Welcome from the President ELCOME TO THE 29TH ANNUAL Great Taste of the Midwest. At a time when we probably should be over- whelmed by the explosive growth of the craft beer industry, we are too busy trying to figure Wout how to make this event a better experience for all. To that end, we are excited that we have maintained the same foot- print as we’ve had in past years, but have added more brewer space, by moving our merch tents and adding a few new tents to a previously restricted staff only area of the park (inside the “loop road”). This allows us bring in some new brewers while continuing to bring back the brewers that you come to expect to see at the Great Taste of the Midwest. I would like to thank Great Taste Chairman, Mark Garthwaite and the multitude of volunteers that make this event happen. We are all very proud that this is the only event of this size that is run by a 100% volunteer effort. Their passion for beer is a large part of what makes a volunteer effort of this size a success. I would also like to thank all of the Brewers that come to the Great Taste of the Midwest. All of “our” passion for beer flows from their passion. As the event has grown and produced more return Brewers each year, we’ve come to think of the Brewers as family coming home every year on the second Saturday in August. Sadly, I have to acknowledge the passing of several MHTG members since the last Great Taste.

REVIVING HISTORICAL BREWS At 7,000 years old, beer is one of the oldest fermented beverages on the planet. Even the most casual craft beer drinker is aware of the huge variety of beer styles available today, and there seems to be a 'new' style or two added to the fold every few months. A few historical beers that are taking notice • Liège Saison • Teguino • Grisette de Saison • Froach • Lichtenhainer • Sahti • Gratzer/Grotziskie • Roggenbier • Kyut • Gose Some of these old styles inspire quite a bit of creativity, especially those styles that originated before hops Gruits Recipes for modern Gruits typically follow their medieval ancestors' example in avoiding hops and using a variety of herbs in their stead Fraoch Heather Ale is perhaps the most readily-available commercial example. Fraoch(Heather Ale) • Pronounced: Fray-ock • Brewed in Scotland since 2000 B.C. • Heather ale is probably the oldest style of ale still produced in the world. From an ancient Gaelic recipe for “Leann Fraoch" (heather ale) it has been revived and reintroduced to the Scottish culture. The basic ingredients are mashed malted barley, sweet gale and flowering heather tips. In our world, heather ale (or Fraoch, the gaelic word for “heather”) was enjoyed by the ancient Picts in what is now Scotland. With various conquests and later laws, the original recipes for Fraoch were lost. However, starting in the early 1500s, accounts of making ale with heather began to surface again. WILLIAMS BROS FRAOCH HEATHER ALE The original 17th century Tripel Karmeliet recipe • Tripel Karmeliet is one of Belgium’s most famous beers.

DRAFT CREATURE COMFORTS / CLASSIC CITY LAGER ..................................................................................................................... 3/5 Pale Lager / 4.2% ABV / 20 IBU 5oz • 12oz Good Cold Beer. MODERN TIMES / ABADDON ...................................................................................................................................................... 3/5 Helles Lager / 5.5% ABV / 28 IBU 5oz • 12oz Our brewers in Portland got together with our homies at Wayfinder Beer to create this stellar Helles. Naturally carbonated through a method called "spunding," this lager is beautifully bright and effervescent, with subtle hints of toasted bread and honey. Ridiculously drinkable and balanced, Abaddon was brewed with German malts and hopped with Perle abd Hallertau Mittlefruh to give it an expressive take on a traditional style. BURIAL / HELLSTAR ........................................................................................................................................................................ 3/5 Dunkel Lager / 4.8% ABV / 18 IBU 5oz • 16oz Cast into the clutches of eternal damnation. And crucified by all the noise. It’s dark lager. You need to have it but you don’t know it yet. You're infested with deceit. Someone told you that all black beer is heavy. Well that's just stupid. Oh we're as heavy as the chains of Hell. But this beer ain't. Open your heart to evil. Sip on the depths of our black souls. OTHER HALF / DDH MYLAR BAGS ......................................................................................................................................
