  • Book Proposal 3
Rock and Roll has Tender Moments too... ! Photographs by Chalkie Davies 1973-1988 ! For as long as I can remember people have suggested that I write a book, citing both my exploits in Rock and Roll from 1973-1988 and my story telling abilities. After all, with my position as staff photographer on the NME and later The Face and Arena, I collected pop stars like others collected stamps, I was not happy until I had photographed everyone who interested me. However, given that the access I had to my friends and clients was often unlimited and 24/7 I did not feel it was fair to them that I should write it all down. I refused all offers. Then in 2010 I was approached by the National Museum of Wales, they wanted to put on a retrospective of my work, this gave me a special opportunity. In 1988 I gave up Rock and Roll, I no longer enjoyed the music and, quite simply, too many of my friends had died, I feared I might be next. So I put all of my negatives into storage at a friends Studio and decided that maybe 25 years later the images you see here might be of some cultural significance, that they might be seen as more than just pictures of Rock Stars, Pop Bands and Punks. That they even might be worthy of a Museum. So when the Museum approached me three years ago with the idea of a large six month Retrospective in 2015 I agreed, and thought of doing the usual thing and making a Catalogue.

  • The White Noise Supremacists” (From the Village Voice, 1979)
LESTER BANGS “The White Noise Supremacists” (from the Village Voice, 1979) The other day I was talking on the phone with a friend who hangs out on the CBGB's scene a lot. She was regaling me with examples of the delights available to females in the New York subway system. "So the train came to a sudden halt and I fell on my ass in the middle of the car, and not only did nobody offer to help me up but all these boons just sat there laughing at me." "Boons?" I said. "What's boons?" "You know," she said. "Black guys." "Why do you call them that?" "I dunno. From `baboons,' I guess." I didn't say anything. "Look, I know it's not cool," she finally said. "But neither is being a woman in this city. Every fucking place you go you get these cats hassling you, and sometimes they try to pimp you. And a lot of the times when they hassle you they're black, and when they try to pimp me they're always black. Eventually you can't help it, you just end up reacting." Sometimes I think nothing is simple but the feeling of pain. When I was first asked to write this article, I said sure, because the racism (not to mention the sexism, which is even more pervasive and a whole other piece) on the American New Wave scene had been something that I'd been bothered by for a long time. When I told the guys in my own band that I was doing this, they just laughed.

Music 262: Rock Music, History and Social Analysis, NY Punk [Music Playing on Piano] [Brian Ward]: We also have this proto punk happening in New York City as well. In New York City, we start out with this band called The Velvet Underground. They were really a keystone to both punk rock and new wave artists that came later. They combined music and art. They were friends and had an important association with Andy Warhol and pop art. They were viewed as kind of dark and anti. The critics hated them because they weren’t very good musicians in the sense of being trained. But their music had a sort of appeal to it. It was a blend of high energy rock and adventurism, the avant-garde. They also brought realism to the music that wasn’t there before. They would sing about real-life situations with drugs and sex, kinkiness in their lyrics. They challenged conventional society in a way they had never really done before. They were also one of the first bands to really take this nihilistic approach with the philosophy of nothing matters at all. That sort of became the punk aesthetic that carried forth from The Velvet Underground. In 1967 they released this record. It’s called The Velvet Underground and Nico. Now this album was ignored when it was released. It didn’t sell many records. Since then it’s become one of the most influential records of rock n’ roll. It encouraged a lot of bands later on to go ahead and put together groups of indie bands, new wave, punk groups that heard this.

The GRAMMY Museum® and Queens Museum To Celebrate the Ramones' 40th Anniversary With A New Two-Part Exhibition Hey! Ho! Let’s Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk Debuts April 10, 2016 at Queens Museum in New York and in Los Angeles at the GRAMMY Museum on Oct. 21, 2016 LOS ANGELES/QUEENS (January 27, 2016) — The GRAMMY Museum® in Los Angeles and the Queens Museum in New York have announced they are partnering to present an unprecedented two-part exhibition celebrating the lasting influence of punk rock progenitors the Ramones. Hey! Ho! Let's Go: Ramones and the Birth of Punk will open on April 10, 2016, at the Queens Museum in New York. It then moves to Los Angeles on Oct. 21, 2016, where the second part will debut at the GRAMMY Museum in Los Angeles. The two-part exhibition, co-curated by the GRAMMY Museum at L.A. LIVE and the Queens Museum, in collaboration with Ramones Productions Inc., will commemorate the 40th anniversary of the release of the Ramones' 1976 self-titled debut album and will explore the lasting influence the punk rockers had on their hometown, from their start in Queens to their history-making performances at CBGB, highlighting their musical achievements, with a special influence on the dynamic synergy between New York City's music and visual arts scenes in the 1970s and 1980s. While the exhibition's two parts will share many key objects drawn from more than 50 public and private collection across the world, each will explore the Ramones through a different lens: The Queens Museum iteration will begin with their roots in Queens and reveal their ascendancy in both music and visual culture, while the GRAMMY Museum version will contextualize the band in the larger pantheon of music history and pop culture.
