CONGRATULATIONS! Our Lady of Peace Mathlete Congratulations to Our Lady of Peace grade 7 student and mathlete, Roy Bou Abboud who was the gold medal winner at the Toronto Math Olympics held on April 7, 2018. He will be competing in the Ontario Math Olympics at the beginning of June this year. Good luck!

TCDSB Represented by Dante Alighieri and Loretto College at Provincial Drama Festival Two TCDSB schools were chosen to move on to the Provincial Showcase of the National Theatre Drama Festival (formerly known as the Sears Ontario Drama Festival). Congratulations to Dante Alighieri Academy for their original production of "The Wallpaper" and to Loretto College for their winning original production of "Play Rights: The Extinction of Childhood." There were 49 plays that were performed in the four Toronto districts in late February and 11 productions were chosen to move on to the Toronto Regional level (performed at Hart House Theatre, U of T). Out of these 11 plays, 2 were chosen to represent the Toronto region in the Provincial festival, being held in Cambridge, ON, May 9-12. Click here for more photos from the festival.

St. Margaret Receives $10,000 from MusiCounts and Acapella Foundation St. Margaret Catholic School is extremely grateful for the $10,000 donation from MusiCounts and the Acapella Foundation towards new musical instruments!

Harlem Globetrotters Visit St. Mary Catholic School On April 5, two players from the Harlem Globetrotters visited St. Mary Catholic School to play some basketball with students and teach them some of their tricks. Globetrotters team members, Zeus and El Gato ran drills with students, worked on ball handling skills and played a full-court game. Click here for more photos from the visit.

Luigi Marchione and Ashley Tedesco Receive Balciunas Memorial Award Ashley Tedesco, graduate of Venerable John Merlini Catholic School and Father Henry Carr CHS (2013); and Luigi Marchione, graduate of St. Jerome Catholic School and Chaminade College School (2011) are this year's recipients of the Peter Balciunas Memorial Award. This award was made possible through the generosity of the Balciunas family, who created the scholarship in memory of Peter Balciunas, a former principal of the TCDSB. The award is granted each year to a student of the Faculty of Education at York University - TCDSB Catholic Education Centre campus to encourage and support him or her in the pursuit of studies in preparation for teaching in a Catholic school. This year, the Balciunas family chose to split the award between two students.

Canadian Martyrs Wins 1st Place at Regional Chess Tournament On March 22, the Canadian Martyrs Girls Chess Team placed 1st in the Regional Chess Tournament. On March 23, the Open Chess Team also placed 1st in the Regional Chess Tournament. The school community is so proud of their students and the school is looking forward to competing in the City Championship Tournament in May!

St. Sebastian Sings Anthem at Harlem Globetrotters Performance Students, staff and parents from St. Sebastian attended the Harlem Globetrotters performance at the Ricoh Coliseum on Friday April 13. Jean Vanier Principal Wins Principal of the Year On Friday April 23, CPCO (Catholic Principals Council of Ontario) held their annual Gala Dinner and Awards Ceremony at the Delta Toronto Hotel. Linda Maselli-Jackman, Principal of Jean Vanier Catholic Secondary School, was the recipient of the award for Principal of the Year, 2018 for Toronto Catholic (Secondary). Director of Education Rory McGuckin was also in attendance and in support of Linda receiving the award. Congratulations to Crime Stoppers Winners of the Year The TCDSB congratulates Loretto Abbey student Amiya Reis for winning a Crime Stopper Student of the Year Award. The award ceremony is being held on May 9, 2018. Amiya is an excellent role model and displays good leadership qualities. The grade 12 student is involved in the Safe School’s Ambassadors Program, and previously a member of student council. She has helped many students with problem solving skills and makes students feel welcome. She is very respectful, thoughtful, sensitive, considerate and an extremely hardworking student. The Crime Stoppers School of the Year award is being presented to St. Marcellus Catholic School. The school is being recognized for the many initiatives in place that nurture a safe and welcoming learning environment with the current focus on internet safety and cyberbullying. THE ARTS St. Paul Catholic School Shakespearience Workshop The grade 6/7 students at St. Paul Catholic School participated in Shakespearience, a performing arts program aimed to help students gain a better understanding of Shakespeare's written works. The class was mentored by a certified teaching professional and a professional actor, who together, guided the students through the analysis of short texts and various acting exercises and activities. At the end of the workshop, students performed a short scene from Romeo and Juliet which enabled them to utilize the skills they learned throughout the workshop. Through this 75-minute interactive program, the students developed skills in the art of performance and the language of Shakespeare. They were highly engaged and have become more equipped to explore the world of Shakespeare’s timeless stories. Click here for more photos from the workshop. Notre Dame Performs Minotatemiskatowin: A Journey to Reconciliation On April 12, Notre Dame Catholic High School was honoured to lead a morning of reconcili-action. In response to those calls embedded in the Commission's report for Truth and Reconciliation, students and staff participated in curricular responses that have Indigenized teaching in an effort to both educate and begin the energetic move towards reconciliation within the school community. Under the direction of Ms. M Jack, students performed Minotatemiskatowin: A Journey to Reconciliation. After the performance, guests were welcomed to the school library for the opening of a space dedicated to the Residential School children who survived, and those who did not come home. St. Kateri Ballroom Dance Showcase The Ballroom Dance Showcase took place on April 5, 2018. The dance instructor, Mrs. Kari Drue took students through 10 intense weeks of disciplined dance sessions. Students demonstrated their skill and talent on the dance floor dancing the Meringue, Salsa, Waltz, Swing, Tango and many more. Bravo! Click here for more photos from the showcase.

