DOBBER’S 2010-11 FANTASY GUIDE DOBBERHOCKEY.COM – HOME OF THE TOP 300 FANTASY PLAYERS I think we’re at the point in the fantasy hockey universe where DobberHockey.com is either known in a fantasy league, or the GM’s are sleeping. Besides my column in The Hockey News’ Ultimate Pool Guide, and my contributions to this year’s Score Forecaster (fifth year doing each), I put an ad in McKeen’s. That covers the big three hockey pool magazines and you should have at least one of them as part of your draft prep. The other thing you need, of course, is this Guide right here. It is not only updated throughout the summer, but I also make sure that the features/tidbits found in here are unique. I know what’s in the print mags and I have always tried to set this Guide apart from them. Once again, this is an automatic download – just pick it up in your downloads section. Look for one or two updates in August, then one or two updates between September 1st and 14th. After that, when training camp is in full swing, I will be updating every two or three days right into October. Make sure you download the latest prior to heading into your draft (and don’t ask me on one day if I’ll be updating the next day – I get so many of those that I am unable to answer them all, just download as late as you can). Any updates beyond this original release will be in bold blue.

  • What‟S an NHL Draft Pick Worth? a Value Pick Chart for the National Hockey League Michael E
What‟s An NHL Draft Pick Worth? A Value Pick Chart for the National Hockey League Michael E. Schuckers1 St. Lawrence University and Statistical Sports Consulting [email protected] Introduction Each year the National Hockey League(NHL), a North American professional ice hockey league, assigns eligible players to its 30 teams via the NHL Entry Draft. For each of seven rounds, each team has one selection though these selections or picks may be traded for other players, for other draft picks or for a combination of these two. Additional picks may be awarded by the NHL to a team for losing a restricted free agent. In this paper we analyze data related to the National Hockey League draft and develop a value pick chart for establishing the value of a given selection. Thus, from the proposed value pick chart in this paper we can calculate the combinations of picks required to get equal value for the 1st or 3rd or 5th pick in the NHL Entry Draft. Data The analyses in this paper are based upon players selected in the NHL Entry Drafts from 1988 to 1997. These data were obtained from www.hockey-reference.com with additional information from www.nhl.com and www.eliteprospects.com. The choice of this ten-year period is based on a balance of two differing interests. We want to ensure that we base our metrics on career performance for players. Thus, we want players whose careers are complete or very nearly so. On the other hand, we want to construct our analyses on the most recently available information.

  • Ric Nattress Study
Ric Nattress Study PED – 201 John Byl Kevin DeJonge Mark Muller March 30, 2011 Ric Nattress is a Hamilton native that pursued his dreams by becoming a professional hockey player in the NHL. At the beginning of his career he was jumping back and forth from the Farm league to the big league. But soon he turned that into playing fulltime for five NHL franchises. His career spanned over eleven years. He was privileged to win the Calder cup with the Sherbrooke canadiens in 1985. He also was able to raise the holy grail of hockey, the Stanley Cup, with the Calgary flames in 1989. Nattress was also privileged to play for the Toronto Maple Leafs who are the local team and probably a team that he had the opportunity to watch as he was growing up. Ric Nattress was drafted in the second round of the 1980 NHL draft. He was drafted by the Montreal Canadians team. His professional career began in the minor league playing for the Sherbrooke Canadians. In the beginning of his career Nattress had some off ice issues. In the summer of 1983 he was fined $150 for possession of three grams of marijuana and one gram of hashish. He was caught by an undercover narcotics officer. According to the Toronto star it wasn’t his first time possessing drugs, “Provincial court Judge W.A. MacDonald said evidence showed the player’s use of drugs wasn’t an isolated incident, but had been occurring since his early teenage years.” (Thursday, August 11, 1983, F06 sports) These possessions of drugs lead to the NHL suspending Nattress for thirty games.

  • Nicknames and the Lexicon of Sports
NICKNAMES AND THE LEXICON OF SPORTS ROBERT KENNEDY TANIA ZAMUNER University of California, Santa Barbara Radboud University Nijmegen abstract: This article examines the structure and usage of nicknames given to professional hockey and baseball players. Two general types are observed: a phrasal referring expression and a single-word hypocoristic. The phrasal nickname is descrip- tive but is only used referentially, usually in sports narrative. The hypocoristic is used for both reference and address and may be descriptive or shortened from a formal name. In addition, its inclusion of a hypocoristic suffix is sensitive to the segmental content of the shortened form. A model of nickname assignment is proposed in which the creation of any kind of nickname is treated as enriching the lexicon. This model relates nicknames to other types of specialized or elaborate referring expres- sions and encodes the social meaning of nicknames and other informal names in the lexicon. The tradition of assigning nicknames to athletes is typical of all sports and is notably vibrant in baseball and hockey. Indeed, nicknaming practices are prevalent in many cultures and subcultures, carrying a wide range of social and semantic functions, and are often derived with specialized phonological structures. In this article, we study the athlete nickname as both a cultural and a linguistic phenomenon, focusing both on its function as a potential form of address and reference and on its form as a descriptive or shortened label. Like nicknames discussed in the studies surveyed in section 1 below, athlete nicknames carry social meaning about their referents; in many cases, they are also constrained in their phonological structure.
