Le monde celtique est né autour de Hallstatt, en Autriche, vers le dixième siècle avant notre ère. Au premier siècle, il s’étend depuis la Galatie dans l’actuelle Turquie, jusqu’en Irlande et en Espagne. Il borde alors l’Empire romain, au nord. Les contrées suivantes en font alors partie : la Galatie, la Bithynie, la Thrace, la Mésie inférieure, la Dacie, l’Illyrie, la Dalmatie, la Pannonie, la Norique, la Rhétie, la Gaule Cisalpine, la Gaule Transalpine, l’Espagne Celtibère, la Bretagne, l’Irlande. 1 : Carte : Formation de l’Empire romain. (Atlas historique). Les Celtes sont un peuple de paysans et d’artisans. Ils ont domestiqué le cheval. Ils ont inventé la métallurgie du fer. Ils forgent l’or, le cuivre, le bronze et le fer. L’art celtique est florissant. Ceux qui vivent près des côtes fabriquent des navires et naviguent sur les mers et océans. Ils sont acteurs du commerce, entre la Méditerranée et l’Atlantique, commerce des minerais, du sel, du bois, des céréales, des vêtements, de l’huile, du vin, entre autres.. Cependant la population vit dispersée. Pas d’agglomération importante dans ces « Celties ». Les fermes de cette époque (l’âge du fer) sont isolées. Les regroupements ne se font qu’autour de gués, de marchés, de points d’eau permanents et ne sont dotés que de quelques habitations : moins de dix certainement. British · Christianity during the Roman Occupation THE object of this paper is to present an intelligible idea of Christianity in Britain during the Roman occupation; that is to say (speaking. roughly), during the first four centuries of th.e Christian era. The endeavour will be made to disentangle from a mass of legend, which Celtic patriotism or controversial zeal has hugged, the meagre scraps of real history for which we are indebted to foreign rather than to native historians. A bitter wail has reverberated from the first to the last of the writers of our soil, from the British Gildas of the sixth century to Professor Bright of to-day, that native contemporary records are non-existent, that the first planting of the faith is unknown.1 1 A really exhaustive study might take some such form as- Direct. Traditional-Folk-lore. 4 BRITISH CHRISTIANITY The plan here adopted is, to begin with the earliest available evidence of the settled condition of the British Church, namely, the, presence of three British bishops at the Synod of Arles (A.D.314).1 This will serve as a chronological point d'appui from which to proceed, first onward to the end of the proposed period, and then backward, till we arrive at the vanishing point of anything like British history, which we believe to be coin cident with the origin of British Christianity. -

1 AN INTRODUCTORY HISTORY OF THE ORTHODOX CHURCH IN BRITAIN AND IRELAND From its Beginnings to the Eleventh Century By Aidan Hart PART I (until 600 AD) “In all parts of Spain, among the diverse nations of the Gauls, in regions of the Britons beyond Roman sway but subjected to Christ... the name of Christ now reigns.” (Tertullian in “Adversus Judaeos” Ch. 7, circa 200 AD) Introduction There is a saying on Mount Athos that it is not where we live that saves us but the way we live. This is a play on the Greek words topos and tropos . One could add that neither is it when we live that saves us. And yet on reading the lives of saints who lived in other epochs and other lands it is easy to feel that it is impossible for us, in our circumstances, to approach their level of repentance and humility. This is one reason why many British and other English speakers are being attracted to the saints of the British Isles: although these saints lived over a millennium ago they lived on our own soil, or at least on that of our ancestors. It is as though these local saints are not only supporting us from heaven, but are also with us here, on the same soil where they once struggled in the spiritual life. How eagerly the saints of Britain must await our prayers that the land in which they so mightily laboured should again become a garden of virtue! It is difficult to be inspired by saints about whom we know little. -

1 CHRISTIAN CHURCH ORIGINS IN BRITAIN by Laurence Gardner [Including primary reference sources] Introduction It is generally promoted by the Christian churches that the formalized religion based on the model of Jesus emerged from the teachings of Peter and Paul in Rome, but there is nothing in the Vatican Archive, nor in any historical record, to substantiate this premise. The New Testament Acts of the Apostles relate that, following two years of confinement in Caesarea on a charge of incitement, St Paul was taken under guard to Rome in the year AD 60.1 He was placed under house arrest prior to his appearance before the Senate tribunal, and then imprisoned in AD 62. Following that event, there is no further record of his life, and it is reckoned that he met his end in the mass slaughter of Christians by Emperor Nero in AD 64. Paul’s erstwhile colleague, the apostle St Peter, is not referenced in the Bible or in any other document subsequent to his imprisonment in Jerusalem,2 from where he escaped to Antioch, Syria, in AD 44. But without any supporting evidence, Church tradition has claimed from the 4th century that Peter also went to Rome, where he became the first leader of Christians in the city and was martyred along with Paul. In contrast, however, the Church’s own Apostolic Constitutions actually cite another man as the first Christian leader. Writing in AD 180, Bishop Irenaeus of Lyon in Gaul stated that the first ministry of the Christians in Rome was committed to the supervision of a certain Linus. -

Patrick’s letter, as I will try to show, contains information which is not otherwise available on these crucial years. Moreover —and on occasions in comparison with the Confessio— the value of the Epistola in relation to these events has increased. The themes and historical figures discussed in the Epistola have proved to be fundamental to an understanding of the historical, social and religious causes both of the end of Roman power in Britain and the sudden rise of the apostolic missions especially in Ireland and in the rest of the Post-Roman Britain, as well as in less Romanised areas as a result of Nynias’s and Columba’s preaching and by means of the definitive action of the Roman Church in sending Augustine of Canterbury to Britain. The site of the Roman city at Silchester has been visited more than once by the Hants Field Club, but some notice of its situation and history has been deemed necessary to accompany our illustration, which shows, perhaps, the most important and' interesting result brought to light by recent excavations. ..••••. •' Situated within the borders of our county, about three miles from Mortimer station, on the Basingstoke and Reading Railway, Silchester • has been called the "Pompeii" of Hampshire. Its walls, io-ft. thick, in places 21-ft. high, and 2,670'yards in .circuit, enclose an area of 102 acres (about' two-thirds that of Pompeii). Its irregular outline, a sort of heptagon,'unlike the rectangular plan usually adopted by the Romans; has; led to the idea that the site was originally a Celtic settlement, probably of the Segontiaci,1 who inhabited Hants, and were conquered by the Attrebates dwellers on the banks of the Thames, who named their settlement or oppidum CALLEVA2 ATTREBATUM, which name was retained by the Romans, and theplace is now identified as the CALLEVA of their Itineraries. Silchester. (the Castle in the Wood) has come down to us from Anglo-Saxon times. The Roman city occupied an important position, standing at the point of junction of main roads leading, to Londinium by Pontes 1 Nennius includes Cair Segeint in his list of thirty-three cities in the island of Britain: : * In connection with the Celtic occupation of Silchester, coins inscribed CALLE and SEGO are known. -
