The Online Journal of Communication and Media – April 2015 Volume 1, Issue 2 INCREASING CONTRIBUTION OF NEWS PHOTO AGENCIES INTO JOURNALISM BY EVOLVING TECHNOLOGY Assist.Prof. Dr. Kerim KARAGÖZ1, Prof.Dr. Özer KANBUROĞLU2 1,2Kocaeli University, Turkey [email protected],[email protected] Abstract:The publication of news photos in the journals directly begun in the beginning of 20th Century although news photos had emerged as a profession in the last quarter of 19th century. At the same time, the photos taken immediately distributed among and used in different media organs. In the beginning, the news were distributed by using a specific technique in the emerging agencies, before the photos. The economic reasons were determining factors at establishment of the news agencies in different European countries and in Northern America. Before that, hand-written commercial news letters were disseminated by copying them again by hand-writing. The qualified news coming on time in commercial and capitalist system became important as much as production. Thus, the new circles and groups emerged which were ready to pay for reaching quickly to news. When those increased in numbers, it was realized that the dissemination of news to large areas could be a profitable job. Consequently, the ‘news agencies’ as institutions emerged as a response to a rising need. Today, the news agencies with specific responsibilities in the global communication network just transmit the news and visual material. But some agencies only work on the photos. These agencies transmit photos to all news centers in a short time by connecting with a contracted photographer in that region, or in a region close to the event. -

Steve McCurry ’74 Steve McCurry is quite simply one of the finest, most highly regarded photographers in the world. He graduated from the College of Arts and Architecture with a B.A. cum laude in cinematography, whereupon he joined a newspaper. After two years he set out for India to freelance and begin his career in earnest. Spending the majority of his time in Southeast Asia, McCurry supported himself through his freelance work for a number of years. However, it was his photographs of rebel-controlled Afghanistan just before the Russian invasion in the 1980s that brought him to world attention. Disguised in native garb and pretending to be mute, McCurry crossed the Pakistan border into Afghanistan to emerge into safety later with rolls of film sewn into his clothes—film that, because it contained compelling images that were among the first of the conflict, was quickly published worldwide. His coverage won the Robert Capa Gold Medal for Best Photographic Reporting from Abroad—an award dedicated to photographers exhibiting exceptional courage and enterprise. Since then, McCurry has covered many areas of international and civil conflict, including Beirut, Cambodia, the Philippines, the Gulf War, the Iran-Iraq war, and the disintegration of the former Yugoslavia. McCurry’s images of the devastation of the World Trade Center in 2001 are considered standouts in the documentation of that attack. Says McCurry, “Most of my photos are grounded in people. I look for the unguarded moment, the essential soul peeking out, experience etched on a person’s face. I try to convey what it is like to be that person—a person caught in a broader landscape that I guess you’d call the human condition.” Throughout his career he has put himself at risk to record images of every major conflict of the last twenty years: he has been arrested and chained in Pakistan, survived a plane crash in Yugoslavia, was beaten and nearly drowned in India by crowds at a religious festival, and was nearly killed by a Mujahadeen faction. -

Le Monde went to visit him and retraces the journey which led him from the gangs of London to his fame. Batcombe, Somerset (UK) - Special correspondents The photographer closes the door of his darkroom – the room of his “ghosts.” It is from there which they emerge, the “ghosts,” from a prefabricated cabin behind the house. They come from four immaculate white bins – developer, bath, fiXer and wash. Beside these are the enlargers, and on shelves there are reams of paper, all of which float in a putrid smell of potassium iodide. “You know that almost everything happens here, in this darkroom,” says Donald McCullin: siXty years of photography of which eighteen were devoted to war. “Soon, I’m going to get rid of all of it. I am at the end of my journey.” It is hard to believe. This man risked a thousand deaths in wars. In 2016 again, he was in Iraq. He was injured in Cambodia, beaten up in prisons in Idi Amin Dada. A price was put on his head in Lebanon. In PalmyrA, Syria, only two years ago, his lung was pierced from a fall. “I paid a good price,” he says, but in half a century of reportage in the form of ‘eXtreme journalism’, McCullin was never K.O.
