If the direc- tor - who spent ten years in the provinces during the Cultural Revolution and sold his blood to purchase his first camera - wants us to understand that the essential thing that keeps us human is caring for each other, then we are going to treat the message a bit more seriously than if it comes from the West.

Shanghai Triad is currently showing in Houston at the Landmark Greenway 3 and in Dallas at the Landmark Inwood. It starts Feb. 23 at the Hollywood in College Station and at the Crossroads in San Antonio, and on March 8 at the Vii/age in Austin. ~
