Sunday Morning Masses

A GREAT TRADITION: THE Based upon what we know from Scripture from Tobit 12:15; Revelation 1:4,20; 3:1; 8:2,6; and Isaiah 63:9, the Church has determined that there are . Some of their names are very well known, while others have been forgotten to history.

As of the Council of Rome in 745 AD under the reign of Pope Saint Zachary, the Catholic Church officially only acknowledges the names of three of the seven Archangels: St. , St. , and St. Raphael. Although the Church acknowledges that there are seven Archangels, these three are the only named in Scripture, therefore, are currently the only three officially recognized by name in Catholic doctrine. The names of the other four Archangels appear in Jewish and Christian sources outside of the canon of Sacred Scripture (an example is the chapter 20) and their names are: , , , and Remiel.

SAINT MICHAEL Michael appears in Sacred Scripture in 10:13, 10:21, and 12:1; Jude 1:9 and Revelation 12:7 and in many apocryphal Jewish and Christian sources. Michael’s name means, “Who is like God.” Various traditions say that he was the first of the angels who were created. Traditionally, Michael has been revered as the Guardian of the Church. He is also the angel who led the forces of Heaven in casting out / when he rebelled against God.

SAINT GABRIEL Gabriel’s name has many meanings: “Strength of God,” “Hero of God” and “God has shown Himself Mightily.” Gabriel appeared to the Prophet Daniel to explain a vision from God (Daniel 8); he appeared to the priest Zacharias to announce that he would have a son, John the Baptist, who would be the forerunner of the Messiah, Jesus (Luke 1); and he appeared to the Virgin Mary in the Annunciation (Luke 1).

SAINT RAPHAEL Raphael in Sacred Scripture played a pivotal role in the Book of Tobit as he helped Tobias the son of Tobit on his journey. Raphael’s name means, “Healing Power of God”. Traditionally, due to the meaning of his name, he is revered as the Archangel of Healing. St. Raphael is the patron saint of travelers, the blind, bodily ills, happy meetings, nurses, physicians and medical workers.

PRAYING TO ANGELS & SAINTS Prayer to the Angels and the Saints must never be confused with worshiping of them. For Catholics and Orthodox Christians, prayer to the Angels and the Saints is only in asking for their intercession to God (as we ask any other believer here to also pray for us), for their protection by means of the Grace of God working through them, and for guidance as we strive to imitate their examples of service to God and to others.

In Christ,

Deacon John

Diocese kicks off capital campaign adapted from article The Compass by Patricia Kasten, September 19, 2019

‘one by One’ initiative seeks to raise $70 million for six ministry areas

The Diocese of Green Bay has embarked on a campaign to raise $70 million. Called “one by One,” the campaign involves each of the diocese’s 157 parishes in fundraising efforts to cover six areas of ministry needs. These range from parish needs to Catholic schools to vocations.

“Jesus calls us, one by one, to follow him,” explained Bishop David Ricken. “This ongoing call invites us to con- sider how we can better build the Kingdom of God in our families, our church and our world.” The campaign seeks to fund six key areas: Parishes Catholic schools and faith formation programs Social services outreach Vocations Evangelizing families and individuals to discover, follow, worship and share Jesus Modernized communication strategies.

While the capital campaign is new, it is based on the theme of discipleship which Bishop Ricken has emphasized since his episcopal installation here in 2008. In his first pastoral letter (November 2009), “A New Moment for Catechesis,” he wrote: “What I am really calling for here is that all of us see our relationship to Jesus Christ as the most central one of our lives.”

Since then, through diocesan initiatives, school and parish planning, personnel enrichment, exploratory sessions, countless homilies and teachings, Bishop Ricken has continued to stress this call to a relationship with Jesus that leads people to become not just believers, but missionary disciples.

In his 2014 pastoral letter – “Disciples on the Way” — the bishop invited everyone on “a journey of deepening our prayer life, of learning to be better disciples ourselves and of making disciples of others for the sake of the Kingdom of God.”

All this has led to this capital campaign for current needs in the areas of faith formation, vocations, evangelization, charities and service and — receiving the most focus — parish life.

Of the goal of $70 million to be raised over the next two years, $30 million will stay in parishes.

For every dollar the diocese’s 157 parishes raise, the plan calls for 50 cents to be returned to parishes. This equals $30 million raised by a successful campaign, plus 50% of everything each parish collects above their personal parish goal.

In the Oshkosh area, the campaign will be conducted differently than in other parishes. Bishop Ricken will not be accepting any donations from the Oshkosh parishes for the diocesan portion of the campaign. Instead, all the money raised here will remain in the Oshkosh area. This is because the main focus of the one by one campaign in Oshkosh will be to support the renovation and remodeling of our Catholic School, Lourdes Academy, bringing students of all grade levels onto one campus at the corner of Witzel and Sawyer. Each of the three parishes will also have a component of the campaign for their own needs.

For more information on the diocesan campaign, visit the campaign’s website, one.catholicfoundationgb.org For information about the project for Lourdes Academy, visit lourdes.today.

SEPTEMBER 29, 2019 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 5 Reflecting on the Scriptures (Luke 16:19-31)

In The Bridges at Toko-Ri , a novel based on the Korean War, the reader follows Lieutenant Harry Brubaker closely as he must leave his family in Denver to go to Korea to serve in the Korean War. The war has a “distant” quality in the killing and the reconnaissance until Lieutenant Harry is shot down and finds himself behind enemy lines. Upon exploring his new surroundings, Harry spots a Korean family bathing and laughing near a stream. In this family he is able to see his own that he left behind in Denver. For the first time Harry understands that the distant enemy is comprised of a father, a mother, children: a family---many families. Suddenly the war is not a vague, distant abstraction. This war has eyes and faces —and families. No longer is the war impersonal. He sees himself---and all of humanity in this moment.

It is easy for us to hold groups of people at a distance---a safe distance----from affecting our lives, our way of thinking, and especially, our hearts. In today’s Gospel, Jesus is speaking to the Pharisees who fail to hear Abraham, Moses, and Jesus himself, in having compassion and caring for the poor. It is the parable of the unseen by those in high places: the Pharisees for whom the parable is told and the rich. If we, like the Pharisees, keep distance from our “Lazaruses” those whom we are given to love and care for during our time on this earth, we will not truly “see” them ---and we are in danger of lacking our full humanity---first in compassion and secondly in caring action.. For in each person we must see the fingerprint of God. We must see our own poverty and our own humanity.

The rich man kept Lazarus at a distance, perhaps never looking into his eyes. He refused not only to reach out to touch a very needy person, but he also resisted being touched by the poor man. From this safe distance, my heart cannot be troubled or tugged. People who serve the poor personally are richer beyond measure. Lazarus had something of real worth to offer the rich man and when death came, the transmission of Lazarus’ gifts became impossible. The less our hands are wrapped around things for our identity and meaning, the more they will be open and available for receiving the body of Christ in one another.

Open my eyes, Lord, and help me to see your face. Help me to love like you.

Betty Schwandt - Pastoral Associate
