  • Will They Still Be Dancing?
WILL THEY STILL BE DANCING? INTEGRATION AND ETHNIC TRANSFORMATION AMONG YUGOSLAV IMMIGRANTS IN SCANDINAVIA By Carl-Ulrik Schierup and Aleksandra Alund Department of Sociology University of Umea Sweden 1986 "Collective dancing or singing, particularly spectacular cases of the synchro nization of the homogeneous and the orchestration of the heterogenous, are everywhere predisposed to symbolize group integration and, by symbolizing it, to strengthen it" Pierre Bourdieu' Front Cover: Wallachian chain-dance in a Danish provincial town © 1987 Carl-Ulrik Schierup and Alexandra Alund Printed in Sweden by Graphic Systems AB Giitehorg, 1987 ISBN 9122-00836-5 ACKNOWLEDGMENTS Indulged with sociological self-centeredness we have reduced vampires to mechanisms of social cohesion. Hence,we have questioned a culture, seeing vampires as what they are, the dead ones haunting the living. Ifour interpreta tions have shown contempt towards vampires, we apologize for our mundane limitations, and thank them for the inspiration. We also thank all those living beings who have helped us through our voyage through the past and present. We give special thoughts to Baba Mitra, Baba Inda, and other great Wallachian mothers, who have received us with hospitality and endured our incessant questioning. For their excellent cooperation: Miroslav Panojevic, Ljubce Muncanovic, Stale Zulumovski, Nada and Aleksandar Serafimovski and many others in Denmarkand Sweden. Special thanks also to Steven Sampson and Michel Vale for their great patience and meticulous scrutinizing of our English. Steven Sampson, Lasse Petterson, Billy Ehn, Ole H\'Siris, Georg Karlsson, Rune Aberg and Christian Horst have read and criticized the manuscript and helped us with valuable suggestions. Finally, for their generous financial support we thank the following organiza tions: The Swedish Council for Research in the Humanities and Social Sciences, The Bank of Sweden Tercentenary Foundation, The Danish Social Science Research Council and the Danish International Development Agency.

The New Beauty Council Investigates – When Form Becomes Behaviour The New Beauty Council (NBC) project, in its different forms and shapes, is about the multiple perceptions of urban space and design. NBC’s work includes performances, public projects, speaker series, urban curating and collaborations that engage innovative strategies of production as well as dialogues. NBC investigates how concepts of the public are constituted and how beauty and ugliness can be (re-)defined. Using the idea of the carnivalesque as a method, NBC engages with organizations and institutions, which shape and interpret cities through public conversations and staged situations. The founding members are Annika Enqvist, Anna Kharkina, Thérèse Kristiansson and Kristoffer Svenberg. A recent project is Changed Perspectives c/o Stockholm City Museum – comprising four public talks about living in and making use of Stockholm as a city. These conversations were curated and performed by Annika Enqvist and Thérèse Kristiansson.1 The research and subjects of the series in general, and one of the talks; Whatever Blows Our Trumpet in particular, are the basis of this paper. Lounging the NBC as a collaborative initiative, building the website, producing the public talks and curating other works have been a part of the practical part of my MA project.

WOMEN IN JAMAICAN DANCEHALL: Rethinking Jamaican Dancehall through a Women-Centered Informal Economy Approach. by Leslie-Ann Fullerton A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Master of Arts, Social Justice Education Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2017 © Copyright by Leslie-Ann Fullerton 2017 WOMEN IN JAMAICAN DANCEHALL: Rethinking Jamaican Dancehall through a Women-Centered Informal Economy Approach Leslie-Ann Fullerton Master of Arts, Social Justice Education Department of Social Justice Education University of Toronto 2017 Abstract Some academic discussions that address women who participate in Jamaican Dancehall have taken the position that these women lack morality and agency and have internalized sexist norms (Lake 1996). This is because of the overtly sexual nature of the cultural expression. This research project aimed to expand the conversation concerning these women by investigating how female dancehall dancers, models and auxiliaries (designers, beauticians and vendors) make a living from Dancehall's informal economy. Through empirical evidence, this research will suggest that women who participate in Jamaican dancehall have subjectively and economically benefited from the informal economy that is embedded in dancehall. ii Acknowledgments This research could not have come to fruition without the help of many amazing souls. Firstly, let me acknowledge St. Catherine Cooperate Credit Union for giving me my first job as a Client Care Representative. I would also like to thank them for not renewing my contract after three years, which gave me the freedom to earn a living while doing what I loved. Freedom from working at the Credit Union gave me the opportunity to work as a dancehall model.
