For ease of indexing we have given them a letter designation. The books included in this first installment include: Notes: Date given is death date if know, otherwise it might be burial date, date plot was purchased or date at the top of the page. In the case of removals from one cemtery to another the date is given in the notes column to avoid confusion over death dates. In the case of stillbirths and infants, the name given might be that of a parent, the records were often not clear. Remember, this is an index not an extraction, the actual record is likely to contain additional information, including who is responsible for payment, some societies the individual belonged to, names of newspapers where notices were places, and in some journals prior to 1920 obituaries might be attached. There is some duplication in the records, some of the Journal were most likely copied to the later books. We chose to include both because these were the years that might also have attached obituaries. When requesting a copy from the Colma Historical Society, be sure to copy the book volume and page number carefully.

Between 1930 and 1940 the population increased by nearly 50% from 77400 in 1930 to 111800 in 1940. New cities formed as the population grew including the incorporation of Belmont, Menlo Park and Woodside in 1927. Increasing transportation needs were answered by the opening of Mills Field (San Francisco Airport) in 1927 and the building of the San Mateo Hayward Bridge in 1929. The Great Depression was one of the reasons for an increase in population. Whereas previously immigrants might be likely to settle in San Francisco neighborhoods, now the lack of jobs and high rents led them to relocate to the peninsula. With much of the county still unincorporated it was still possible to find a strip of land and put up an inexpensive dwelling.

It does not matter where you come from or what you have experienced, gratitude can be held by any heart, at any age. We feel profound amounts of gratitude for your blessings and friendship! On behalf of the students, faculty, and staff of St. Jude the Apostle Catholic School, I wish to express our sincere appreciation for your continued generosity to the Annual Fund, Endowment, G.R.A.C.E. Scholars, and various other scholarships. In fact, more than six hundred people made a gift to St. Jude School this year. Thank you! This year’s Annual Fund was a huge success! I consider that the success lies not only in the amount raised but also in the number of donors supporting the effort. I am delighted to report that 100% of our parents, faculty, and staff supported the Annual Fund! As stewards of this school, we embrace the enormous responsibility of providing our students with a first-rate academic, spiritual, and physical environment that will prepare them for life. We can only succeed at such a lofty undertaking with your continued financial support. One of our greatest assets is our volunteers; they make such a difference in the lives of our children. From selling cookies and magazines to monitoring lunch and recess, volunteers provide countless (and tireless) hours to make our school better.
