For nearly two decades, Peter White has maintained a reputation as one of the most versatile and prolific acous- tic guitarists on the contemporary jazz scene. The Column By Chuck Van Riper

Just Say No to Just Say No s an old hippie, growing up in the Sixties, and being a Amusician for all these years, you may think my views on drugs to be somewhat biased. Well, you’re probably right. I DID try marijuana once and I DID inhale and thought it was the greatest thing ever! After all the Doritos and chocolate milk were gone, I went to sleep and awoke the next day feeling totally fine. I noticed no hangover. I didn’t want to kill anyone. I didn’t want to steal from anybody. There was no violence involved in the whole incident. Just the opposite, actually. After melting into my beanbag chair and spacing out on my black light poster of Jimi Hendrix for a few hours, I contemplated the how cool it would be if the world could somehow peacefully coexist. I decided that much more extensive research was needed. In the eyes of the law, however, these actions were considered worthy of a couple of decades in prison and the total ruination of an otherwise productive life. Back in the Sixties and Seventies, everybody was ready for the legalization of marijuana, including the cigarette companies, who had already spent mega-bucks on advertising campaigns. Then came the “War on Drugs”, started in the Nixon administration and proliferated with the Reagan “Just Say No” campaign. So, now, something that wasn’t really a problem to start with became a huge problem for both sides. So, how did that Just Say No campaign work out? Forty years later, here’s the statistics according to the latest findings by the Associated Press: The War on Drugs has cost taxpayers a little more than a trillion dollars so far. • $20 billion has been spent on eradicating drugs in other countries. For example, 6 billion was spent on destroying coca crops in Columbia, only to have the crops and violence associated with it, move to Mexico. • $33 billion has been spent on advertising campaigns like “Just Say No”. Despite this, drug use in High Schools has remained about the same as 1970, and drug overdoses have “risen steadily” since the Seventies. • $49 billion has been spent on law enforcement along the Mexican border. Despite this, “this year, 25 million Americans will snort, swallow, inject and smoke illicit drugs, about 10 million more than in 1970, with the bulk of those drugs imported from Mexico.” • $121 billion is the cost of arresting 37 million non-

22 - Brevard Live June 2010

violent drug users, about 10 million of them for marijuana possession. The studies show that prison time increases drug abuse. • $450 billion is what it cost to incarcerate those in federal prison alone! Approximately half of those in these prisons are there for drug offenses. Now, I’m not condoning or condemning drug use. That is an individual decision that I, or the government, should not have a say in. I’m just saying that the TRILLION dollars spent thus far on this campaign has been a huge waste of taxpayer dollars that could be spent more effectively elsewhere. How about drug education and rehabilitation centers instead of prison? How about using that money to pay our teachers more, or taking care of infrastructure problems, or paying off the national debt, or giving us real health care, or taking care of the poor and needy, or a plethora of other neglected situations. The war on drugs has failed miserably and cost tons of bucks. Legalization would save billions, end the drug wars on the borders and elsewhere, get rid of the black market, and lower costs (woo-hoo!). So tell your representatives it’s time to just say no to just say no! Now I have to get back to my Doritos and chocolate milk.

Think Out “Of The Box” And Get “Enigma-tized”

hat is an enigma? The term was used as Wa name for a complex coding machine made during the Second World War. It is also defined as a puzzle, riddle or something mys- terious and difficult to explain - sometimes re- quiring the full force of someone’s deductive ability to solve it.

What is Enigma? The name and culinary concept came from the eclectic mind of owner Debby Ingram. The loca- tion is easy to find on A1A in Satellite Beach. The puzzle is that she offers fine dining with a casual atmosphere. Its a place where you can solve your hunger with a Designer Shrimp Pasta in the comfort of your favorite flip flops or kick back and enjoy a juicy Angus Burger in your best de- signer suit. The menu is inexplicable because it features a diverse variety of meals from lasagna to fajitas, escargot to veal and everything in between. The kitchen must be fully stocked because they have a dish for everyone’s taste, mood or craving. Vegetarian selections are available and the salad bar option is not to be missed. Its a cool treat on a hot sum- mer day. Evenings are enigmatic with live music regularly on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Special appearances by great line up of local favorites like Don Soledad, Mark Baker, The Sandra Purdy Trio and the rhythmic Drift Ses- sion. on Teixeira, jazz pianist, ranks right up there Ras one of Brevard’s best musicians. A decep- tively relaxed stylist, the Berklee College of Music graduate spent nearly 20 years as a studio and jazz musician in New York City, before circling back to his former home in Florida. A Cocoa Beach High School graduate, he moved to Brevard when he was 11 years old.

