial hectares of dry, rain, and cloud forest of Area de Conservacion Guanacaste (ACG) in northwestern Costa Rica. Since 2003, DNA barcoding of all species has aided their identification and discovery. We summarize the process and results for a large set of the species of two speciose subfamilies of ACG skipper butterflies (Hesperiidae) and emphasize the effectiveness of barcoding these species (which are often difficult and time-consuming to identify). Methodology/Principal Findings: Adults are DNA barcoded by the Biodiversity Institute of Ontario, Guelph, Canada; and they are identified by correlating the resulting COI barcode information with more traditional information such as food plant, facies, genitalia, microlocation within ACG, caterpillar traits, etc. This process has found about 303 morphologically defined species of eudamine and pyrgine Hesperiidae breeding in ACG (about 25% of the ACG butterfly fauna) and another 44 units indicated by distinct barcodes (n = 9,094), which may be additional species and therefore may represent as much as a 13% increase. -

However, where acknowledging these two species as separate (following Irwin and Barneby 1982), in terms of their agronomic importance and control, there is probably little difference between S. obtusifolia and S. tora, and both are included together for the purpose of this datasheet. BROWN Department of Biology, University of South Florida, Tampa, Florida 33620 A survey of the Lepidoptera found on the islands of Biscayne National Monument, Florida, in April and May 1972, revealed sizeable breeding populations of two rare papilionid butterflies. These are the Bahaman Swallowtail (Papilio andraemon bonhotei Sharpe) and Schaus' Swallow tail (Papilio aristodemus ponceanus Schaus). The former species has been recorded only a few times in Florida (Holland, 1902; Clarke, 1940; Kimball, 1965) and until now has been considered only a stray or acci dental visitor to United States shores following hurricanes. -

University of Dhaka, Hence the total number of butterflies of a certain region should be well documented. In the field survey Bangladesh. of Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary and Madhabkunda Eco Park, we found two butterflies which are new to Shawan Chowdhury Bangladesh, according to the most recent checklist. The Plane (Bindahara phocides, Fabricus) was Department of Zoology, recorded from Pablakhali Wildlife Sanctuary and Orange Tail Awl (Bibasis sena, Moore) from University of Dhaka, Madhabkunda Eco Park. Though Plane was recorded by Gladman (1947) and Emmet (1948) but Larsen Bangladesh. did not find this species. In addition, no one ever recorded Orange Tail Awl from this region. Keywords: Biodiversity, Bibasis sena, Bindahara phocides, Conservation, Discovery Introduction Tropical regions are very rich in biodiversity but we know very little about them. Because of that, almost 40000 already estimates to have gone extinct over the past 600 years, only 70 have been documented, half of which were Lepidoptera [1]. The world contains roughly 18000- 20000 species of butterflies, of which most are distributed in the tropical region [2, 3]. Butterflies are a biodiversity indicator group and the redundancy of a forest or an area largely depends upon the abundance and diversity of butterflies [4]. -

Dedication RICHARD FFRENCH was born in England and shortly after gra duating from Oxford University came to the West Indies with his wife Margaret. He lived in Barbados for three years and then came to Trinidad to teach at St Peter's School, Pointe-a'-Pierre. His interest in birds was alreadY well developed bu t so was his interest in music and he contributed much to the cultural life of Trinidad and Tobago in both of these fields. He is a past president of the Trinidad and Tobago Field Naturalists' Club and edited its jour nal for a number of years. He was also chairman of the Board of Management of the Asa Wright Nature Centre for some years and served as a member of the board after his term as chairman. From his arrival in Trinidad to his departure in April 1985 he studied the avifauna of our two islands and produced his Guide to the Birds of Trinidad and Tobago in 1973. It is now in its fourth edition. A smaller (and cheaper) guide to the common birds has just been published and shDuld introduce the study of birds to an even wider pUblic. He has published several papers in this journal and in others and with Peter Bacon wrote Nature Trails of Trinidad. -

A small pie rid was collected while in flight on November 24, 1960. Dr. A. B. KLOTS confirmed that it was Eurema daira !lydia Felder, and said that this is certainly one of the few authentic records of this sub species from Texas. This specimen was contributed to the American Museum of Natural History, New York. I have this to report on Phocides polybius lilea Reakirt (syn. sanguinea Scud. ) : A ragged P. lilea adult female was collected by me in Brownsville on August 28, 1958. In the spring of 1959, several more specimens were captured in flight. Sincc that time P. lilea could be found during the summer and fall months frequenting the blossoms of male Papaya trees. A gravid female was taken on August 15, 1960, and an attempt was made to get her to oviposit on the following series of plants: Papaya, Bougainvilla, Hibiscus, and Banana leaves. -

ARIZONA WILDLIFE CONSERVATION ARIZONA WILDLIFE NOTEBOOK GARRY ROGERS Praise for Arizona Wildlife Notebook “Arizona Wildlife Notebook” by Garry Rogers is a comprehensive checklist of wildlife species existing in the State of Arizona. This notebook provides a brief description for each of eleven (11) groups of wildlife, conservation status of all extant species within that group in Arizona, alphabetical listing of species by common name, scientific names, and room for notes. “The Notebook is a statewide checklist, intended for use by wildlife watchers all over the state. As various individuals keep track of their personal observations of wildlife in their specific locality, the result will be a more selective checklist specific to that locale. Such information would be vitally useful to the State Wildlife Conservation Department, as well as to other local agencies and private wildlife watching groups. “This is a very well-documented snapshot of the status of wildlife species – from bugs to bats – in the State of Arizona. Much of it should be relevant to neighboring states, as well, with a bit of fine-tuning to accommodate additions and deletions to the list. “As a retired Wildlife Biologist, I have to say Rogers’ book is perhaps the simplest to understand, yet most comprehensive in terms of factual information, that I have ever had occasion to peruse. This book should become the default checklist for Arizona’s various state, federal and local conservation agencies, and the basis for developing accurate local inventories by private enthusiasts as well as public agencies. "Arizona Wildlife Notebook" provides a superb starting point for neighboring states who may wish to emulate Garry Rogers’ excellent handiwork. -
