Introduction The Sex Pistols’ “I Wanna Be Me” It gave us an identity. —Tom Petty on Beatlemania Wherever the relevance of speech is at stake, matters become political by definition, for speech is what makes man a political being. —Hannah Arendt, The Human Condition here fortune tellers sometimes read tea leaves as omens of things to come, there are now professionals who scrutinize songs, films, advertisements, and other artifacts of popular culture for what they reveal about the politics and the feel W of daily life at the time of their production. Instead of being consumed, they are historical artifacts to be studied and “read.” Or at least that is a common approach within cultural studies. But dated pop artifacts have another, living function. Throughout much of 1973 and early 1974, several working- class teens from west London’s Shepherd’s Bush district struggled to become a rock band. Like tens of thousands of such groups over the years, they learned to play together by copying older songs that they all liked. For guitarist Steve Jones and drummer Paul Cook, that meant the short, sharp rock songs of London bands like the Small Faces, the Kinks, and the Who. Most of the songs had been hits seven to ten 1 2 Introduction years earlier. They also learned some more current material, much of it associated with the band that succeeded the Small Faces, the brash “lad’s” rock of Rod Stewart’s version of the Faces. Ironically, the Rod Stewart songs they struggled to learn weren’t Rod Stewart songs at all.

  • Categorising Music Photography
The connection of music to studio and live photography: categorising music photography By Carolina Hernández de Toledo A thesis submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for MA in Journalism & Media Communications (QQI) Faculty of Journalism & Media Communications Griffith College August 2018 The connection of music to studio and live photography: categorising music photography Declaration I hereby certify that this material, which I now submit for assessment on the programme of study leading to the award of the MA in Journalism & Media Communications, is my own; based on my personal study and/or research, and that I have acknowledged all material and sources used in its preparation. I also certify that I have not copied in part or whole or otherwise plagiarised the work of anyone else, including other students. Signed: ___________________________ Dated: ___________________________ 1 Abstract Is music connected to live and studio photography creating a specific photographic category? This thesis question emerged from the interest in the visual identity of music, its lack of categorisation in the photographic genres and the critic status of photography in today’s media industry. The purpose of this dissertation is to understand how music is connected to studio and live photography creating the possibility for music photography to be a specific category of the photographic genres. The research design is conducted through a content analysis undertaken by the literature investigation, where the coding structure was extracted to analyse the composition of images through Bruce Block´s basic visual components, the interpretation of images by Roland Barthes and the classification on genres by Dr Gillian Rose.

The Strokes boxing clever In this Issue: e Ministry of Sound, Singapore e Virtually Frank Sinatra e Kanye West & Chris Rea e Icebar & Living Room W1 Issue 13 March 2006 The Martin Experience www.martin-audio.com right at the cutting EDGE THE EDGE An earlier than usual edition of The Edge this spring sees us publishing our biggest-ever issue in time for the NSCA Exhibition in Las Vegas. It’s a win-win situation as this then enables us to reach visitors at the hugely influential Pro Light+Sound Frankfurt at the end of the month, with arguably the most important edition of The Edge we have yet published. Rich in coverage from North America, we are also proud to bring you some groundbreaking stories from around the world. In the hierarchy of pro audio installs little causes as much excitement as projects undertaken by Steve Dash (Integral Sound) and Austen Derek (Aurateq) — particularly to any of us old enough and fortunate enough to have experienced the original Richard Long sound system at Paradise Garage nearly 30 years ago. Therefore your first port of call should be to page 6 where the new 3,360-capacity Ministry of Sound in Singapore is awash with Martin Audio components specified by these master technicians. On the domestic front we have been kept busy covering The Strokes (with Capital Sound), Chris Rea (with RG Jones) and the new ‘Virtual’ Frank Sinatra season (with Autograph Sound) who have used our equipment as their main PA arrays at the London Palladium. Working from reclaimed archives, the show has presented a major restoration and time-coding challenge as the Sinatra voice is ‘synced’ to a live 24-piece orchestra and 35mm footage appears on nine different moving projection displays.
