    “A few thoughts: “ Consubstantiation vs Transubstantiation...” 28/10/18 I speak in the name of Jesus the Christ, in the power of the Holy Spirit, to the glory of God the Father. Amen. A few years I ago I was asked to take a service in a well known protestant church in the City Bowl. The service went off without hitch. I was the Assistant Priest to St Michaels and All Angels in Observatory at the time. This had also been the parish largely responsible for my formation as an ordinand, Deacon and Priest. After the service had finished and I had completed my greetings at the front door to the church, I gathered my belongings and made my way to the church hall to join the parishioners for tea. As I walked past the kitchen I was quite shocked to notice the sacristans pouring the consecrated grape juice from the Mass back into the bottles. Furthermore, the consecrated bread squares were simply tumbled back into a non-descript container in the kitchen. I stopped for a second and paused, not sure what to do. Should I say something? I decided to look the other way. This was not my church. I was a guest here. What the experience did do for me in that split second is challenge me as to what my beliefs were when it came to the Blessed Sacrament. I was immediately reminded of the training I had received at university on the idea of consubstantiation vs transubstantiation. However, before we unpack these academic terms within the context of communion, I feel it may be prudent for us to reflect for a moment on our general understanding of the Eucharist, what it means to us and how the theology works around this crucial sacrament.

We are ashamed to read that before the aroma of this gift of the Lord’s own body and blood had faded from the room, the recipients of this meal should be battling over which of them at the table was the greatest. And yet, we must admit (also with shame), that no small number of disputes has arisen concerning this meal and among His disciples in the days since. There is, in fact, and somewhat ironically, a dispute or at least a very serious conversation going on among the Lord’s disciples today as to who should be least at the table, least in the sense not of value or worth but of size and age. Questions of curiosity, interest, concern, and even conscience have been raised not only throughout the church catholic, but among us, as well, in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod with respect to the sharing in the Lord’s Supper of young children and infants.2 We in The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod cherish this “holy and precious meal” and hunger for the sustenance and strength it provides us throughout our earthly pilgrimage.3 Since even earthly parents know how to give good gifts to their children, none of us would wish to withhold from our children good gifts from the Lord.

Princess sick because toad has swallowed her consecrated wafer. Thompson refers for this to Tale Type 613 and the study of this type by Christiansen. Other motifs he refers to are B177. Magic Toad; C55. Tabu: losing consecrated wafer; C940.1. Princess’s secret sickness from breaking tabu; D2064.1. Magic sickness because girl has thrown away her consecrated wafer. At this last motif Thompson remarks: H1292.4.1. Question (propounded on quest): How can the princess be cured? Answer: She must recover consecrated wafer which rat has stolen from her first communion. 1 This question of how the princess can be cured is treated by Christiansen in his study of AT 613 and he remarks that the list of the different remedies is long, and that it is difficult to settle a tradition. A certain feature though he finds in some of the variants, more fully worked out or simply suggested: it is the incident that the princess’s disease was due to a mishap at her first communion, where she lost the consecrated wafer. A toad took it, and is sitting under the floor with it in its mouth, and it has to be given back to the princess (also a rat is found).