He honed his skills in Greenwich Village clubs, played at mid-town hotels like the Plaza and Waldorf Astoria, and appeared at famous restaurants like the Tavern on the Green. Just a few of the luminaries he worked with: the Mills Brothers, Shirelles, Pat Martino and Woody Herman. NYC was good to the pianist but the desire to visit family members, including his mother and father, kept him running the roads. Although he had a great job working as house pianist for Emon Durans’ restaurant near Madison Square Garden, in 1995 he elected to leave the bright lights of NYC and return to the beaches. He moved to Florida thinking he had a job with Dino’s house band. When the job didn’t materialize he moved on to become a member of Dave Fiester’s “Legendary Groove Monsters” band. The hot blues/rock group was in its hey- day. It played locally as well as at venues like the House of Blues in Orlando. The band also toured, working with famed guitarist Les Dudek and major rock groups like the A few years after settling in at Heidi’s, the 49-year-old Marshall Tucker Band. For 32 years Ed’s Heads (to a very few aka known as Ed Volonnino) has hand-carved tikis mostly on street cor- ners, in malls and in restaurants and bars. He had to stop this Ed’s Heads past April when he overextended his carving arm lifting a By Joan Bixby log. The unique results might best be are a multitude of Ed’s Heads tikis described as the work of a Polynesian Picasso. to choose from. If you’ve lived in Ed is undeniably an artist. He says he never dreamed of being anything else and knew it was his calling back when Brevard for a while, you have probably he attended Cocoa Beach High School. He carved his first already purchased one or more of your tiki in 1978 and says, “I’m addicted to carving. Even if I win favorites. If you are relatively new to the lottery, I’ll still carve.” As for his painting, his technique is somewhat sculptural. 42 - Brevard Live June 2010 As far as selling his work, Ed exhibits at local art shows but has never joined a gallery. Tikis are advertised and sold on the spot or on his website. Now that he is producing paintings he realizes that he may have to ex- hibit them somewhere. For a start he is displaying some of his paintings for sale at Molly Mutt, the Humane Soci- ety thrift shop at 728 East New Haven Avenue, downtown Melbourne. An environmentalist from the beginning, Ed has never cut down a tree for a tiki. He collects dead Sabal palms, letting them age a year and a half in the shade of his back yard to dry them out. He says it’s getting harder and harder to find trees and appreciates calls from locals asking him to remove dead palms from their yards. He is obsessed with cutting deep into the wood, using his chis- els and hammer in order to develop whimsical expres- sions that set his art apart. The idea to apply paint to his natural Polynesian- style tikis came from Leon Russell, legendary singer, songwriter and pianist who Ed met at Brassy’s in 1984. “I was a DJ,” said Ed. “It was the last job I had. I gave Leon one of my tikis. He called me later to ask if it was all right to paint it because he planned to use it on the cover of his new album, “Solid State.” It looked fine on the album and from then on, many of Ed’s tikis sported a paint job that set them apart from others being sold, one of the many ways Ed’s tikis have changed over the years. The bonus - he has been able to avoid what he calls “a real job” ever since meeting Russell. Eighteen years ago Ed met and married Christina, the love of his life. “She really helps me,” he says. “Once you find someone to love, it’s really nice.” Christiana is a Traffic Director for a local radio station, a demanding job. “I’m a performing artist,” explains Ed. “I put on a show when I carve.” He enjoys participating in school career days, hoping to inspire the kids to follow their dreams. For years he carved tikis on the deck of Conky Joe’s, now Squid Lips, in Melbourne. He has appeared several times on TV: Home and Garden, Focus, and PM Magazine, and has the DVDs to prove it. Two books in- clude stories about his self-taught talent, and his work can be seen in two movies. Boxes of clippings from newspa- pers and magazines which were written about him over the years overflow on the coffee table. Thanks in large part to his website, he has sold to people from all over the U.S. as well as to folks in other countries. The one question he says he receives from everyone, he can’t answer. How long does it take you to do a tiki? “It’s art,” he says. “Every piece is different. I never know what it’s going to look like until I finish. I just go.” Talk to Ed at 321-255-9835 or check out his website www.edsheadstikis.com

Brevard Live June 2010 - 43 This Man’s Best Friend By Matthew Bretz n the last decade of my life I have endured three Igreat heartbreaks, multiple changes of employ- ment, ups and downs with finances, family deaths, and just this year two great friends passed away, one by his own hand. None of this is any more tur- bulence than the average person has to navigate. It’s called life. You take the good with the bad, that’s the deal. But everyone needs something to help them cope, something to get them through the rough spots. I have wonderful friends and a fantas- tic family, and for the most part I can count on them for support. But when it really comes down to it the one constant that always puts me right again is the bond I have with my Rhodesian ridgeback, Baxter. I’ve written a lot about relationships throughout the duration of this column. The good, the bad and the weird. This month I want to talk to you about a different kind of relationship. A very important one to me.

Not long ago a distraught friend visited me at work on the edge of tears. She had just come from the vet’s of- fice where she had to watch her beloved dog of 14 years be “put to sleep.“ Her “girl” had cancer and after months of expensive treatment it was time to give in to nature and let her go. She told me she had even lost her job over it because they found out she had taken time off to care for her sick dog. I couldn’t help but think of the day, some time in the future, when I will undoubtedly have to endure something similar. Baxter turned nine this year. The ex- perts give most large breeds nine to twelve years. For the last nine years that seemed ridiculous to me. Bax still acts like a puppy and hasn’t shown any signs of aging at all. But this year, almost over night, his snout became white, his spurts of energy started to lessen in frequency and his back legs are getting stiff in the mornings. He’s still my vibrant, goofy boy, but I can see time beginning to creep and it makes me anxiously sad. According to the Humane Society there are over 77.5 million dogs owned in American households. That’s 39 percent of all American homes and we aren’t even talking
