Where information has been derived from other sources, I confirm that this has been indicated in the thesis. 2 Abstract This thesis reconstructs and analyses the life and agency of Elisabeth Parr, marchioness of Northampton (1526-1565), with the aim of increasing understanding of women’s networks of influence and political engagement at the mid-Tudor courts, c. 1547- 1565. Analysis of Elisabeth’s life highlights that in the absence of a Queen consort the noblewomen of the Edwardian court maintained and utilized access to those in power and those with political significance and authority. During the reign of Mary Tudor, Elisabeth worked with her natal family to undermine Mary’s Queenship and support Elizabeth Tudor, particularly by providing her with foreign intelligence. At the Elizabethan court Elisabeth regained her title (lost under Mary I) and occupied a position as one of the Queen’s most trusted confidantes and influential associates. Her agency merited attention from ambassadors and noblemen as well as from the Emperor Maximilian and King Erik of Sweden, due to the significant role she played in several major contemporary events, such as Elizabeth’s early marriage negotiations. This research is interdisciplinary, incorporating early modern social, political and cultural historiographies, gender studies, social anthropology, sociology and the study of early modern literature. -

Abstract—This state-of-knowledge review of information on relationships between wildland fire and nonnative invasive plants can assist fire managers and other land managers concerned with prevention, detection, and eradi- cation or control of nonnative invasive plants. The 16 chapters in this volume synthesize ecological and botanical principles regarding relationships between wildland fire and nonnative invasive plants, identify the nonnative invasive species currently of greatest concern in major bioregions of the United States, and describe emerging fire-invasive issues in each bioregion and throughout the nation. This volume can help increase understanding of plant invasions and fire and can be used in fire management and ecosystem-based management planning. The volume’s first part summarizes fundamental concepts regarding fire effects on invasions by nonnative plants, effects of plant invasions on fuels and fire regimes, and use of fire to control plant invasions. The second part identifies the nonnative invasive species of greatest concern and synthesizes information on the three topics covered in part one for nonnative inva- sives in seven major bioregions of the United States: Northeast, Southeast, Central, Interior West, Southwest Coastal, Northwest Coastal (including Alaska), and Hawaiian Islands. -

CATHEDRAL OF THE IMMACULATE CONCEPTION Job description for: Sacristan Position Summary: In general, this role serves as an arranger for worship services, ensuring that vestments and linens are arranged and ready, that altar vessels are kept safe, that consumables like altar wines and altar bread are in adequate supply, and that the church as a whole is kept secure and in veneration shape. The sacristan needs to work and communicate well with the liturgy coordinator, the rector, the deacons and pastors to attend to the environment of worship. A sacristan should have a solid understanding of how liturgies flow, the order of Mass and services, and the basic teachings of and respect for the Roman Catholic faith. A sacristan’s schedule is heavily dependent on the church’s worship schedule. Hours can include weekends, evenings and holidays and will vary during the seasons of Christmas, Holy Week and Easter. Working hours include opening church an hour before confessions or celebration of any Mass and close church after liturgy. A bi-weekly time sheet will be kept by employee and signed by the liturgy coordinator. Primary Duties and Responsibilities of Sacristan (include but are not limited to): Opening the Cathedral. Preparing the altar and worship space for all liturgies -weekday and weekly liturgies, funerals and special feast days, wedding, funerals, holy days and holiday services; laying out linens, host and sacramental wine, vestments, special seating, offertory tables and linens, and worship aides; cleaning up used Sacristies vessels and locking up church. Drawing upon extensive manuscript research, it focuses on the reign of Mary I (1553-1558), when the official return to Roman Catholicism was accompanied by the prosecution of Protestants for heresy, and the reign of Elizabeth I (1558-1603), when the state religion again shifted to Protestantism. I argue that the cognitive dissonance created by these seesaw changes of official doctrine necessitated a society in which religious mutability became standard operating procedure. For most early modern men and women it was impossible to navigate between the competing and contradictory dictates of Tudor religion and politics without conforming, dissimulating, or changing important points of conscience and belief. -

22 Under the Eye of Gorgo: Apotropaic Acts in Macbeth and King Lear François-Xavier Gleyzon University of Liverpool f the theme of Medusa has not ceased—from Antiquity throughout the Renaissance to the present day—to inspire I and to act as a catalyst for a whole mass of studies in the domain of arts, literature and social sciences, it is astonishing to note that Medusa has been largely neglected in the realm of Shakespearean Studies. Indeed, in my investigating work for this paper, I found that there is only, to my knowledge, one study in which the theme of Medusa is directly treated and analysed in the context of a Shakespeare tragedy: “Macbeth, the Male Medusa,” by Marjorie Garber.1 Macbeth lends itself both relevantly and opportunely to a study relating to the myth of the Medusa when one recalls the words of Macduff, who on discovering the corpse of his king, Duncan, exclaims horrified, O horror, horror, horror! Tongue nor heart Cannot conceive nor name thee! Approach the chamber, and destroy your sight With a new Gorgon: do not bid me speak; See, and then speak yourselves. (2.3.71-73 [my emphasis]) If Garber offers a brilliant reading of the Medusa complex in Macbeth2—to which I shall return later to look at more closely so as to propose alternative and complementary points of analysis— this reading constitutes, as I have pointed out, a rarity, even an exception in Shakespeare annals. For, generally speaking, and (almost) with one voice, Shakespeare critics have tended to describe and research artistic and literary techniques in what I could call the forces of movement and/or the animated—i.e., allowing statues of stone to take on life/flesh—rather than the opposite—i.e. -

Cor Hendriks The Host in the Toad The Development of a Fairytale Motif (V34.2) In Thompson’s Motif-Index of Folk-Literature we find under V34. Miraculous working of the host as subdivision V34.2. Princess sick because toad has swallowed her consecrated wafer. Thompson refers for this to Tale Type 613 and the study of this type by Christiansen. Other motifs he refers to are B177. Magic Toad; C55. Tabu: losing consecrated wafer; C940.1. Princess’s secret sickness from breaking tabu; D2064.1. Magic sickness because girl has thrown away her consecrated wafer. At this last motif Thompson remarks: H1292.4.1. Question (propounded on quest): How can the princess be cured? Answer: She must recover consecrated wafer which rat has stolen from her first communion. 1 This question of how the princess can be cured is treated by Christiansen in his study of AT 613 and he remarks that the list of the different remedies is long, and that it is difficult to settle a tradition. A certain feature though he finds in some of the variants, more fully worked out or simply suggested: it is the incident that the princess’s disease was due to a mishap at her first communion, where she lost the consecrated wafer. A toad took it, and is sitting under the floor with it in its mouth, and it has to be given back to the princess (also a rat is found). This episode can be seen in 4 Norse, 1 Swedish, 4 Danish, 2 Icelandic, 2 German, 1 Dutch, 2 Belgian, 2 Czech, 1 Hungarian, 1 Bask, 1 Rumanian, 1 Slovak, 4 Finnish, 2 Russian, 2 White- Russian; and 6 Polish versions.
