Im Westen der Ostfriesischen Inseln liegt die Insel Juist. Von Westen aus gezählt, ist die Juist die zweite Insel. Weiter westlicher liegt nur noch die Insel Borkum. Der dort ca. 3,5 km breite Gezeitenstrom Osterems stellte das größte Hindernis dar, um von Juist hinüber nach Borkum zu kommen. Vorsicht, schon bei Windstille ist dort mit einer max. Stromgeschwindigkeit von 4,8-5,6 km/h zu rechnen, die bei Springtide noch um 10% höher sein kann. Zusätzlich liegt südlich bis südwestlich von Juist noch ein ca. 5 km tiefes Watt mit der Vogelschutzinsel Memmert. Es ist als „Vogelschutzgebiet“ ausgezeichnet und muss zwischen 1.04.-1.10. umfahren werden. Der östlich Nachbar von Juist ist Norderney. Ein ca. 3,5 km breites Gat, in dem der einlau- fende Strom ohne Einfluss des Windes max. 3,3 – 4,1 km/h schnell strömen kann. Die Insel Juist kann angefahren werden: · vom Festland aus angefahren werden (i.d.R. Norddeich (Hafen) = ca. 13 km), Pil- sumer Watt = ca. 27 km , Knock = ca. 41 km) · oder von den benachbarten Inseln (Borkum = ca. 25 km, Norderney = ca.

    Die Küste, 84 (2016), 95-118 Sedimentologische Untersuchungen auf den Halligen Volker Karius, Malte Schindler, Matthias Deicke und Hilmar von Eynatten Zusammenfassung Die nordfriesischen Halligen und niedrige Bereiche der ostfriesischen Inselmarschen ste- hen vor der Herausforderung steigender Wasserstände (relative mean sea level, RMSL, mean tidal high water, MThw, highest tidal high water, HThw). Quantitative Aussagen über das natürliche Anpassungspotential der regelmäßig überfluteten Bereiche zu treffen war das Ziel des Teilprojektes D (03KIS095) im Verbundprojekt „ZukunftHallig“ (JENSEN et al. 2016). Mittlere Sedimentaufwuchsraten im Zeitraum 1986–2011 belaufen sich auf 1.4±0.6 mm/a (Hooge), 1.6±0.7 mm/a (Langeneß) und 3.2±1.6 mm/a (Nord- strandischmoor). Auf den ostfriesischen Inseln wurden im Zeitraum 2011-2013 mittlere Raten von 2.4±1.0 mm/a (Norderney, östlicher Grohdepolder) und 0.75±0.25 mm/a (Juist, südlicher Billpolder) gemessen. Dem steht ein Anstieg des RMSL gegenüber, der derzeit 2.6 mm/a (Pegel Wyk auf Föhr) beträgt bzw. ein Anstieg des MThw von 5.0 mm/a (Pegel Wyk auf Föhr). Durch die Diskrepanz zwischen Höhenentwicklung der Halligmarschen und der Wasserstandsentwicklung resultieren steigende hydrodynamische Belastungen auf die Marschen und die Warften. Diese bestehen aus höheren Wasserstän- den während eines Landunters sowie einem potentiell höheren Wellengang. Die Sedi- mentakkumulation auf den Halligen Hooge und Langeneß wird maßgeblich von der An- zahl an Sturmfluten gesteuert, die eine Höhe von 1.54 m über MThw überschreiten. Die Hallig Nordstrandischmoor profitiert dagegen auch von Überflutungen mit geringeren Wasserständen. Sedimente werden auf Langeneß bevorzugt dicht hinter der Uferlinie ab- gelagert, auf Hooge liegen die Gebiete mit hoher Sedimentdeposition in der Nähe der Sieltore, während auf Nordstrandischmoor die Sedimente weitgehend gleichmäßig über die Fläche verteilt werden.

