Dabei ist sie weit mehr als nur eine Dachorganisation der parallelen Interessen unterschiedlicher Forschungseinrichtungen. Denn der wach- sende Verbund vereint seine Mitglieder im Streben nach Er- kenntnis und Wahrheit, das dem Wohl des Menschen und der Gesellschaft sowie dem Wissen selbst zugute kommt. Davon zeugt auch die „koordinierte Dezentralität“, in der die For- Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kleiner schungsinstitute und Forschungsmuseen in großer eigener Präsident der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft Bewegungsfreiheit miteinander verbunden sind – oder viel- mehr, in der sie sich selbst aktiv verbunden haben. Die Leib- niz-Gemeinschaft als Ganzes ist innen vielfältig, geräumig und gestaltbar und bündelt Wissen, Können und Kräfte, wenn es gilt, einer Sache nach außen gemeinsames Gewicht zu verlei- hen. Sie lässt aber auch Raum für freie Sicht, wenn besondere Errungenschaften der Leibniz-Forscherinnen und -Forscher einmal unsere volle Aufmerksamkeit auf sich ziehen oder Er- eignisse und Entwicklungen in der Welt und in der Welt der Forschung Fokussierung erfordern. Diese Balance zwischen Zusammenhalt im Ganzen auf der einen und Freiraum ihrer einzelnen Mitglieder auf der ande- ren Seite ist ein herausragendes und wichtiges Charakteristi- kum der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft. Sie zu erhalten, aber auch im- mer wieder neu zu bestimmen und der Dynamik des Wissens und der Forschung anzupassen, wird weiterhin eine wichtige Aufgabe bleiben. Ich bin überzeugt, dass ein glückliches Ver- hältnis zwischen der Selbständigkeit der Forschungseinrich- tungen und der Zusammenarbeit im Verbund nicht nur das Alleinstellungsmerkmal, sondern auch der Schlüssel für eine erfolgreiche Zukunft der Leibniz-Gemeinschaft ist. Konkret bedeutet das: Den Instituten und Museen gelingt es regelmä- ßig und vielfach, den Mehrwert ihrer Eigenständigkeit mit origineller, ausgezeichneter, übertragbarer und vermittlungs- fähiger Forschung zu beweisen. Ebenso kann die gesamte Leibniz-Gemeinschaft in dem Maße souverän agieren, in dem ihre Mitglieder ihr mehr Identität geben. Und Mitgliedschaft 4 Vorwort Dear Readers, Today the Leibniz Association is home to no less than 89 member institutes which conduct basic research on a broad range of theoretical and practical questions and provide the necessary infrastructure for scientific enquiry. Much more than simply an umbrella organisation which connects diverse research institutions with parallel interests, the expanding Leibniz alliance is united in its members’ search for knowl- edge that serves not just science but humanity and society as a whole. This can be seen in the move toward ‘coordinated de- centralisation’, where research institutes and museums take Ausserhofer © David the initiative to make their own connections while enjoying Prof. Dr.-Ing. Matthias Kleiner greater freedom of movement. On the inside, the Leibniz As- President of the Leibniz Association sociation is manifold, spacious and flexible, which means that it can gather the necessary expertise and capacities to high- light issues that deserve recognition in the outside world. At the same time, the Association leaves space to acknowledge the outstanding achievements of its researchers and to focus attention on significant scientific and global developments. This balance of, on the one hand, overall cohesion and, on the other, freedom among individual members is perhaps the key defining characteristic of the Leibniz Association. We continue to direct our efforts toward maintaining and re-evaluating this balance in light of changing dynamics in science and research. I am convinced that the proper balance between research facilities’ self-sufficiency and their coop- eration as part of an alliance is not only the Leibniz Associ- ation’s mark of distinction, but also the key to its future suc- cess. More concretely, the ground-breaking and transferable research conducted by the institutes and museums consist- ently proves the real value of their independence – the Leibniz Association as a whole can act with the same degree of auton- omy which makes it so unique. Actively participating in the Leibniz Alliance grants increased individual and collective autonomy, which can be used and strengthened in a flexible and purposeful manner. Gerade angesichts der Erfolge, die die Leibniz-Gemeinschaft im und durch das Zusammenwachsen ihrer Mitglieder bisher erreicht hat, ist jetzt eine gute Zeit, ihre Stärken zu sammeln und im Verbund weiterzuentwickeln. Given the success that the Leibniz Association has enjoyed thus far as a result of its members growing closer, now is the time for the Association to harness its strength and develop the alliance further. International collaborations, initiation and participation in public debates, administrative stream- lining and coordination to benefit research – all of these things reflect the structural cohesion of the Leibniz Associ- ation and its facilities and elicit positive reactions. Such cru- cial activities in the alliance have the advantage of helping us understand tried and tested approaches and facilitate sub- ject-specific, time efficient solutions to common challenges. This in turn gives the strong research personalities and teams in the Leibniz Association

    PhD studentship (TV-L E13, 65%) “Metabarcoding of invertebrates” The Zoological Research Museum Alexander Koenig in Bonn (ZFMK) invites applications for a 3-year PhD position starting no later than May 1st, 2019. The position is part of the project "Integrative Analysis of the influence of pesticides and land use on biodiversity in Germany” (INPEDIV). The interdisciplinary joint research of seven partner institutes1 is led by the Zoological Research Museum Koenig and funded for 3 years by the Leibniz Competition. The aim of this study is to investigate consequences of organic and conventional farming for biodiversity in protected areas. By use of traditional methods and new technologies, we will examine agricultural land use effects on a broad range of plant and animal taxa at study sites in the Rhineland and in Brandenburg. We seek an enthusiastic and highly motivated candidate for field sampling and metabarcoding of invertebrates in the Center for Molecular Biodiversity Research at the ZFMK in Bonn. The main task of the PhD student is to analyze insect and soil fauna samples using novel metabarcoding bioinformatic pipelines and the GBOL reference database. The project will involve the analysis of metabarcoding sequence data from thousands of samples and their integration with data from soil pesticide and nutrient content, land-use patterns and vegetation characteristics, as well as with the occurrence of insectivorous vertebrate species. The PhD student will be supervised by a multi- disciplinary team led by Dr Sarah Bourlat (metabarcoding) and Dr Livia Schäffler (biodiversity assessments) and closely cooperate with researchers at partner institutes (vegetation, invertebrate and vertebrate ecologists, ecotoxicologists).

Specific and subspecific names are listed alphabetically, followed by the original genus name, bibliographic citation, original label information (in case of primary types), date and place collected, and finally the geographical coordinates (latitude and longitude based on geo-referencing process). Data capture was mainly done within the DIG project (‘Digitization of key Insect groups at ZFMK’). DIG is one of the subprojects of the German GBIF subnode Insecta. It is financially supported by the German Ministry of Science and Education (BMBF) and will run until the end of the year 2005. By adaptation to the ABCD schema (Access to Biological Collection Data) BIODAT became both a BIOCASE- (Biological Collection Access Service for Europe) and GBIF- (Global Biodiversity Information Infrastructure) provider. Therefore full information at the specimen level, and not only of type specimens, for selected ZFMK insect collections (starting with “Homoptera” & Orthoptera) will be sustainably available on the World Wide Web.
