PAGE 16 TWl FEBRUARY 2 - FEBRUARY 8 1996 clone of Terrance McNally's Lips Together, Teeth Apart, gently unveils the complexity of the lead couple's relationship as it tears down the facades that hold them together. Rachel Ollagnon's performance compli- ments the writer's style with her amiable but strong portrayal of Shelly. Her portrayal is in stark contrast to the rigid persona cre- ated by Mark Roberts when his masculin- ity is threatened throughout the script. The tender exchanges between Mark and Shelly are balanced by the hard edge given the play by Celeste Cheramie as Jill, who proves there's nothing worse than a spurned woman. The chemistry between her and Rob Skehan as the video store pickup is unexpectedly soothing, and al- lows the audience to see a kinder side to this troubled woman. Main Street's production is exceptionally stylized, with a smart, contemporary set consisting of an attractive, well-constructed wooden deck with matching outdoor furni- ture. The built-in benches allow the actors to play to the audience with ease in the round format. Director Robin Robinson's addition of light jazz music adds to the overall pleasantness of this modern yuppie haven. The Montrose community can expect to see more sound theatre from the Main Street company as artistic director and founder Rebecca Udden takes a bold step and expands to a second stage that will seat 250 patrons. The renovation of the old Spellbinders Comedy Club, at 4617 Mont- rose in the Chelsea development, will be completed in time for the Feb. 7 opening of Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. The i i!l!l space will be used primarily for the compa- m ny's lucrative Young People Theater, but ~ should grow to include other programming . for the community in future seasons. As Main Street has grown with full-scale productions of the musicals The Secret Garden, Sunday in the Park with George, and Into the Woods in recent seasons, it has been forced to rent Hamman Hall on the campus of Rice University. The new space will provide a home for future the- atrical milestones for this innovative company.

Jeffrey Sweet's dramatic comedy With and Without is being presented by Main Street Theater, 2540 Times Blvd. in Hous- ton. Shows are tonight through this Sunday, Feb. 4. For reservations and infor- mation, call (713)524-6706. 'WIt
