HINDUISM IN EUROPE Stockholm 26-28 April, 2017 Abstracts 1. Vishwa Adluri, Hunter College, USA Sanskrit Studies in Germany, 1800–2015 German scholars came late to Sanskrit, but within a quarter century created an impressive array of faculties. European colleagues acknowledged Germany as the center of Sanskrit studies on the continent. This chapter examines the reasons for this buildup: Prussian university reform, German philological advances, imagined affinities with ancient Indian and, especially, Aryan culture, and a new humanistic model focused on method, objectivity, and criticism. The chapter’s first section discusses the emergence of German Sanskrit studies. It also discusses the pantheism controversy between F. W. Schlegel and G. W. F. Hegel, which crucially influenced the German reception of Indian philosophy. The second section traces the German reception of the Bhagavad Gītā as a paradigmatic example of German interpretive concerns and reconstructive methods. The third section examines historic conflicts and potential misunderstandings as German scholars engaged with the knowledge traditions of Brahmanic Hinduism. A final section examines wider resonances as European scholars assimilated German methods and modeled their institutions and traditions on the German paradigm. The conclusion addresses shifts in the field as a result of postcolonial criticisms, epistemic transformations, critical histories, and declining resources. 2. Firstly, the paper discusses the history and place of contemporary Hinduism within the religious map of Lithuania. -

Traditional mainstream media images of Witches tell us they are evil “devil worshipping baby killers,” green-skinned hags who fly on brooms, or flaky tree huggers who dance naked in the woods. A variety of mainstream media has worked to support these notions as well as develop new ones. Contemporary American popular culture shows us images of Witches on television shows and in films vanquishing demons, traveling back and forth in time and from one reality to another, speaking with dead relatives, and attending private schools, among other things. None of these mainstream images acknowledge the very real beliefs and traditions of modern Witches and Pagans, or speak to the depth and variety of social, cultural, political, and environmental work being undertaken by Pagan and Wiccan groups and individuals around the world. Utilizing social construction theory, this study examines the “historical process” of the construction of stereotypes surrounding Witches in mainstream American society as well as how groups and individuals who call themselves Pagan and/or Wiccan have utilized the only media technology available to them, the internet, to resist and re- construct these images in order to present more positive images of themselves as well as build community between and among Pagans and nonPagans. -

April 22, 2005 iii ABSTRACT PARTICIPATION, IDENTITY, AND SOCIAL SUPPORT IN A SPIRITUAL COMMUNITY Publication No. ______ La Dorna McGee, M.A. The University of Texas at Arlington, 2005 Supervising Professor: Frank Weed Paganism is a loosely organized community whose religious ideology incorporates the immanence of Deity. As a religious association with an ideology different from traditional Judeo-Christian faiths, members are often labeled as deviant and subjected to various negative sanctions. By relying on survey data collected on April 9-12, 1996 and in depth personal interviews collected on October 10-13, 1996, this study presents a model that best describes and explains acceptance and participation in Pagan spiritualism. This study identifies three characteristics associated with positive ratings of childhood religious affiliation (church disaffection, family closeness, and iv membership role), three characteristics associated with feelings of belonging to the Pagan community (church disaffection, social support, and participation), and finally examines a member’s disclosure of their Pagan identity as being a function of occupational prestige, weighing the costs of negative sanctions versus the Pagan value of openly expressing a Pagan identity, and self-efficacy. -

Dixon. 1988. Salem House Publishers: Topsfield, 1988, 120 pp. T6 many of us the fact that dinosaurs are no.longer around is a supreme frustration - we would give anything to see them. I have come across a few dinosaurologists who prefer dinosaurs as a case of detective work rather than field ~ork~ ~o them I say "tisk-tisk". Others note that had dinosaurs not gone extinct'w~ would not be around to see them anyway, and to them I say "details, details"! D. Dixon is one of the discontented, and in The New Dinosaurs - An Alternative Evolution he explores how dinosaurs migl1thave evolved if they, and some other Mesozoic creatures, not bought the farm circa 65 Myr ago. This book is patterned after his look at what may befall Earth's future fauna in After Man - ! Zoology £i the Future. In his forward for the new volume D. Morris says that Dixon's modern dino- saurs left him "rarely disappointed". I am afraid that I was disap- pointed more often. Indeed, I found The New Dinosaurs to be persistently frustrating, to an extent beyond whatI can detail· in this review. Dixon claims t6at his dinosaurian extrapolaiions are based on evolutionary princi- ples, yet he came up with a menagerie of creatures that have little to do with the real dinosaurs of the Mesozoic, and are often wholly implausible. -