FHC Performs in First Canadian Drumline Association Regional Competition On April 13, FHC Percussion travelled to St. Martin CSS in Mississauga for the first Canadian Drumline Association Regional Competition to debut their 2018 production, "Tension" based on the music of Nine Inch Nails. The students performed beautifully and placed 2nd in the Concert (Stand Still) Drumline category. The next competition that FHC will be competing in is on April 19 at St. Roch CSS in Brampton. CELEBRATING EASTER St. Joseph Morrow Park Healing Through Art Club The St. Joseph Morrow Park ‘Healing Through Art Club’ made Easter cards and chocolate eggs and delivered them to Bayview Extendicare. The students shared an early Easter celebration with the residents and fun was had by all.

Josyf Cardinal Slipyj Pysanka Workshop Josyf Cardinal Slipyj students from JK to grade 8 took part in a Pysanka Workshop, with the generous sponsorship of the Shevchenko Foundation. Pysankas are hand-decorated Ukrainian Easter eggs with intricate designs. Designs are not painted on, they are written with a kistka and beeswax. The CSPC parents and parent volunteers helped make the long workshop a great success. The FDK classes took part in the making of “krapankas” and the older students used kistkas, bees wax, and colourful dyes to decorate their eggs.

Monsignor Percy Johnson Drama Students Perform Stations of the Cross Students of Mr. Valvo's grade 10 drama class at Monsignor Percy Johnson performed the Stations of the Cross on Good Friday at St. Benedict's Church. In front of a packed congregation, these young, talented actors and actresses presented an emotional and heartfelt rendition of our Lord's crucifixion. Holy Week at St. Kateri SKT celebrated Holy Week in a special way this year. The ELP classes celebrated and read about the Last Supper when Jesus sat with his friends blessing the bread and wine. On Holy Thursday the grade 8 and grade 2/3 classes re-enacted the Stations of the Cross for the school bringing to life the events surrounding Jesus' death and Resurrection. ATHLETICS Launch of Annual Mayor’s School Cricket Tournament TCDSB Chair Barbara Poplawski and Director of Education Rory McGuckin were on hand to launch the 2018 tournament and congratulate the award-winning student athletes. Mayor John Tory and Helen Berhane, Chair of the Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) Canada were on hand to congratulate the students for their awards recognizing excellence in cricket, as well as the community coaches who received Mayor's recognition awards. The tournament will be held this year at Sunnybrook Park and G. Ross Lord Park from May 15-31.Click here for more photos from the event.

Dante Alighieri Wins TDCAA Boys Indoor Soccer Championship The Senior Boys Soccer team at Dante Alighieri Academy won the final round of the TDCAA Boys Indoor Soccer League at the Downsview Park Hangar on April 4. Congratulations players and coaches!

2018 TCDSB Girls Invitational Hockey Tournament Approximately 120 female hockey players from across the TCDSB gathered at the Malvern Community Centre for a day of friendly competition in the annual TCDSB Girls Hockey Invitational. Started several years ago at St. Denis, the tournament grows each year. This year, hosted by Blessed Sacrament Catholic School, the tournament was featured on Breakfast Television. Players wore an H on their jerseys in honour of the young men from the Humboldt Broncos who lost their lives over the weekend and for their families and friends. Starting with prayer and a ceremonial puck drop by Adam Wylde from BT, the tournament was off to a moving and exciting start. St. John XXII Wins Volleyball Championships Congratulations to the St. John XXIII Junior Girls and Boys Volleyball teams for their outstanding performance during the South Region tournament! Both teams brought home first place and the boys were undefeated.

St. Edward Wins City Hockey Championship Congratulations to St. Edward Catholic School for winning the Elementary Boys Hockey Championship on April 10, 2018! Students and coaches represented the St. Edward community proudly and came out with a huge victory. Way to go boys!

