MISSION OF ST. RAPHAEL As friends and followers of Jesus, we are Thank you, Fr. Tom and Fr. Kevin, for devoted to fostering households and helping us to grow closer to Jesus, communities of discipleship through the walking with us on our journey, and for mission and ministry of the Catholic Church. bringing the Sacraments to us! Today is priesthood Sunday. We recognize the care, love, and shepherding of our pastor, Fr. Tom and our parochial vicar, Fr. Kevin. We thank God for their “yes” to God’s call to serve God and His people. Let us pray for them daily. Thank you, Fr. Tom and Fr. Kevin, for helping us to grow closer to Jesus, walking with us on our journey, and for bringing the Sacraments to us!

Last week’s bulletin contained Faithful Citizenship 2020 from our United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, which is an aid to guide us in voting according to what Jesus teaches. As we prepare to vote in 5 weeks, let us be kind to one another, especially to those who have differing ideas than our own. People often have very strong beliefs and feelings in regard to politics. We must be respectful and kind to one another in dialogue and in listening. The second greatest commandment Jesus gave us is “Love your neighbor as yourself.” A person who holds an opinion other than your own is not your enemy but your brother/sister. As St. Paul says, “Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, heartfelt compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience, bearing with one another and forgiving one another And over all these put on love, that is, the bond of perfection. And let the peace of Christ control your hearts, the peace into which you were also called in one body.”

This weekend at St. Raphael we’re celebrating our feast day, the Feast of the . Besides Raphael, and are the only Archangels mentioned by name in The Bible. Raphael’s name means “God heals.” This is so very needed at this time of illness, depression, and division. Let us ask St. Raphael’s intercession for all of the healing that is needed---physically, mentally, emotionally, spiritually, racially, and politically.

Also this upcoming week is the Pet Blessing on Thursday. The Feast Day of St. Francis of Assisi, who loved animals and the environment, is on October 4. Saint Francis of Assisi abandoned a life of luxury for a life devoted to Christianity after hearing the voice of God, telling him to rebuild the Christian church and live in poverty. Francis' embrace of Christ-like poverty was a radical notion at the time. The Christian church was tremendously rich, much like the people heading it, which concerned Francis and many others. Francis set out on a mission to restore Jesus’ teaching & values to the church. With his charisma, he drew thousands of followers to him and his mission. In honor of St. Francis’ love for animals we will have a blessing of pets in our St. Raphael courtyard on Thursday, October 1 at 5:30 pm.

Grateful for our St. Raphael family,

Betty

Prayer to St. Raphael

Glorious Archangel Raphael, who enters and serves before the Glory of the Lord: present to God the prayer of our need.

As once you helped young Tobias on his travels, help us on our journey through life.

Grant us healing of body, mind and spirit that we may be faithful disciples of Jesus who pray, serve and generously share in response to the needs of the human family.

SEPTEMBER 27, 2020 TWENTY-SIXTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME | 5 Reflecting on the Scriptures (Ez. 18:25-28, Ps. 25:4-14, Phil. 2:1-11, Matt. 21:28-32)

Complete my joy by being of the same mind, with the same love, united in heart, thinking one thing. Do nothing out of selfishness or out of vainglory; rather, humbly regard others as more important than yourselves, each looking out not for his own interests, but also for those of others. Have in you the same attitude that is also in Christ Jesus. ---Phil. 2:1-5

In July, a fellow, whom I hired to work on a project on my house, commented to me about the great work ethic of people in Wisconsin as well as their friendly nature. He then remarked about the difference between folks in New Hampshire and people here, “People here will say they are going to invite you or that they’re going to an event, but they don’t follow through. Whereas, in New Hampshire we just tell people ‘no’, if we don’t want to go, and we don’t talk about inviting people unless we are going to do so.” I’ve been reflecting on this perception since then, and if it bears any truth in my life. Am I saying “yes” to people and not following through? Even more importantly, have I responded “yes” to the Lord and not acted on my “yes”?

Today’s Gospel raised this question: Am I saying “yes” to God because that’s what is expected from people who say they love God? Am I trying to maintain my self-righteousness? (much like many Pharisees in the Scriptures) Does my life bear fruit? How am I living my “yes”?

Jesus tells the parable of the two sons to a group of self-righteous people. Saying the “right” things, they have pacified themselves into spiritual complacency. Operating in a facade, they don’t even recognize that their actions contradict their words. Ironically, it is those who have not conformed themselves to saying the “right” thing, giving desirable responses who, are in the end, responding to God’s call by doing the Will of the Father. It is those who actually “do” the will of God who have truly responded to the Lord. “For if anyone is a hearer of the word and not a doer, he is like a man who looks at his own face in a mirror. He sees himself, then goes off and promptly forgets what he looked like.” (James 1:23-25)

The parable also provides a message of hope. Whatever my initial response to God has been, there is still the opportunity to reject sin, and turn my heart toward him. God’s mercy is always available to me, no matter how I have responded in the past, for the repenting thief on the cross receives God’s mercy.

Paul urges me to “have the same attitude that was also in Christ Jesus,” which is to be humble. Living in self- giving love is to put on the mind of Christ. Whereas, self-absorption replaces genuine love. Paul’s advice is to take the focus off myself and direct it lovingly to others. Humble people are Christ-like, making a difference in our world. Humility recognizes God is God---and I am not. Because God is the giver of all good gifts I have received, I live Christ in selfless action humbly using my gifts for others--like Christ Himself has done.

Greetings from Jackson, KY!

We hope this update reaches you healthy and well during this pandemic. Though it is a strange and difficult time, we continue to be filled with joy at the work God continues to do through the ministry at Holy Cross, your sister parish. We have been back to having public Masses for the last few months and we continue to keep you in our prayers. Though a very different summer without our regular Mission Encounter groups, we have experienced the Spirit moving in other ways. Our Teen Disciples group, which brings together middle school and high school youth from three Catholic parishes in our area, continued to meet virtually throughout the summer. We even gained some new members! Soon we will start up a virtual religious education program for elementary aged kids and are proud to have one child preparing for Baptism and First Communion and two older kids preparing for First Communion! The week of our Feast Day (Sept. 14: Exaltation of the Holy Cross) will be very special this year with our first-ever #HolyCrossWeek! If you don't already, we invite you to follow us on Facebook for special programing during Holy Cross week and the entire Season of Creation! All the while, we continue to reach out to the community through vital service programs, like cooking for the homeless shelter and helping people in emergency situations with their utilities. We'll have a newsletter coming out this fall, and would love to share more with you about our ministries! We invite you to sign up for our quarterly newsletters at www.holycrossjackson.org. Please keep our community in your prayers--especially during this month of our Feast Day--and know that you remain in ours! May God bless you!