J. N. S. PG College, Shujalpur (M.P.) Abstract The Silk Road was an interconnected series of routes through Southern Asia traversed by caravans and ocean vessels, and connecting Chang’an (present Xi’an), China, with Antioch, Syria, as well as other countries. Its influence carried over into Korea and Japan. These exchanges were critical not only for the development and flowering of the great civilizations of Ancient Egypt, China, India and Rome but also laid the foundations of our modern world. Malik Mohammad Jaisi, the poet of Hindi in his work Padmavat describes Alauddin Khilji with Central Asian horses. In the middle Ages, especially under the Mughals a regular flow of trade through the overland caravan routes was established. During the reign of Akbar two caravan routes to Central Asia were in usage, one from Lahore to Kabul and the other from Multan to Kandhar, whereas Bukhara, Samarkand, Khiva and Merv were important centres of trade in Central Asia, and Peshawar, Shikarpur, and Multan functioned as important trade marts in India. The ancient Silk Road was once unsurpassed in the trade it took across continents, the cultures that were linked by the camel caravans and donkey who wended their way through its dust. Nowadays, as the old thoroughfare falls into poor condition and forgetfulness, regions along it are also suffering. -

PAGANISM A brief overview of the history of Paganism The term Pagan comes from the Latin paganus which refers to those who lived in the country. When Christianity began to grow in the Roman Empire, it did so at first primarily in the cities. The people who lived in the country and who continued to believe in “the old ways” came to be known as pagans. Pagans have been broadly defined as anyone involved in any religious act, practice, or ceremony which is not Christian. Jews and Muslims also use the term to refer to anyone outside their religion. Some define paganism as a religion outside of Christianity, Judaism, Hinduism, Islam, and Buddhism; others simply define it as being without a religion. Paganism, however, often is not identified as a traditional religion per se because it does not have any official doctrine; however, it has some common characteristics within its variety of traditions. One of the common beliefs is the divine presence in nature and the reverence for the natural order in life. In the strictest sense, paganism refers to the authentic religions of ancient Greece and Rome and the surrounding areas. The pagans usually had a polytheistic belief in many gods but only one, which represents the chief god and supreme godhead, is chosen to worship. The Renaissance of the 1500s reintroduced the ancient Greek concepts of Paganism. Pagan symbols and traditions entered European art, music, literature, and ethics. The Reformation of the 1600s, however, put a temporary halt to Pagan thinking. Greek and Roman classics, with their focus on Paganism, were accepted again during the Enlightenment of the 1700s. -

Tall Timbers Research Station As I review the past six Annual Tall Timbers Fire Ecology Conferences, the 77 very competent papers presented, representing a diversity of disciplines from a large segment of the globe and the many stimulating, inspiring and mind-searching dis cussions generated thereby, I am reminded of the following statement from Dobzhansky's Mankind Evolving (1962): Science is cumulative knowledge. This makes scientific theories relatively impermanent, especially during the epochs when knowl edge piles up something like geometric progression. Scientists should be conscious of the provisional and transient nature of their attainments. Any scientist worth his salt labors to bring about the obsolescence of his own work. Certainly our efforts have added to "cumulative knowledge" in "something like geometric progression." Many of our ideas have grown, changed and continue to evolve, and we all labor to bring about the obsolescence of our own work. Dobzhansky states additionally: Two rival trends vie constantly for influence in science-spe cialization and synthesis. The former usually predominates.