Niemeyer1, Hartmut Eiben2, Hans Rohde3 ABSTRACT: Coastal engineering in Germany has a long tradition basing on elementary requirements of coastal inhabitants for survival, safety of goods and earning of living. Initial purely empirical gained knowledge evolved into a system providing a technical and scientific basis for engineering measures. In respect of distinct geographical boundary conditions, coastal engineering at the North and the Baltic Sea coasts developed a fairly autonomous behavior as well in coastal protection and waterway and harbor engineering. Emphasis in this paper has been laid on highlighting those kinds of pioneering in German coastal engineering which delivered a basis that is still valuable for present work. INTRODUCTION The Roman historian Pliny visited the German North Sea coast in the middle of the first century A. D. He reported about a landscape being flooded twice within 24 hours which could be as well part of the sea as of the land. He was concerned about the inhabitants living on earth hills adjusted to the flood level by experience. Pliny must have visited this area after a severe storm surge during tides with a still remarkable set-up [WOEBCKEN 1924]. This is the first known document of human constructions called ‘Warft’ in Frisian (Fig. 1). If the coastal areas are flooded due to a storm surge, these hills remained Figure 1. The Wadden District, often described as an exclusively Dutch phytogeographical entity, was found to cover the whole area. From a comparison with the floras ofthe neighbouring Dune and Half District and the more distant Kempen District, it was concluded that the Wadden District forms a distinct unity by its relatively large internal cohesion. Within the Wadden District three groups of islands could be discerned: a western group including the Dutch islands and Borkum, a of islands of central group German and a northern group partly German, partly Danish islands. Nordstrand, Pellworm and Skallingen showed similaritieswith the last Texel usually only slight group. was clustered sometimes with the northern group. Ecological differentiationchiefly determines the presence or absence of species in the islands, and thus the degree of (dis)similarity of theirfloras and vegetation types. Juni 2007 Sehr geehrte Damen und Herren, die Städte Norden und Norderney, die Inselgemeinde Juist und die Gemeinde Baltrum planen mit der Unterstützung der GLL Aurich - Amt für Landentwicklung - und dem Landkreis Aurich die Durchführung eines Integrierten Ländlichen Entwicklungskonzeptes (ILEK). Das Entwicklungskonzept soll Ziele und Handlungsfelder benennen, die geeignet sind, die Region wirtschaftlich, touristisch und sozial, aber auch landwirtschaftlich weiterzuentwickeln und zu stabilisieren. Das ILEK ist keine von außen und von Fachleuten allein erarbeitete Planung. Sie basiert vielmehr auf der Mitarbeit möglichst vieler Bürgerinnen und Bürger sowie der Vereine, Verbände usw., indem beispielsweise Defizite benannt und gemeinsam mit allen Verantwortlichen Lösungsmöglich- keiten dafür erarbeitet werden. Der geplante ILEK-Prozess ist bedarfs- und umsetzungsorientiert, das bedeutet, dass nach der Konzepterstellung in einer mehrere Jahre dauernden Verwirklichungsphase gemeinsame Projekte umgesetzt werden sollen. Houben1 1BGR, Hannover, Germany ABSTRACT The Christmas Flood of 1717 was one of the most destructive storm floods in the North Sea region and affected large parts of the shores of Germany, the Netherlands and Germany (e.g. Jakubowski-Tiessen 1992). It occurred in the night from the 24th to the 25th of December 1717, when a strong northwesterly storm front pushed massive volumes of water into the funnel-shaped German Bight. Adding to the astronomical high tide occurring this night, water levels rose up to 4 m higher than the mean tidal high water mark. This lead to widespread overtopping and breaching of the dikes, which had been neglected in the preceding years due to extended periods of war and unrest. Since the event happened at night, the population was unable to react. About 9,000 people in Germany lost their lives and around 2,500 in the Netherlands. The small German town of Jever alone lost 1,700 people. In the village of Stollhamm, located on the peninsula of Butjadingen, which was exposed to the flood from two sides, 582 out of a population of 1,200 perished and only a third of the houses were not destroyed. In Eastern Frisia, 922 houses were completely destroyed and 1,672 damaged. In all of the affected regions in Germany, at least 3,000 houses were completely destroyed.
