Resolved: [755] That the question of signing the minutes of the Quarterly Meeting of the Council held on 7th December, 1967, be deferred. REPORT OF THE SPECIAL INTERVIEWING COMMITTEE RE APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY BOROUGH ARCHITECT AND PLANNER Resolved: [756] That the report of the Special Interviewing Committee re Appointment of Deputy Borough Architect and Planner held on 25th January, 1968, be received. COUNCIL 2408 APPOINTMENT OF DEPUTY BOROUGH ARCHITECT AND PLANNER Upon motion by His Worship the Mayor, Resolved: [757] That the Council resolve to exclude the Press and the public, to go into Committee to interview not more than three candidates for the post of Deputy Borough Architect and Planner. Upon resumption in Open Council, and on motion by His Worship the Mayor, Resolved: [758] That the Council hereby appoint Mr. Stuart J. Murphy, Dip.Arch. A.R.I.B.A, Group Architect, City of Westminster to the post of Deputy Borough Architect and Planner, with effect from 1st March, 1968, at a salary of £3,188 10s. Od. p.a. within the scale laid down by the Joint Negotiating Committee for Chief Officers of Local Authorities, namely £3,188 10s. Od. rising by four annual increments of £98 to a maximum of £3,580 10s. Od p.a., the appointment to be subject to:— (a) the Conditions of Service laid down by the Joint Negotiating Com mittee for Chief Officers of Local Authorities; (b) the provisions of the Local Government Superannuation Acts, 1937 to 1953; (c) the grant of a lump sum car allowance of £165 p.a.; (d) termination by three months' notice on either side; (e) the passing of a medical examination by the Council's medical referee. (Notes: (/) Alderman Gange, J.P., voted against. The Mayor's Chaplain (the Reverend R. J. Vaughan, M.C., M.A.) opened the Meeting with Prayers. MINUTES. Resolved: [759] That the minutes of the Quarterly Meeting of the Council held on 7th De cember, 1967, having been circulated, be taken as read and signed as a correct record; and that the question of signing the minutes of the Special Meeting of the Council held on 25th January, 1968, be deferred. 2411 COUNCIL DEATH OF MR. JAMES PERCY BENNETTS. His Worship the Mayor reported with deep regret the death of Mr. James Percy Bennetts on Saturday, 20th January, 1968, at the age of 93. Mr. Bennetts was Surveyor to the former Harrow-on-the-Hill Urban District Council from 1900 until 1934, when for a short period before his retirement he became the first Surveyor to the Harrow Urban District Council. He soon returned to local Government and in 1937 was elected a Member of the former Middlesex County Council. In 1949, he was elected a County Alderman, which office he held with distinction until 1961, when he finally retired. CHRISTMAS APPEAL FOR OLD PEOPLE. The Mayor reported that the total sum donated to his Christmas appeal amounted to £159 7s. 6d., the major portion of which had been distributed to needy old people in the Borough, and, in addition, a sum of £140 from the Charity Fund had been donated to deserving causes in the Borough. HUMAN RIGHTS YEAR. The Mayor reminded Members of the Council of the Towns Meeting to be held at Harrow County Girls' School at 8.00 p.m. on 9th February, 1968. ILLNESS OF MEMBERS. The Mayor reported that Alderman Mrs. Potts had made some progress although she was still in hospital. Alderman Mrs. Nott Cock was also in hospital but was making good progress and her condition was now quite satis factory, Councillor Campbell had been discharged from hospital and was con valescing at home. THE EARL ATTLEE FOUNDATION APPEAL. The Mayor called the attention of Members to the fact that he had written to all local organisations in regard to the Earl Attlee Foundation Apeal, in dicating that donations must be made by not later 31st March, 1968. DEATH OF THE RIGHT HON. BISHOP JOOST DE BLANK. The Mayor reported that he proposed attending, with the Mayoress and the Town Clerk, the memorial service for the late Bishop Joost de Blank at Westminster Abbey on 26th January, 1968. OLD PEOPLE'S CLUB, MARSH ROAD, PINNER. The Mayor read a message which he had received from Members of the Old People's Club, Marsh Road, Pinner, expressing thanks for a visit which he COUNCIL 2412 and the Mayoress had made to the club's New Year Party, and also for the help and assistance given by members of the staff and by voluntary helpers.
