Cuppa and a Chat At Kurnai we are always looking at ways to improve what we do. It is for this reason that we are inviting a number of interested parents to meet with us in a very informal way so we can listen to what parents tell us about our Campus and

college. The get together over a coffee and some nibbles will be held in the University Campus staffroom. If you are interested in participating in a similar session please contact the school and we will include you in another session to be held later in the year or in the new year. A big thank you to all those parents who have accepted the invitation for the first Cuppa and Chat. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS Principal News Contd... Stress Less Day The next Stress Less Day will be held on the 14th September at 1.00pm. The success of these days have prompted us to continue with them throughout the year. During the lunchtime event students participate in a number of fun/funny events that give everyone watching a bit of a laugh such as a spaghetti eating competition. Lunch is provided free and is often something that the students have requested such as pizza, hot dogs etc. Usually there will be a presentation from the PBS committee to students who have been signalled out for a special mention. We look forward to a fun at the next Stress Less Day. Geoff & Nello Calendar of Excursions / Camps

t’s been a very busy Term 3 in VCAL! Our year 12 Personal Development class are currently reviewing their involvement in the planning and implementation of the Kurnai Big Day Out. The students I worked with Michelle from The Smith Family and members of the SRC to plan the college wide activity. The VCAL students worked in small groups to plan and organise the activities for the day. They submitted proposals and budgets for their proposed activities before approval was granted. Their proposals included wheelchair sports, petting zoo, zorb balls, bungee run, origami and board games which were all a great success on the day. On the day the students helped run the activities. The Catering class helped provide food for the participants on the day serving more than 150 bowls of chilli carne and 200 hotdogs on the day. Feedback has been received from student and staff and the class is using this as part of their review process.

Year 11 students have started working on their small group community projects in Personal Development raising money for the White Ribbon Foundation. This ties in with the community violence unit students have been studying in Literacy. Students have organised dress up days, car washes, sausage sizzles and other campus wide activities to raise money and awareness. The projects are designed to give students the opportunity to work in teams to meet set goals and to then review their performance as a team and individuals. Year 10 VCAL students have started their work placements this term in a number of different industries. Work placement gives students an opportunity to learn about, not just different careers but to give them experience in working in different team environments and to develop their work skills. Students also get to apply the skills they are learning in their classes at school in a real world setting. Just a reminder that the Kurnai Kafe is open before school for toasties and hot drinks. At recess our yummy baked goodies are available and lunch is served Monday and Tuesday. Students are reminded that they are not permitted to enter the kitchen to help themselves to the pantry or the kitchen supplies. Cookies are only for sale before school, recess and the first 10 minutes of Monday and Tuesday lunchtime.

College Magazine If you wish to order the 2017 College magazine for your student, payment must be made by the end of this term. Payment can be made using existing credit (excluding CSEF funds) on your family account, Bpay, EFTPOS, Cash or Cheque. The charge for the magazine is $15. Please contact the General Office if you wish to arrange payment. UNIVERSITY CAMPUS - PATHWAYS TO SUCCESS

Kurnai Young Parents Program (KYPPs) News...

The KYPP students have started a new unit of work – Triumph over Tragedy wherby the students have watched and completed learning activities based around the movie Soul Surfer. Soul Surfer is a movie based on a true story about Bethany Hamilton, a young and promising surfer who had her arm bitten off by a tiger shark whilst out surfing with her friend. The movie showcases Bethany’s strength, determination and will to return to surfing with only 1 arm. One of the major learning tasks undertaken was looking at the 7 habits of highly effective people (Stephen Covey) and relating these to the film. The students have been enthusiastic about learning about these 7 habits and have been discussing how they can incorporate these into their lives. The next unit of work “Motivate me” looks at goal setting and famous failures.
