A comparison of weather systems in 1870 and 1956 leading to extreme floods in the Murray Darling Basin Jeff Callaghan Retired Bureau of Meteorology Brisbane Queensland Australia. 10 October 2018. 1 ABSTRACT This research is the extension of a project studying the impact of Nineteenth Century severe weather events in Australia and their relation to similar events during the Twentieth and Twenty First Century. Two floods with the worst known impacts in the Murray Darling Basin are studied. One of these events which occurred during 1956 is relatively well known and Bureau of Meteorology archives contain good rainfall data covering the period. Additionally, information on the weather systems causing this rainfall can be obtained. Rainfall, flood and weather system data for this event are presented here and compared with a devastating event during 1870. Although archived Australian rainfall data is negligible during 1870 and there is no record of weather systems affecting Australia during that year, a realistic history of the floods and weather systems in the Murray Darling Basin during 1870 is created. This follows an extensive search through newspaper archives contained in the National Library of Australia’s web site. Examples are presented showing how the meteorological data in Nineteenth Century newspapers can be used to create weather charts. -

3.79 31 Field Notes on the Black Falcon By GEORGE W. BEDGGOOD, Lindenow South, Victoria, 3866. Because of the dearth of published records for Falco subniger in Victoria and southern New South Wales, I have summarised all my observations from 1955 to 1978. Wheeler ( 1967) lists it as "rather rare" but records it for all districts of Victoria. Although a bird of the drier inland plains, its nomadic wanderings may result in unexpected appearances outside its normal range. Factors affecting a regular food supply, such as drought, no doubt are responsible for such movements. Because its non-hunting flight is so "crow-like" it could easily be mistaken as "a corvid". The dark sooty-brown plumage which appears black, particularly when the bird is some distance from the observer, or when seen in silhouette, its similar size and general outline could all contribute to mistaken identification. When hunting, its flight is typically falcon-like, swift and calculated. Due to its size and lack of pattern in the plumage it ought not be confused with any other falcon. Between September 1955 and December 1956 I was able to record the species at Jindera, N.S.W., and in Victoria at Bonegilla and Corryong. The Jindera bird was my first experience with the Black Falcon. A farmer travelling in the car and knowing my interest in birds remarked that a pair had been seen frequently in the district. Approaching Jindera we flushed a bird from a telephone post. The farmer immediately identified it as a Black Falcon. It flapped and glided to a windbreak some distance away, its flight no different to that of the many corvids we had passed since leaving Albury. -

This research was funded by Austroads (representing federal, state and territory road agencies, local government and the New Zealand road agency) to promote improved practice and capability for the road agencies. The LTPP monitoring program measured performance by rutting, roughness, cracking and deflection. Initially the program involved a range of designated flexible pavement sites under varying conditions of environment and traffic. Many of these LTPP sites were included in the Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) of the United States (US). All sites were monitored in accordance with the SHRP protocols. Later long-term pavement performance maintenance (LTPPM) sites were included in the program to: (i) assess the impact of surface maintenance treatments on changes to pavement conditions (works effects, WE); and, (ii) assess the impact of maintenance on road deterioration (RD). A range of RD and WE models were developed using the LTPP/LTPPM observational data in combination with experimental data collected from Australia's Accelerated Loading Facility (ALF) that separately investigated the impact on RD of increased axle load and various typical surface maintenance treatments. The RD models cover the deterministic prediction of functional surface distress (rutting, roughness and cracking) and the loss of traffic load capacity (strength). -
