St. Catholic School ANNUAL REPORT

Nutures the formation of and Scholars St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School strives to develop the Catholic faith, demonstrate Christian living, commit to student learning, and foster good stewardship of God’s world. It does not matter where you come from or what you have experienced, gratitude can be held by any heart, at any age. We feel profound amounts of gratitude for your blessings and friendship! On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your continued generosity to the Annual Fund, Endowment, G.R.A.C.E. Scholars, and various other scholarships. In fact, more than six hundred people made a gift to St. Jude School this year. Thank you!

This year’s Annual Fund was a huge success! I consider that the success lies not only in the amount raised but also in the number of donors supporting the effort. I am delighted to report that 100% of our parents, faculty, and staff supported the Annual Fund!

As stewards of this school, we embrace the enormous responsibility of providing our students with a first-rate academic, spiritual, and physical environment that will prepare them for life. We can only succeed at such a lofty undertaking with your continued financial support.

One of our greatest assets is our volunteers; they make such a difference in the lives of our children. From selling cookies and magazines to monitoring lunch and recess, volunteers provide countless (and tireless) hours to make our school better. Volunteers are a critical part of our future success. I am humbled by our volunteers’ generous spirit and dedication to St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School.

I wish to thank the P.T.A. for their generous support in time, talent, and treasure. This year, by any form of measure, was extremely successful! I have found that no has ever been too big or too small for the St. Jude P.T.A. This year’s gifts included Google Expeditions: Tools for Tomorrow, and enhancements to the SJA News Room.

St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School has made a difference in our community for the past fifty-four years. Whether you have benefitted directly from our school as students, parents, or grandparents, or if you experienced parish-based Catholic education elsewhere, your belief and support in Catholic education enables us to continue to provide for our children a high-quality education rooted in Catholic foundation and traditions.

We are grateful for your role in allowing us to carry out our mission. Your dedication, support, and commitment are the true embodiment of Christ’s spirit alive in our midst.

I encourage you to review the Giving Opportunities listed on the following pages. JUDE SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 5 MONTE CARLO 2017

Monte Carlo 2017 was definitely a night to remember! The law offices of Nelson Mullins, overlooking downtown Atlanta, provided a stunning venue for our bi-annual casino style event benefitting the St. Jude School Endowment Fund. Thanks to the generosity of sponsors, parents, and friends, we raised over $22,000 - the most ever! Guests enjoyed a wonderful evening complete with great food, signature cocktails, and fun casino games along with fantastic prizes. The Reverse Raffle is always a highlight of this event, and this year was no exception. St. Jude School parents Casey and Rem Reynolds, and the family of assistant principal Josette Perez, split the grand prize of $5000!

Thank You! We are especially grateful to our Monte Carlo committee: Tara Barnett, Debbie and Larry Molnar, Sindy Scholze, Kim and Mike Yates, and Liane York. Their time and efforts provided amazing food, beautiful décor, and exciting prizes! Thanks to the tremendous dedication of our parents, everyone who attended, our family and community sponsors, and everyone who purchased raffle tickets - Monte Carlo Night 2017 was a grand success!

ST. JUDE SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 7 SEESAW...This past fall saw the launch of some new technology integration strategies with both teachers and students. Sever- al of the teachers attended a training session last summer, enabling them to provide professional development to the faculty so that all were “up to speed” with our new apps when the school year began.

Teachers learned how to utilize the SeeSaw app, allowing for the creation of online portfolios of students’ work documented with pictures, videos, notes, and drawings. The app empowered students to independently explain their thought process and served as a way to “show off” what they learned in school. Additionally, SeeSaw helped teachers with organization and parent communication, simplified formative assessment, and taught students additional 21st century technology skills. Some of the applications included filming roller coaster creations in 4th grade to complement their study of force and motion.

SPELLING BEE...Once again, Roscoe Hutcheson proved to be the top speller at St. Jude by claiming first place in our school bee! After advancing in three subsequent bees, he took 4th place in the Georgia Independent School Association’s (GISA) Regional Bee!

RETREATS...A highlight for many of our middle school students is the overnight retreat where we combine team building, spiritual formation, and social development all in one fabulous trip! These retreats create mem- ories that remain with our students for a lifetime, and help shape them into true “saints and scholars.”

8 Bless our school and teachers, and listen to our prayer FUTURE CITY...After taking first place in the state Future City competition, we once again were proud to send a St. Jude team to Washington DC to represent Georgia in the World Finals.

Future City queries middle school students to create a solution to a citywide sustainability issue, thus making the world a better place. This year’s theme, “The Power of Public Spaces,” challenged the students to design innovative, multi-use public spaces to serve a city’s diverse population. (A study by the UN-Habitat’s Global Urban Observatories Unit found that cities with about 50% of their space devoted to public use tend to be more prosperous and have a higher quality of life). At the competition, the teams presented their vision of the future through a virtual city design (using SimCity™ software), a 1500 word essay, a scale model of their city (built with recycled materials), and a short oral presentation to a panel of STEM professionals.

St. Jude’s winning team, “Care City,” was comprised of sixth graders Katie Brandt Braswell, Madelyn Cowan, and Annamarie ValeCruz, and was under the guidance of mentor Matt Cowan and faculty STEM advisor Eleonora Straub. In addition to placing first in the state competition, “Care City” received the “Accessible City” and “Most Innovative Construction Techniques” awards.

ST. JUDE SCHOOL ANNUAL REPORT 2016/2017 9 ST. JUDE SCHOOL SERVING OUR COMMUNITY

Service to others is an integral part of our Catholic faith. Pope Francis has asked us as individuals and as a Church “to be a witness of mercy” by reflecting on and practicing the spiritual and corporal works of mercy. Through our service projects, our students do exactly that, not only during this Year of Mercy, but every year.

The faculty and staff kicked off this year’s campaign by reaching 100% participation for the third year in a row by the 4th week of school. The parent’s annual giving campaign kicked off with our Chastain Night event on September 17th. All Annual Fund gifts have an enormous impact on St. Jude’s ability to enhance standards of excellence in teaching, student development, and facilities. Your annual gifts fuel the success of our Blue Ribbon school and touch every aspect of our students’ experience. We are extremely fortunate to have the commitment and involvement of so many caring supporters who give their time and resources to make St. Jude an outstanding Catholic school.

We are grateful to them and their Class Representatives who led the charge of our successful campaign. We also wish to thank all our parents, parishioners, alumni, faculty and staff, former parents, former faculty and staff, grandparents, and friends who support this initiative with amazing dedication! A commitment to Catholic education for your family is an outward sign of your commitment to living the life of a good steward of the gifts God has given to you. Keeping the faith alive for our youth by weaving it into every aspect of their school experience will forever impact them.

Our school is strong because of parents, grandparents, and friends, like you, who believe in the value of Catholic education. I want to take this time to thank you for your dedication to St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School and to your family’s continued faith development.

We continue to be blessed with the expertise, knowledge, and professionalism of our award-winning school principal, Mrs. Childs, as well as our very talented teachers and administrators. Mrs. Childs, along with all who serve here, works diligently to provide a top quality Catholic curriculum to develop your “saints and scholars.”

May our patron , Saint Jude, guide and protect you and your family always.
