2011 Game Day Program o m

WELCOME TO ANOTHER SEASON OF FURY SOCCER. Four games

over the opening weekend is an exciting way to begin. A warm welcome e to the , , Laval Comètes and . Last year was a tremendous one for the Club. Our 17 Girls won the North American Super Y-League Championship, we were ranked 2 nd of all SYL clubs in North America for performance on and off the field and our W-League and PDL teams both won their divisions for the 7 th and 2nd successive year respectively. The Men and the Women both advanced to the Conference Finals before falling to the Buffalo Flash and Reading Rage. There is a brand new look to the Fury Women this year. With so many of our 2010 players representing Canada, Australia and New Zealand in this summer’s World Cup in Germany, new head coach Dom Oliveri has been extra busy bringing together a new squad with the potential to contend for this year’s W-League championship to be held in Seattle. The team started off the season with back to back victories at Rochester and Hamilton last weekend, It will also be a very fresh and young looking PDL team in 2011 with a number of fan favorites like Will Beaugé and Justin Dasah having lost their U-23 status and others such as Adrian LeRoy and Martin John moving on to professional careers with FC Edmonton and Cardiff City. With 2010 coach Carl Valentine accepting a position with the MLS Vancouver Whitecaps, new coach Steve Payne has the task of building a new squad. The Men started off the season with a loss in Hamilton last Sunday. This weekend, the Men will be out to protect our very impressive 26 game unbeaten home record in regular season PDL play. With plans for a refurbished Frank Clair stadium in the works, the possibility of a pro soccer team and Ottawa bidding to host the 2014 (U-20) and 2015 FIFA Women’s World Cup, the future for soccer in Ottawa looks bright! Success brings it rewards but also places increased financial burdens on the Club and its teams. Ensuring that our W-League, PDL and youth teams have access to the very best facilities, coaching and competition is only possible due to the assistance of our sponsors, advertisers, partners and in the case of our younger players, our parents. A huge thank you to all and to all our supporters. Enjoy a summer of great soccer. John Pugh Owner and CEO Be Part of It

Ottawa Fury Notebook Friday, June 3 rd TODAY’S GAME BETWEEN THE OTTAWA FURY (2-0-0) and the Rochester Ravens (1-1-0) marks the home opener for the Fury Women who are coming off an impressive road trip to open the season that saw them defeat Rochester (2-0) and Hamilton (1-0) returning to the Nation’s Capital with all six possible points to kick the 2011 W-League season off in good form.

The Fury enter 2011 having won the division the past seven seasons and will have the Laval Comètes, Quebec City Amirals and Toronto Lady Lynx, among others, looking to knock them off their perch. Over the past 8 seasons the Fury Women have been the jewel of the W-League, but have yet to capture their crown – Ottawa is the league’s most successful franchise not to have women the W-League Championship owning the league third best all-time record (104-23-16). As always the goal is to win the W-League Championship so the Fury hope to produce another dominant season and book their ticket to Seattle, WA home of the 2011 Championship Finals.

New faces will be aplenty for the Fury Women this season beginning at the head coach position where long-time W-League assistant coach Dom Oliveri takes over the head coaching reigns and has assembled a strong group of NCAA talent after losing many international players like Amber Hearn, Ria Percival, Aivi Luik and Tameka Butt to the FIFA Women’s World Cup as they represent their respective countries this summer in Germany. Joining Oliveri on the bench is veteran Fury Youth coach Kwesi Loney who has seen success at the Super Y-League level as well as at the collegiate level as the head coach of the Algonquin Thunder (Men) and presently as the assistant coach of the (Men) under veteran head coach Sandy MacKie.

Leadership this season will come from W-League veteran Jasmine Phillips who has been named team captain for 2011 following another stellar campaign posting a 7-1-3 record with 5 shutouts in 2010. With Melissa Busque, Courtney Wetzel, Alyssa Lagonia and Casey Ramirez returning the Fury Women will have a strong core with W-League experience there to support the newcomers.

The Fury surrendered the second fewest goals in 2010 thanks not only to strong defence and timely goalkeeping, but the possession game that the Fury have made innate to their success in each of the past 8 seasons that they have travelled to the post-season. Since Algonquin College became the Fury’s home in 2008 the Fury Women have been dominant against the opposition owning a home record of 17-1-2 – a trend that they hope will continue in 2011.

Let the Road to Seattle Begin!

201 1 Ottawa Fury Game Day Program 17

Ottawa Fury Notebook Saturday, June 4 th

TODAY’S GAME BETWEEN THE OTTAWA FURY (0-1-0) and the Western Mass Pioneers (3-0-1) will see the Fury Men look to defend their 26-game regular season home unbeaten streak (21-0-5) against a team that they defeated 2-0 in their home opener last season. The Fury are coming off a tough 5-0 loss at the hands of PDL newcomers Hamilton FC Rage on Sunday night in Hamilton and will look to their home opening weekend double header to collect six points and get back on track.

With back-to-back division titles under their belt and consecutive trips to the playoffs the Fury Men have set the bar high for 2011 with their goal being to reach the PDL Final Four and challenging for a North American Championship. Ottawa will face divisional foes MPS Portland, Western Mass, Vermont and New Hampshire in a battle for the divisional crown and will also face Hamilton, FC London and Toronto in cross-conference play.

Like the Fury Women, the Fury Men’s team boasts a very new look this season with new international talent joining a strong core of local players and NCAA and NAIA standouts. With 2010 head coach Carl Valentine accepting a position with the Vancouver Whitecaps of the MLS, the Fury hired Steve Payne to take the Fury to the next step in 2011. Payne has assembled three solid goalkeepers, all of whom have graduated from the Fury Youth Program, plenty of size in the back four and a cluster on award-winning midfielders and strikers hoping that this proves to be the right recipe for success in 2011. Joining Payne on the sidelines is long-time Fury Youth coach Klaus Linnenbruegger who has been an assistant with the Fury PDL squad under head coach Colin McCurdy and has also led the now-defunct Ottawa Wizards to a CSL Championship.

Boasting the PDL’s third best record of the past three seasons (32-6-10) behind 2010 PDL Finalist Chill and fourth place finishers Reading United the Fury are in plain sight on their opposition’s radar and will require a high standard of work ethic to make a lengthy playoff run. Head coach Steve Payne believes that “hard work can beat talent, unless talent works hard.” Either way, all players will require a determined effort every night if the Fury hope to find themselves still playing in the month of August.

Let the hard work begin!
