- 19 - ▶ Port Infrastructure for the Offshore Wind Energy Industry

Offshore Terminal Bremerhaven (OTB) When good becomes perfect

▶ The new heavy-load terminal is an essential facility for directly connecting the Luneort industrial estate to water deep enough for seagoing ships, enabling vessels to avoid the present restrictions of water depth and width posed by locks.

▶ To reduce costs, here turbines can be loaded directly from the plant onto seagoing vessels with up to 14.5 metres draft.

▶ An added advantage of the new terminal is that it will bring down logistics costs, leading indirectly to a reduction in the cost of power generated by offshore wind.

▶ The construction of the OTB began in early 2016. At present, it can not be continued on the grounds of a court decision in a court case brought by the “Bund für Umwelt und Naturschutz Bremen e.V.”

- 22 - ▶ Research and Development

Excellent Research & Development infrastructure

▶ Offshore wind energy is a dynamic industry with huge needs in research and development . Bremerhaven has a superb research infrastructure at its disposal. ▶ The Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy Systems Technology (IWES) , founded in 2009, conducts research and development on the key challenges facing the wind energy industry. There is e.g. the rotor blade test centre in Bremerhaven, boasting two test rigs for rotor blades up to 90 metres in length. Complete nacelles can be tested in the Dynamic Nacelle Testing Laboratory (DyNaLab). ▶ The fk wind Institute for Wind Energy at the University of Bremerhaven is engaged in applied research in wind energy technology in close collaboration with the Master’s degree programme in wind energy technology . ▶ Deutsche WindGuard Engineering operates a unique, acoustically optimised wind tunnel for wind energy research purposes.

- 23 - ▶ Research and Development

Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy Systems (IWES) in Bremerhaven

▶ The research activities of the Fraunhofer Institute for Wind Energy and Energy System Technology IWES (est. in 2009) cover wind energy and the integration of renewable energies into energy supply structures.

▶ The IWES Rotor Blade Competence Center in the industrial area Am Seedeich is a common project of the Federal Government and the counties of Lower Saxony and Bremen.

▶ Tasks of the test- and competence center rotor blade in halls with up to 90m length are

• full scale rotor blade tests • tests on components • tests on material • tests in a climate chamber • developments of new rotor blade concepts

- 24 - ▶ Research and Development

Nacelle Test Stand (DyNaLab) at IWES

▶ The Dynamic Nacelle Laboratory (DyNaLab) is the first nacelle test facility in Germany for testing drive powers up to 10 megawatts. ▶ The Dynamic Nacelle Testing Laboratory (DyNaLab) offers wind turbine manufacturers reliable tests under realistic conditions in the laboratory, contribute to the evaluation and optimization of established and future turbine concepts. ▶ The test stand is being jointly funded by the Federal Ministry for the Environment (BMU), the State of Bremen, and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF). ▶ At present, a new test stand is even under construction and will be implemented in spring 2019. This new facility will be used to test so-called minimal systems, the unit of fast-running generators and inverters.

- 25 - ▶ Research and Development

BladeMaker-DemoCenter at IWES in Bremerhaven

▶ The manufacturing of rotor blades still demands a high degree of manual labor. This is due to the low piece numbers in a production series compared to the automotive industry for example. ▶ For manufacturers, the ability to produce parts more quickly and with a constantly higher level of precision can result in significant cost advantages. ▶ Together with 15 partners, the Fraunhofer IWES has coordinated the development of a manufacturing center which was inaugurated today in Bremerhaven. Thanks to special portals, in future eight process steps will be performed at one machine station in order to render the workflows more efficient.

- 26 - ▶ Research and Development

Wind Tunnel Centre Bremerhaven Head wind is welcome

▶ “Pretending as if” is practised at the Deutsche WindGuard wind tunnel centre. With funding from the state of Bremen, the German government, and the European Union, the acoustically optimised wind tunnel was designed specifically to meet the needs of wind energy utilisation. It offers optimal conditions for individual research and development projects in the offshore industry. ▶ The size of the test section enables the investigation of relatively large models or original segments. Deutsche WindGuard is also currently developing a special measuring system for the analysis of aerodyneamic profiles as well as innovative measuring technology for the acoustic optimisation of construction components.
