More than ¼ of the population resides in the province area of Florence, while other areas with significant population density are Pisa (11%) and Lucca (11%). Demographic projections estimate more than 4 million residents by 2030. There are more than 396,000 resident foreigners (10.6%) and the difference in age with respect to Italians is significant: on average about 33 years compared with 47 years for Tuscans. Among the 174 nationalities present, the Romanian (21%) and Albanian (17.8%) communities are the most numerous, followed by the Chinese (11%) and Moroccan (7%) communities. Although there has been a slowdown in migratory flows in recent years, mainly due to a reduction in the supply of labour, the region remains one of the most popular destinations in Italy. The population of Tuscany, like that of Italy and Europe is experiencing gradual ageing and the elderly now represent ¼ of the total.

Although neuroendoscopic biopsy is routinely performed, the safety and validity of this procedure has been studied only in small numbers of patients in single-center reports. The Section of Neuroendoscopy of the Italian Neurosurgical Society invited some of its members to review their own experience, gathering a sufficient number of cases for a wide analysis. Methods. Retrospective data were collected by 7 centers routinely performing neuroendoscopic biopsies over a period of 10 years. Sixty patients with newly diagnosed intraventricular and paraventricular tumors were included. No patient harboring a colloid cyst was included. Data regarding clinical presentation, neuroimaging findings, opera- tive techniques, pathological diagnosis, postoperative complications, and subsequent therapy were analyzed. Results. In all patients, a neuroendoscopic tumor biopsy was performed. In 38 patients (64%), obstructive hy- drocephalus was present.

  • New Opportunities for Cruise Tourism: the Case of Italian Historic Towns
sustainability Article New Opportunities for Cruise Tourism: The Case of Italian Historic Towns Stefania Mangano * and Gian Marco Ugolini Dipartimento di Scienze Politiche—DISPO, Università degli Studi di Genova, 16126 Genova, Italy; [email protected] * Correspondence: [email protected]; Tel.: +39-010-2095-1161 Received: 17 April 2020; Accepted: 2 June 2020; Published: 5 June 2020 Abstract: The cruise industry has grown worldwide in the last decades and, today, it is often associated with high levels of pollution and overtourism. This is especially true of areas where tourism cruises are a long-established sector, such as the Mediterranean and Italy in particular, where there is growing concern of the consequences of excessive pressure on popular tourist destinations. To reduce such side effects, it is necessary to develop new and sustainable tourism management policies. Our study explores the potential of the diversification of shore excursions offered by cruise lines to relieve pressure on popular destinations. As a case study, we focus on a subset of Italian villages that have received quality certifications (Bandiere arancioni and/or Borghi più belli d’Italia) because of their artistic, historical, cultural, and aesthetic values. Thanks to their proximity to major Italian ports, these villages offer opportunities for shore excursions alternative to some classic and very popular destinations such as Rome, Venice, Pisa, and Florence. The benefits of shore excursions to peripheral destinations are particularly relevant when visits include overnights. Keywords: cruise ships; shore excursions; Italian historic towns; environmental pressure 1. Introduction Cruise tourism is a growth sector around the world [1], and it is a particularly relevant theme in tourism studies.

  • Livorno: a Crossroads in the History of Sephardic Religious Music Prof
Page 1 of 12 Livorno: A Crossroads in the History of Sephardic Religious Music Prof. Edwin Seroussi This article appeared in the Spring 2003 issue of Notes from Zamir. From "The Mediterranean and the Jews: Society, Culture and Economy in Early Modern Times", edited by Elliott Horowitz and Moises Orfali I. INTRODUCTION The geographical location of Italy at the focal point of the Mediterranean cultures is reflected in the music traditions of its Jewish communities. Throughout the centuries, several musical traditions developed among Italian Jews: the "Italiano" rite (centered in Rome), the "Tedesco" (German, i.e. Ashkenazic) tradition in the North and, from the early 16th century, several Sephardic traditions of different geographical origin (Greece, Turkey, North Africa and, later on, Western Europe) *1 The vitality of these distinctive traditions declined steadily from the late 19th century, and even more sharply after World War II. The influence of Italian art music, particularly noticeable from the 19th century on, was also a significant factor in the shaping of their present state. Surviving synagogue music from Italy thus shows traces of the interaction between different traditions. *2 Detailed studies of selected traditions should, therefore, precede any comprehensive study of ltalian synagogue music. *3 I shall focus here on the synagogue music from Livorno (Leghorn) from the 18th century onwards. I would like to stress in particular the role played by this community as a cultural crossroads, that is, as a location where the carriers of different Sephardic traditions from the Eastern and Western Mediterranean encountered and enriched each other. In the 18th century the community of Livorno inherited the leadership of the Sephardic Jews in Italy from the community of Venice, as Bonfil (1992) has already stressed.

  • Data-Driven Planning for Sustainable Tourism in Tuscany Introduction
Data-Driven Planning for Sustainable Tourism in Tuscany Io Flament, Cristina Lozano, Momin M. Malik Data Science For Social Good Europe Summer Fellowship 2017 7 August, 2017 Introduction The region Tuscany and the city of Florence are top tourist destinations globally. The metropolitan city of Florence (1 million inhabitants) is the choice of over 5M tourists per (year 2016), with the number of tourists growing year-on-year (2016 has a 10% growth compared to 2012). The city center alone receives ~3.5 Million tourists every year. While tourism is a fundamental pillar of the economy of the city, there is a lively debate on the balance between the economic benefits of tourism, the impacts on the city fabric and resources, the degradation of communities and the loss of identity of places. The project partner (Toscana Promozione Turistica) and data partner (Vodafone Italy) are providing anonymized data that will be used to identify patterns of tourism in time and space. The Seton “Italian Connection ” An Adventure in Livorno by Monsignor Thomas P, Sandi, Pastor, St. Elizabeth Ann Seton Church, Shrub Oak, NY The New York import-export businessman, William Seton, the husband of the future Saint Elizabeth Bayley Seton, had fallen on hard times, went bankrupt in 1800, and became mortally ill in 1803. On October 1 st , the couple took their eldest daughter, Anina, and travelled to Livorno (Leghorn), the port city on the Ligurian Sea at the western edge of Tuscany, Italy, hoping the pure, clean sea air might affect a cure for the tuberculosis William had contracted. Quarantined for a month on an island because of an outbreak of yellow fever in New York, they eventually were allowed to disembark. Sadly, within 38 days, he succumbed to the disease, died two days after Christmas, and was buried in the local English cemetery. The crushed, young widow and her daughter had nowhere to turn other than the arms of their wealthy Italian hosts, the Fillicchi (fill-IC-key) family and received more than they ever could imagine. Eight-year old Anina remarked once, “ Oh, Mama, how many friends God has provided for us in this strange land, for they are our friends before they know us!” Born and bred an Episcopalian, Elizabeth found herself very moved by their devout Catholic faith, and the seeds of conversion to Catholicism were sown wide and deep with spiritual practices and apologetics presented in a form the widow Seton would understand. But the intense devotion of the Filicchis in the presence of the Blessed Sacrament touched her most profoundly and fortified her commitment to Catholicism.
