A comparison of weather systems in 1870 and 1956 leading to extreme floods in the Murray Darling Basin Jeff Callaghan Retired Bureau of Meteorology Brisbane Queensland Australia. 10 October 2018. 1 ABSTRACT This research is the extension of a project studying the impact of Nineteenth Century severe weather events in Australia and their relation to similar events during the Twentieth and Twenty First Century. Two floods with the worst known impacts in the Murray Darling Basin are studied. One of these events which occurred during 1956 is relatively well known and Bureau of Meteorology archives contain good rainfall data covering the period. Additionally, information on the weather systems causing this rainfall can be obtained. Rainfall, flood and weather system data for this event are presented here and compared with a devastating event during 1870. Although archived Australian rainfall data is negligible during 1870 and there is no record of weather systems affecting Australia during that year, a realistic history of the floods and weather systems in the Murray Darling Basin during 1870 is created. This follows an extensive search through newspaper archives contained in the National Library of Australia’s web site. Examples are presented showing how the meteorological data in Nineteenth Century newspapers can be used to create weather charts. -

Helgren** *DepartmentofGeography and the Environment, University ofTexas at Austin **DepartmentofGeography, SanJose State University Forsoutheastern Australia, arrival of the First Fleet in 1788raises similar issues in environmental history as the 1492landing of Columbus in the Americas. But Anglo-Australian settlement isyounger and better documented, bothin termsof scientific proxy data and historical sources, which include data on stockingrates that generally werelight. Environmental concerns were voiced early, and a livelydebate continues both among professionals andthe lay public, with Australian geographers playing a major academic and applied role. This article addresses environmentaldegradation often attributed to earlypastoralism (and implicit clearance) in theTablelands of NewSouth Wales. Methods include: (1) comparisonofwell-reported travel itineraries of1817-1833 with mod- ernland cover and streamchannels; (2) criticalreviews of high-resolutionpollen profiles and theissues of Aboriginalvs. Anglo-Australian fireecology; and (3) identificationofsoil erosion and gullying both before and afterAnglo-Australian intrusion. The results indicate that (a) landcover of the Tablelands islittle changed since priorto Contact,although some species are less common, while invasive genera of legumes have modified the groundcover; (b) thecharcoal trace in pollen profiles prior to Contact supports an ecologicalimpact -

The Snowy River Echo is your only locally owned, pub- lished and printed magazine. We take pride in this and love supporting the community in any way we can. I had a phone call in early February from a resident in Berridale, the lady thought she had missed January’s edition. Explaining to me that she posts a copy each month to an old friend in New Zealand that used to work on the Snowy. I replied with joy now knowing that the magazine (if only one copy) gets to New Zea- land. As discussed with this regular reader, I mentioned that the magazine hasn’t been published in January before but as per the communities feedback we will as of next year publish 12 editions a year. The Monaro’s agriculture show season is upon us. So please support our local towns by attending or partic- ipating! I will be participating in a few of the horse events my self, feel free to come over and say hi! I took a drive to Buchan the other week, a little exploring down the Barry Way to the Mountain Cattlemen’s Get Together. Hosted by the Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria a great weekend was had by all and on pages 12 and 13 you have a read about some of the history and what went on. -

(2016) PhD Thesis, The University of Queensland Abstract Surface freshwater yield is a service provided by catchments, which cycle water intake by partitioning precipitation into evapotranspiration and streamflow. Streamflow generation is experiencing changes globally due to climate- and human-induced changes currently taking place in catchments. However, the direct attribution of streamflow changes to specific catchment modification processes is challenging because catchment functioning results from multiple interactions among distinct drivers (i.e., climate, soils, topography and vegetation). These drivers have coevolved until ecohydrological equilibrium is achieved between the water and energy fluxes. Therefore, the coevolution of catchment drivers and their spatial heterogeneity makes their functioning and response to changes unique and poses a challenge to expanding our ecohydrological knowledge. Addressing these problems is crucial to enabling sustainable water resource management and water supply for society and ecosystems. This thesis explores an extensive dataset of catchments situated along a climatic gradient in eastern Australia to understand the spatial and temporal variation
