It is most commonly a barge or chariot. Depictions of solar barges date to the Neolithic and are older than the sun chariot. Examples include the solar barge of Ra (Egyptian) and the chariots of Apollo (Greek) and Surya (Hindu). A world tree is an AXIS MUNDI. Typically its roots reach the UNDERWORLD (represented as either earth or water) and its branches (inhabited by birds) the OVERWORLD in order to connect them to each other and to the phenomenal world. -

In partial fulfillment of the requirements for the M.A. Degree Ms. Annika Enqvist has successfully completed her oral examination, and thesis project. _______________________________ Dr. Ronald Jones ________________________________ Dr. Sara Kristoffersson ________________________________ Dr. Helena Mattsson DATE _______________________________ Annika Enqvist WIRE, MA Program in Critical Writing and Curatorial Practice Konstfack University College of Arts, Crafts and Design, Stockholm Sweden. The New Beauty Council Investigates – When Form Becomes Behaviour The New Beauty Council (NBC) project, in its different forms and shapes, is about the multiple perceptions of urban space and design. NBC’s work includes performances, public projects, speaker series, urban curating and collaborations that engage innovative strategies of production as well as dialogues. NBC investigates how concepts of the public are constituted and how beauty and ugliness can be (re-)defined. Using the idea of the carnivalesque as a method, NBC engages with organizations and institutions, which shape and interpret cities through public conversations and staged situations. The founding members are Annika Enqvist, Anna Kharkina, Thérèse Kristiansson and Kristoffer Svenberg. A recent project is Changed Perspectives c/o Stockholm City Museum – comprising four public talks about living in and making use of Stockholm as a city. These conversations were curated and performed by Annika Enqvist and Thérèse Kristiansson.1 The research and subjects of the series in general, and one of the talks; Whatever Blows Our Trumpet in particular, are the basis of this paper. Lounging the NBC as a collaborative initiative, building the website, producing the public talks and curating other works have been a part of the practical part of my MA project. -

Women in Jamaican Dancehall
WOMEN IN JAMAICAN DANCEHALL: Rethinking Jamaican Dancehall through a Women-Centered Informal Economy Approach. by Leslie-Ann Fullerton A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Social Justice Education Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2017 © Copyright by Leslie-Ann Fullerton 2017 WOMEN IN JAMAICAN DANCEHALL: Rethinking Jamaican Dancehall through a Women-Centered Informal Economy Approach Leslie-Ann Fullerton Master of Arts, Social Justice Education Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2017 Abstract Some academic discussions that address women who participate in Jamaican Dancehall have taken the position that these women lack morality and agency and have internalized sexist norms (Lake 1996). This is because of the overtly sexual nature of the cultural expression. This research project aimed to expand the conversation concerning these women by investigating how female dancehall dancers, models and auxiliaries (designers, beauticians and vendors) make a living from Dancehall's informal economy. Through empirical evidence, this research will suggest that women who participate in Jamaican dancehall have subjectively and economically benefited from the informal economy that is embedded in dancehall. ii Acknowledgments This research could not have come to fruition without the help of many amazing souls. Firstly, let me acknowledge St. Catherine Cooperate Credit Union for giving me my first job as a Client Care Representative. I would also like to thank them for not renewing my contract after three years, which gave me the freedom to earn a living while doing what I loved. Freedom from working at the Credit Union gave me the opportunity to work as a dancehall model. -
Looking North of the Greek World: the Slavic Folk Poetry of the Balkans
Curriculum Units by Fellows of the Yale-New Haven Teachers Institute 1984 Volume II: Greek Civilization Looking North Of The Greek World: The Slavic Folk Poetry of The Balkans Curriculum Unit 84.02.01 by Henry J. Brajkovic A student might say, referring to the Iliad and the Odyssey; “That kind of stuff they did then, nobody does it anymore!” This paper is written to refute such a thought. Another student might wonder: “Where could we find plain folks making up poems?” Another might quip: “As to reciting them, forget it!” Yet, are there today any tribes or nations that have such a tradition? Where could we find an uninterrupted living tradition of uneducated people or persons with only an elementary education creating their own folk poetry? The answer is: in divided Macedonia. Most of Macedonia is located in the southernmost part of Yugoslavia. The remaining parts of Macedonia are in northern Greece, Bulgaria and Albania. The material in this paper could be used for the study of geography, ancient or medieval history, folk poetry, story-telling, or for a study about heroes. Therefore, it is usable in all grades and on all levels. Objectives Can one say that the spirit of creativity lives within each nation? Can one say that “ordinary” folks (distinguished from literary, educated writers and poets) make poetry that many accept? What is one to say about the lyrics of popular songs, for example, in the “standard” pop tunes, early rock, bluegrass and “urban” folk tunes, protest songs, etc. There seems to be a spirit at work among the people seeking an outlet through song. -