Canadian Martyrs ‘B’ Pool City Champions The Canadian Martyrs Boys Hockey team won the City Championship for Pool B this season on April 11, 2018. Congratulations to players and coaches on an excellent season!

TCDSB Demonstrates Support for Humboldt Broncos Community The heartbreaking media reports of a charter bus carrying the Humboldt Broncos junior hockey team colliding with a semi- trailer in Saskatoon on Friday sent a wave of shock and grief through Saskatchewan, the hockey world and the country. The people killed in the crash included many young players, their coach, a play-by-play radio announcer, an 18-year-old stats- keeper, the team’s athletic therapist and a bus driver. TCDSB schools and offices were asked to lower their flags to half-mast on April 10 and participate in the Nationwide tribute to the Humboldt Broncos Hockey Team through a Jersey Day and/or a #PutYourSticksOut memorial display on April 12. We are proud of our Catholic community for the strong demonstration of support for the victims, their families and all those who have been impacted by this tragedy. Thanks to generous donations the Fr. John Redmond CSS school community was able to raise $1,700, a true testament to Catholic values and generosity towards one another, especially in times of need. EVENTS & CELEBRATIONS Pink Day 2018 On Wednesday April 11, 2018, the Toronto Police Service, joined staff, students and special guests at Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School, to celebrate International Day of Pink by highlighting student-based anti-bullying initiatives. TCDSB Director of Education Rory McGuckin, Superintendent Shawna Campbell, Blessed Cardinal Newman Catholic High School Principal Kristine Carey, and several student leaders, joined Deputy Chief Peter Yuen and members of the TPS for this special celebration. The International Day of Pink started when a Nova Scotia teen was bullied for wearing a pink shirt to school. His fellow students rallied by all wearing pink and showed their solidarity against LGBTQ-based discrimination. Click here for more photos from the event.

BM/TM Presents ‘Look at You’ On Saturday April 14, 2018 members of the BM/TM original hip hop musical production 'Look at You' participated in the Regional Showcase at the University of Toronto's Hart House where they earned an Award of Excellence in writing and musical composition. Our Lady of Peace Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast Our Lady of Peace held a Volunteer Appreciation Breakfast on Wednesday April 18, 2018 in honour of all their wonderful parent volunteers, as a thank you for all the hard work they do for the school community.

St. Richard Celebrates Announcement of the Meadoway St. Richard Catholic School was thrilled to be invited to participate in a Birds of Prey demonstration on April 10 by the Toronto Region Conservation Authority. This was part of an announcement by Toronto Mayor John Tory about the Meadoway, an urban green space that will transform the power corridor in Scarborough into one of Canada’s largest linear urban parks. Students had a chance to chat with the Mayor as well as hear from Anishinaabe band member Kim Wheatley who spoke about the important role that students have in the future of the creation and preservation of the Meadoway. TCDSB Attends Meagan’s Walk Crane Ceremony On April 10, students from various TCDSB elementary and secondary schools visited the Hospital for Sick Children to participate in the annual Meagan’s Walk Crane Ceremony. Many TCDSB schools have raised a significant amount of money for Meagan’s Walk through various fundraising events over the years. Today, they were able to attend this special ceremony to present hundreds of beautiful paper cranes to Meagan’s Walk Heroes and to hear the stories of several brave children. Who Run the World at BM/TM On Friday April 6, the female empowerment group, "Who Run the World" set out with a few friends to compete in 11 Divisions’ Toronto Police Challenge. It was a competition, but it was also a day of mutual support - to face and conquer individual challenges. Everyone who came out, came out to complete a seemingly insurmountable task. The day began with fears and worries of “I don’t think I can do this” and “it looks so hard” and “I’m so anxious.” However, with words of faith in each other, encouraging applause, and screams of support to not give up, we were able to achieve new heights! They ran, they rolled, they pushed, they pulled, they dragged, they jumped and they stood tall! Tatiana Teixeira received an award for fastest female to complete the obstacle course. Nicholas Nogueira won for fastest male from the school and we came in second as a team. Click here for more photos from the event.

St. Joseph Morrow Park Remembers Victims of North Toronto Tragedy Students and staff at St. Joseph Morrow Park created a card to remember the victims of the Toronto van attack on April 23, 2018. Pictured with the card is Joli Hatos, student supervisor. Creating the card gave the school an opportunity to reflect and pray for those who died and all who were impacted by the tragedy.

