Fall Learning Plan 2020 The Cathedral Approach “Bonded by open-heartedness, hope, compassion, and concern.” Cathedral School for Boys Mission We have worked steadily over the last few months to prepare a school that is both safe for students and faculty and continues to provide, even under changed and ever-shifting circumstances, “an excellent education for boys.” The last few months have reinforced our longstanding belief that students, especially those in elementary and middle school, learn best in person. However, we remain mindful that there are many factors beyond our control that will ultimately determine whether and when we return to campus. For that reason, we have also continued to improve upon the successful Distance Learning plan that we implemented last spring. Either way, we are well prepared for the eventualities of this fall. Cathedral School Fall Learning Plan 2020 is designed to provide our community with an outline focusing on the people, program, and place needed to safely and effectively educate our students when they return to campus. It also briefly outlines our revised approach to Distance Learning. As such, we operated with the following goals in mind: 1 Maintaining a necessary high level of health and safety 2 Assigning each student to a self-contained grade-level cohort that operates within a designated instructional space and avoids, as much as possible, contact with other student cohorts 3 Offering a high-quality educational experience within the spirit of our Mission As we all recognize, these are unprecedented times. Our ability to teach on campus must take into account a variety of public health guidelines that necessarily alter the school day, how we operate, and how our campus is configured. It must be noted that our ability to support learning on campus is contingent on individual and family health. Thus, our approach incorporates recommendations and expectations for healthy practices that take place off-campus and outside of the typical school day. We ask our community to followSan Francisco Department of Public Health guidelines. The complexities of returning in the fall are myriad and unlike any schools have had to face in recent history. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we respond to these most unusual times. I remain grateful that your family is a part of this special place. Rest assured that we remain committed to providing our boys with the best possible educational experience and that they will return to an institution “bonded by open-heartedness, hope, compassion, and concern.” Finally, we are especially appreciative of the time and expertise committed by the members of our Fall Planning Task Force. Without them, none of what follows would be possible. Very truly yours, Burns Jones Headmaster Fall Learning Plan 2020 1 We would like to thank the Fall Planning Task Force members for their time and dedication to our Fall Learning Plan 2020. Distance Learning Students will learn off campus as mandated by governmental officials or if dictated by specific circumstances at Cathedral School. Extended Distance Learning Students with specific diagnoses or families who have general health concerns about returning will be distance learning while the majority of students learn on campus. Fall Learning Plan 2020 3 On-Campus Learning In order to return to campus safely, our procedures focus on PEOPLE, PROGRAM, and PLACE with guidance from the CDC, California Department of Public Health, San Francisco Department of Public Health, and the School’s Fall Planning Task Force. 4 On-Campus Learning RETURNING TO CAMPUS At-A-Glance PEOPLE PROGRAM PLACE SMALL STUDENT COHORTS HAND WASHING/SANITIZING STATIONS MASKS & REORGANIZED CLASSROOMS 6 FEET K 2nd 1st etc. NO ON-CAMPUS VISITORS DEDICATED GRADE-LEVEL SOCIAL DISTANCING TEACHING TEAMS + HVAC AIR FILTRATION & PURIFICATION UPGRADES PRIORIZATION OF CORE MORNING HEALTH SCREENINGS ACADEMIC CLASSES NEW CLASSROOM FURNITURE/ SCHEDULED TIME FOR PE, PLEXIGLASS PARTITIONS NEW HEALTH ADMINISTRATOR RECESS, & BRAIN BREAKS SCHEDULED TIME FOR EXTENDED COVID-19 TESTING SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING ARRIVAL/STAGGERED DISMISSAL Fall Learning Plan 2020 5 On-Campus Learning PEOPLE Our community is our most treasured resource. Your boys are our boys. We believe that in-person learning is the best way to educate, so we have put new school-wide protocols in place to help ensure a healthy return to campus. Fall Learning Plan 2020 7 On-Campus Learning PROGRAM We are a small school and have always believed in small class sizes. Our Co-Teacher Model in the Lower School, in particular, has given us a leg-up on understanding how best to organize and educate small grade-level cohorts on campus. Fall Learning Plan 2020 8 On Campus Learning Programmatic Changes Programmatic Changes ALL SCHOOL Each grade will be split into roughly small student cohorts in both the Lower and Upper School. The rationale for this includes: 1 Reduced community exposure and better contact tracing 2 Additional grade-level planning and schedule flexibility for teachers 3 Improved learning outcomes due to smaller class sizes 4 Potential for interdisciplinary projects 3 8:30 1 2 Students remain Classrooms Extended In-classroom Aftercare in a limited capacity, in a consistent configured to arrival period from lunch provided. prioritizing adult caregivers with classroom, limiting support social 8:30 a.m.
