Right in front of us you can see the Monument to San Martín and this beautiful park is Plaza San Martín. Look at your maps and follow the directions I'll give you. Go around the park. Walk along Santa Fe Avenue up to Florida Street. If you want to go shopping, turn right into Florida street. You'll find lots of shops there. If you prefer seeing places of interest, turn left into Florida Street and then turn right into Pasaje Corina Kavanagh. You'll see Basílica del Santísimo Sacramento right ahead. It's a luxuriously decorated church built in 1916. It's very impressive. Go along San Martín street and before Dr Ricardo Rojas street you'll reach the Kavanagh Building. Then go straight ahead and you'll be back in the park. Walk past the Bank of the Argentine Nation and on your left you'll see the Monumento a los Caídos en Malvinas. Go across Avenida del Libertador and you'll get to Fuerza Aérea Park. The international Sheraton Hotel is opposite the park. In the middle of the park you'll see the Monumental Tower, a clock tower built by the British community in Buenos Aires. From there you'll also see Retiro train station. Feel free to walk around the neighbourhood. You'll find beautiful buildings, art galleries and bars. Do you remember their meaning of these highlighted sentences from the tour guide's speech? In these sentences the tour guide is telling the tourists what to do. He's using the imperative . What about the underlined verbs? Are they referring to the past, present or future? Palermo is the quietest and has low-rise buildings and lots of trendy cafes/restaurants, but it can feel a bit touristy, it’s further out from the city centre and the transport links aren’t as good, depending on which part you’re staying in. San Telmo is a more traditional neighbourhood and lots of people love it, but some parts are more rundown. Barrio Norte is probably a good compromise – nice, safe neighbourhood with lots of facilities and good transport links to the centre. Best to choose somewhere near a subte station or near major bus routes (eg along Avenida Santa Fe, Las Heras, etc.). Travelling around the city You will need to buy a Sube card for a small deposit on arrival, which will work for buses and the metro. This can then be recharged at metro stations and many kiosks. For travelling throughout the city, the websites http://beta.comoviajo.com/ and http://mapa.buenosaires.gob.ar/ are very useful. You can enter your starting point and destination and they will calculate the fastest public transport connections between them.

In the past, notable people like genial writer Jorge Luis Borges, human rights activist (and Nobel Peace Prize winner) Adolfo Pérez Esquivel, and fiercely gifted pianist Martha Argerich have called my city home. The best book about my city is Fervor de Buenos Aires by Jorges Luis Borges because he wrote it when he was in his early twenties and Buenos Aires is a city of the young. And also because Fervor de Buenos Aires is a collection of brief poetic texts that take us to places where we can truly go, physically and right now, in this city. Making poetry, like Buenos Aires, a matter of choosing to go out and meet it. My city’s best museum is MALBA (Museo de Arte Latinamericano de Buenos Aires) because of its dynamic approach to making contemporary art available to the public eye, its open doors to public events in all fields from cinema to literature to cuisine and for all audiences including a set of programs specially curated for cross-cultural youth.
