INTRODUCTION One of the missions of The Friends of Valley Forge Park is the promotion of our historical heritage so that the spirit of what took place over two hundred years ago continues to inspire both current and future generations of all people. It is with great pleasure and satisfaction that we are able to offer to the public this chronology of events of The American Revolution. While a simple listing of facts, it is the hope that it will instill in some the desire to dig a little deeper into the fascinating stories underlying the events presented. The following pages were compiled over a three year period with text taken from many sources, including the internet, reference books, tapes and many other available resources. A bibliography of source material is listed at the end of the book. This publication is the result of the dedication, time and effort of Mr. Frank Resavy, a long time volunteer at Valley Forge National Historical Park and a member of The Friends of Valley Forge Park. As with most efforts of this magnitude, a little help from friends is invaluable. The Magazine Williamsburg Chapter Virginia Society Sons of the American Revolution By signing the Declaration of Independence, the fifty-six Americans pledged their lives, fortunes, and sacred honor. Nine died of wounds during the Revolutionary War, Five were captured or imprisoned. Wives and children were jailed, mistreated, or left penniless. Twelve signers’ houses were burned to the ground. No signer defected. Their honor, like their nation remained intact. Vol. XXVI I am happy to announce that based on the member survey regarding the resumption of in-person meetings, your Board of Managers has agreed that we will hold our May 8 luncheon meeting in-person at the Fords Colony Club. To ensure the safety of all members and to meet current guidelines, the following ground rules will be in effect: 1. Members must be masked when entering and exiting the facility and until the meal is served. 2. A maximum of six members will be seated at a table that normally holds 10. 3. All servers will be masked. 4. Members must RSVP and pay by check in advance. 5. Meeting attendance will be capped at 50. Payment at the door will not be allowed. We hope you will take the opportunity to enjoy a fine meal, get reacquainted with your fellow compatriots and listen to our fine speaker. Given the 50-person limit, please send in your RSVP and checks promptly. Details follow in the newsletter. Our April speaker was member Gary Dunaway, who discussed the Nelson Family and provided some very interesting little-known facts about the family and the house. -

You are advised to consult the publisher’s version if you wish to cite from it. http://eprints.gla.ac.uk/184557/ Deposited on: 03 October 2020 Enlighten – Research publications by members of the University of Glasgow http://eprints.gla.ac.uk John Paul Jones and the Curse of Home There were at least two versions of a chapbook titled History of Paul Jones, the Pirate circulating in nineteenth-century Britain, part of a body of literature on this sea captain, an international sensation and source of domestic mythology even before his death in Paris in 1792.1 John Paul, or Paul Jones as he became known, was as these chapbooks tell it, “of a wild and ardent disposition,” well-suited to “a sea-faring life.” “Prompted partly by a spirit of revenge, and partly by the prospect of plunder,” Jones would eventually “desert his national standard” and, using “his complete knowledge of the northern coasts of Great Britain,” mount a series of “marauding schemes” on behalf of the Revolutionary United States. Returning to his “native place” in April 1778, not only did Jones attack the town of Whitehaven on the English side of the Solway, where he had trained as a young mariner, but he also made a “warlike” appearance at St. Mary’s Isle in Kirkcudbrightshire, looking to take the Earl of Selkirk hostage. -

Event Rangers, family members and friends started arriving Wednesday at the Holiday Inn and were Carrickfergus Visit 6-7 greeted by Ranger t-shirt wearing ladies at the Check-In counter. This was a great welcome for the more than 200 who attended the reunion. It was a good thing that Steve Ketzer had the Hospitality Experience of a Lifetime 8 Room up and running as it was certainly the place for story telling, laughing and renewing friend- ships. Glasses were filled promptly and trays of snacks were always available thanks to Eric Ket- Michigan-Ohio Chapter 9 zer and Jeff Hessenflow. And, if you tried taking a nap and slept through dinner, the snacks got Christmas Party you through to breakfast, right Ranger Temkin, 4D? First time reunion attendees, Lonnie Johnson, lC (one of the 9 who made it out of Cisterna), Bill Fauber, 1D, David Owen, 5E and Russell Smith, 4A were proudly wearing their Ranger Hats throughout the reunion. They had the time of their life 3 Rangers honored with 10 medals and all have said ―We‘ll be back, God willing and the creek don‘t rise.‖ Bill Fauber was disap- pointed that Ted Fleser was unable to attend as he was looking forward to talking with him since both were in 1D. -

To me it means another cold winter season is history and that nice warm spring and summer days are just around the corner. In my book any day I can put the top down is a good day… On the ship it means that my fellow brass polishers and I will be able to work outside once again and put a shine on those things you just can’t work on in the winter when the wind whips off the Delaware and forces us below decks seeking a warmer place to do our thing. This past winter we’ve spent a lot of time in the lower levels of Turret 2 polishing all the brass in that area, and believe me it’s a target rich environment for brass polishing down there. I’m so happy the Turret 2 Experience will finally be opening to the public this coming weekend. This is something that has been two years in the making and on which a long list of volunteers and staff have worked many hours to give visitors the most realistic experience possible. The first tour of this area will start at 11:00 am this Sunday; tour groups will be limited to a maximum of 15 guests. The price for this new interactive tour is $29.95. -

John Paul Jones was born 'John Paul' in 1747, on the estate of Arbigland in the Stewartry of Kirkcudbright on the southern coast of Scotland. John Paul's father was a gardener at Arbigland, and his mother was a member of Clan MacDuff. John Paul adopted the alias 'John Jones' when he fled to his brother's home in Fredericksburg, Virginia in 1773 to avoid the hangman's noose in Tobago after an incident when he was accused of murdering a sailor under his command. He began using the name 'John Paul Jones', at the suggestion of his brother. Although his naval career never saw him above the rank of Captain in the Continental Navy after his victory over the Serapis with the frigate Bonhomme Richard, John Paul Jones remains the first genuine American Naval hero, as well as a highly regarded battle commander.
