Portuguese Family Names
Portuguese Family Names GERALD M. MOSER 1 Point Cabrillo reflects the Spanish spelling of the nickname of J oao Rodrigues Oabrilho - "the I(id," perhaps a play on words, if the Viscount De Lagoa was correct in assuming that this Portuguese navigator was born in one of the many villages in Portugal called Oabril (Joao Rodrigues Oabrilho, A Biographical Sketch, Lisbon, Agencia Geral do mtramar, 1957, p. 19). 2 Oastroville, Texas, -- there is another town of the same name in California - was named after its founder, Henry Oastro, a Portuguese Jew from France, who came to Providence, R.I., in 1827. From there he went to Texas in 1842, launching a colonization scheme, mainly on land near San Antonio. I came upon the story in the Genealogy Department of the Dallas Public Library, on the eve of reading to the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese a paper on "Cultural Linguistics: The Case of the Portuguese Family Names" (December 28, 1957). The present article is an enlarged version of that paper. 30 38 Gerald M. Moser versational style as 0 Gomes alfaiate, ("that Tailor Gomes"), same manner in which tradesmen and officials were identified in the Lis- . bon of the fifteenth century (see Appendix 2). E) A fifth type of family name exists in Portugal, which has not yet been mentioned. It includes names due to religious devotion, similar to but. not identical with the cult of the saints which has furnished so many baptismal names. These peculiar devotional names are not used as first names in Portugal, although some of them are commonly used thus in Spain. -
The Myth of the Marrano Names
THE MYTH OF THE MARRANO NAMES Texto publicado em Revue des Études Juives Tome 165 Juillet-décembre 2006 Fascicule 3-4 p.445-456. Anita Novinsky Laboratório de Estudos sobre a Intolerância Universidade de São Paulo The romantic historiography about the Marranos and Marranism created a series of myths in relation to the names adopted by the Jews during and after their forced conversion in 1497 in Portugal. The increasing interest in Sephardic history, mainly after 1992, nourished people’s mind with fantastic histories and legends, that made the Marrano chapter especially attractive. The greatest impact came when historians try to prove the attachment of the "Conversos" or New Christians to the Jewish religion and their desire to die in kiddush-hashem. Reality was quite different. Analyzing the trials of the Inquisition, we cannot be sure that the confessions of Judaism were true. In torture the Anussim confessed to everything the Inquisitors wanted to hear and they accused friends, neighbors, families. When we examine the trials carefully, we see that the answers and terms of the confessions were always the same, phrases and words repeated during three centuries. The indiscriminate divulgation of the myths related to Marrano history is dangerous, as within a few years it can lend to a distorted history of the descent of the Anussim.1 Research on Sephardic history based entirely on unknown manuscripts is actually been made at the University of Sao Paulo, and it is opening new perspectives to Marrano history that will allow us to understand better the multishaped phenomenon of Marranism.2 2 In relation to the names adopted by the Jews during the conversions of 1497, we have very rare direct references. -

Kabbalah 101+
Everything You Wanted To Know About Kabbalah But Had No One To Ask By Rabbi Ariel Bar Tzadok Copyright © 1995, 2003 by Ariel Bar Tzadok. All rights reserved. This lecture should be studied prior to any further study in Kabbalah. It is geared to all beginners, Jews and righteous Gentiles (benei Noah) alike. Introduction into the Oral Torah Regarding the holy Torah, the great Sage Ben Bag Bag is quoted as saying, “Hafukh Bah V’Hafukh Bah Ki Kula Bah” Turn it over again and again for everything is in it.” (Avot 5:25). The Sages of Israel have taught us that every bit of human knowledge is to be found in the holy Torah. All we have to know is how to find it. There has always been more to the Torah than meets the eye. Torah deals with far more than just our corporeal physical reality. Torah is the comprehensive guide to all metaphysical reality as well. It is these metaphysical teachings of the Torah that are today called the “Kabbalah.” First and foremost it must be understood that the teachings which today are called Kabbalah1 have always been an integral part of the Torah that Moses received from G-d on Mt. Sinai. Thus the Kabbalah has always been an essential part of the Jewish religion. Every serious student of the Bible, who reads it in the original Hebrew, recognizes that there are certain sections in the Torah, N’vi’im (prophets) and Ketuvim (writings) that 1 Unfortunately not all material in today’s market that is called Kabbalah is legitimate according to the Torah. -

The Lusiads and Pilgrimage
TRAMES, 2020, 24(74/69), 2, 179–199 THE LITERARY AND CULTURAL RESONANCES OF THE MYTH OF HENRY: THE LUSIADS AND PILGRIMAGE Maria Luísa de Castro Soares1,2 and Maria João de Castro Soares2 1Universidade de Trás-os-Montes e Alto Douro and 1,2Universidade de Coimbra Abstract. Two thematic lines: the omnipresence of the theme of the maritime voyage in Portuguese culture – which António Quadros calls the ‘myth of Henry’, – and its inflections in literature, more specifically, in Camões’s The Lusiads (Os Lusíadas) and Fernão Mendes Pinto’s Pilgrimage (Peregrinação) were examined. Thus, we focus on the state of the art about the topic of Henryism/the maritime voyage, taking into account the perspective of today’s Portuguese scholars, and we look at how this theme is expressed in The Lusiads and Pilgrimage, thereby proving that these Renaissance works remain vital for the actual imaginary of the Portuguese people. Keywords: Pilgrimage; The Lusiads; Luís de Camões; Fernão Mendes Pinto; Portuguese mythogenesis; Henry’s myth; maritime voyage; travel literature DOI: https//doi.org/10.3176/tr.2020.2.04 1. The Portuguese mythogenesis and the myth of Henry The following transcriptions of the works of three Portuguese Poets are the motto of the present work: “We seek nothing less than the impossible” (Vicente 1524).1 “The Sea, in the perpetual movement of its waves, is the realm of Desire. Here, the ecstatic spiritual recollection that wants to be the very thing remembered or evoked in the flesh. At sea, the spirit materializes itself for the Fight” (Pascoaes 1913). 1 The original verse (verse 1115) – ‘Por lo impossible andamos: no por ál’ – is a Dom Duardos soliloquy, in the Tragicomédia de Dom Duardos, that was written in 1524 by Gil Vicente (Soares 2007). -

Jewish Associational Networks and Ethnic Modernity in Interwar Sarajevo

CEU eTD Collection ii Abstract The purpose of this study is to investigate the effects of the particular historical circumstances of the interwar period on the advancement of Sarajevo Sephardim self- awareness, and on the modernization of their associational networks in the domestic and international spheres. The structure of the thesis follows the associational construction on the three levels of their existence: the Bosnian, Yugoslav, and international. The great variety of the societies that the Bosnian Sephardim created indicates the beginning of the civic initiatives and the modernization of their community. The sentimental reconnection with Spain was yet another manifestation of their Sephardi self-consciousness. Moreover, Zionism incited a specifically Sephardi reaction, that is, the foundation of the Sephardi movement in the international realm, wherein the Bosnian Sephardim played a significant role. Their ideology, Sephardism, was not a form of separatism from their majoritarian brethren Ashkenazim but a different way of interpretation Zionism without rejecting it. -