2018 Cardboard Car Races The 3rd annual TCDSB Elementary Cardboard Car Races were held at St. Bruno/St. Raymond on April 4, 2018. The competition challenges students to work in teams of four to build a full-sized cardboard car to race against their competitors. Students applied their engineering skills to measure and build their car out of cardboard, strong and stable enough to race in. Teams had only 2.5 hours to submit plans, layout their designs, and build their cars before they raced them down a ramp and onto a marked course that measured their speed and stability. Finishing in 3rd place was Epiphany of Our Lord Catholic School, St. Pius X Catholic School took 2nd and in 1st place was the team from St. Bruno/St. Raymond Catholic School. 2018 TCDSB Environment Conference On March 29, TCDSB EcoSchool students and environment reps congregated at the Ontario Science Centre to celebrate the 2nd annual TCDSB Environment Conference - an ideal opportunity for all to celebrate the many initiatives promoting environmental education as well as environmentally responsible action in the school setting. The audience received information on the impacts of Climate Change through a workshop facilitated by the Ontario Science Centre, as well as various student-led TED Talk’s focused on environmental sustainability and responsible practices, including: fast fashion, animal habitats and food gardens, waste diversion/water conservation and responsible stewardship of our planet's resources. Michael Power/St. Joseph Mother-Daughter Tea Michael Power/St. Joseph C.S.S. hosted the 10th annual Mother Daughter Tea this year— celebrating the well-being of women in honor of International Women’s Day. Together with over 280 guests, everyone enjoyed a wonderful evening filled with music, refreshments, and memories to last a lifetime. Everyone walked away knowing the importance of self-advocacy, self-esteem, and women’s empowerment. The Mother-Daughter Wellness committee will provide two scholarships for two female students who will pursue the study of mental, physical, spiritual, or emotional well-being at a post-secondary institution. As John Wesley said, “Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, as long as you can”. A clarion call indeed to all of us to act.

Autism Awareness Flag Raising Ceremony On Monday April 9, 2018 staff, students, parents and special guests gathered at the Catholic Education Centre for the Autism Awareness Flag Raising ceremony. 5th Block Visits On April 4, Members of Education Council were invited to visit 5th Block classrooms across the Board. 5th Block teachers from Our Lady of the Assumption, St. Lawrence, and St. Marcellus welcomed senior staff into their classrooms. The 5th Block Early Reading Intervention program was first piloted in the TCDSB in 1998 and has been adapted for the 2017-2018 school year to include a numeracy focus. The program is intended for students in grades 1 and 2 who require additional support in reading and are experiencing difficulty developing foundational skills. Currently, there are 44 programs in 42 schools. 5th Block teachers work with small groups of students (max. 6 students per group) for one hour per day for 16 weeks. While in the program, students receive intensive, explicit instruction. Running record data consistently demonstrates the effectiveness of the program. Results from this Fall indicate that grade 2 students made gains of almost 6 running record levels as a result of the program. Click here for more photos from the visits.

Clean Toronto Together School Cleanup Day In response to the City of Toronto’s invitation, the TCDSB encouraged all schools and administrative sites to participate in the Clean Toronto Together Campaign. On Friday April 20, 2018, staff and students pitched in to clean up the grounds around their school and offices. Mayor John Tory joined TCDSB Director Rory McGuckin, Councillor Christin Carmichael Greb (Ward 16 Eglinton-Lawrence), Superintendent Peter Aguiar and students of Blessed Sacrament Catholic School for a school community cleanup and environmental activities in celebration of Earth Day and the City's Clean Toronto Together campaign. Student activities included an environmental book read-aloud, bird- house making, community cleanup and Earth Day activity stations. The sunshine made for a perfect cleanup day. Sacred Heart at the Heart of Equity and Inclusivity In the spirit of Equity and Inclusivity, on Friday April 20, Sacred Heart honoured students with autism. All staff and students wore blue to support our special students, raising the autism flag and participating in Variety Village wheelchair basketball in our school gym. The school also unveiled a mural which celebrates the abilities of all students. The Sacred Heart community looks forward to the continued celebration of students with autism and the Sacred Heart students and staff that support them. Click here for more photos from the event.

St. Joseph’s College Girls’ Night In On Friday April 13, 2018, St. Joseph’s College School’s Student Council hosted a Girls’ Night In. The students of St. Joseph’s were joined by over 160 grade 6 and 7 girls from elementary schools from across the city. The girls enjoyed participating in a number of activities including, Henna, nail painting, friendship bracelet making and much more. The girls also shared a pizza dinner, watched a film and formed new friendships. It was an honour to share the SJCS spirit!!

Soft Choice and Lenovo Day of Service at St. John XXII On Wednesday April 18, St. John XXIII welcomed 75 volunteers from Soft Choice and Lenovo. These very special visitors donated their time and funds towards the improvement of the school. Through their generous donations St. John XXII was able to refurbish the library, purchase gym mats, and increase technology. Students were treated to career talks, science experiments and computer training. The entire school community is so grateful for the support it has received from these two companies this year.
