While the hegemonic ideology surrounding sport is that it brings different people together and ameliorates social boundaries, sociologists of sport have shown this to be a gross simplification. Instead, sport is often seen to reinforce and recreate social stereotypes and boundaries, especially as it regards race and the black athlete in body and culture. At best we can think of sport as a contested terrain for both maintaining and challenging racial norms and boundaries. The mediated black athlete has thus always, for better or worse, impacted popular white perceptions of blackness broadly and globally. While much work has been done to expose the workings of race and racism in sport, studies have tended to homogenize black populations and have not taken into account the varying histories and complexities of, specifically, black African migrant athletes. -

Get Ready For Kojo’s Life Journey 2008 1 All About Kojo Kojo’s Home and Family Kojo’s Nursery Kojo’s Name The Beginning Kojo’s Time with June Kojo’s Mum and Dad More About Kojo 2008 2 (scan in photograph) This is Kojo and as you can see he is a fine looking boy, with big brown eyes and a great smile! Kojo was born on the 5th April 2004, so that makes him 4 years old at the moment. Kojo is fit and healthy and he has plenty of energy. He is tall and just about the right size for a 4 year old and of course, his mum and dad think that he is just lovely! Kojo likes being outside either riding his bike, playing football and going to the park. He has lots of toys – but his favourites are his cars. Kojo just loves cars - small ones, large ones, fast ones, slow ones, electronic ones, push along ones, ones with wheels and even ones without wheels 3 Kojo just loves cars! 4 Kojo lives in a town called Newton, with his mum and dad. Kojo’s mum is called Pat and his dad is Samuel, but most people call him Sam for short. They are both from sunny Ghana, in West Africa, and they speak both English and Twi. They left Ghana many years ago, in 1990, and came to live and work in Britain, and now they live in Newton. Kojo’s dad is a chemist and before Kojo became their son, his mum worked on the computers in the College in Newton. -

79I /f NIGERIAN MILITARY GOVERNMENT AND PRESS FREEDOM, 1966-79 THESIS Presented to the Graduate Council of the North Texas State University in Partial Fulfillment of the Requirements For the Degree of MASTER OF ARTS By Ehikioya Agboaye, B.A. Denton, Texas May, 1984 Agboaye, Ehikioya, Nigerian Military Government and Press Freedom, 1966-79. Master of Arts (Journalism), May, 1984, 3 tables, 111 pp., bibliography, 148 titles. The problem of this thesis is to examine the military- press relationship inNigeria from 1966 to 1979 and to determine whether activities of the military government contributed to violation of press freedom by prior restraint, postpublication censorship and penalization. Newspaper and magazine articles related to this study were analyzed. Interviews with some journalists and mili- tary personnel were also conducted. Materials collected show that the military violated some aspects of press freedom, but in most cases, however, journalists were free to criticize government activities. The judiciary prevented the military from arbitrarily using its power against the press. The findings show that although the military occasionally attempted suppressing the press, there are few instances that prove that journalists were denied press freedom. Research Focus: European Media Discourses of Africa
Research focus: European Media Discourses of Africa blogs.lse.ac.uk/polis/2015/12/16/research-focus-european-media-discourses-of-africa/ 2015-12-16 Eva Polonska-Kimunguyi is a Visiting Fellow at LSE doing research into European (international) broadcasting and its coverage of African affairs. Looking at four international broadcasters: BBC World Service, France 24, German Deutsche Welle, and pan-European Euronews, her research combines media and international relations. It looks at the broadcasters’ policies towards Africa, their narratives on African issues in the news on the one hand, as well as African perceptions of European discourses on the other. The project will examine how the media policies and discourses all sit within the broader Europe-Africa relations and where they can take us in the future. On the whole, the majority of news from Africa as reported by European international broadcasters from Europe is not positive. Despite the proliferation of special interest programs, such as ‘African Voices’ (CNN), ‘Focus on Africa’ (BBC), or ‘Africa on the Move’ (DW), the old journalistic maxim ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ remains strong in the news sections. A quick survey of African topics trending in European broadcasters’ news quickly reveals a never-ending spectacle of blood, deadly blasts, victims, state of emergency and ‘catastrophic’ levels of things. Politicians traveling to the continent also see some of its countries such as Kenya as ‘hotbed of terror’. Africa is hardly seen as a hotbed of creativity or innovation. The old-age stereotypes of Africa as a problem prevail. If we go deeper into the stories, we will discover that it is mostly non-African voices that speak about Africa. -

DEMOCRACY AND NIGERIAN JOURNALISM OF THE 90s Elo Ibagere Abstract That democracy has become the fashionable political system in the world is indubitable. The enthronement of democracy in Nigeria has been a perennial struggle which some people and some professions have been fully involving. One of the most significant professions involved in this struggle is journalism. Members of this profession have been lost to the struggle. It is the bitter struggle for democracy, including the adverse consequences of the struggle that this paper focuses upon. It is concluded that journalism having won the struggle, has come of age and can, therefore lead the nation into the new millennium. The paper, however, admonished journalists not to feel complacent for the evolution of the current nascent democracy, as the system can only be consolidated with the sincerity of purpose of the government of the day as well as the desire of a succeeding one to build on the little gains we have made. Introduction Nigerian journalism, like that of other African countries, has a history characterized by an unending struggle for freedom. The fight for freedom has been without prejudice to the fact that successive regimes have consistently proclaimed the press as one of the freest in the world. Right from its humble beginning with the establishment of Iwe Irohin in 1859, journalism in Nigeria has had to battle with press laws which have sought to mulct the power of the press, muzzle journalist into subservience and reduce the practice of journalism into mere purveyance of government policies and announcements. The dogged fight for press freedom has claimed many casualties, as journalists have remained steadfast in the hope that there are better days ahead during which journalism would regain its pride of place as a true fourth estate of the realm. -
