2 THE CINDERELLA STORY IN ANTIQUITY Cinderella can fairly be claimed as the best known of fairytales in modern times, as well as the first tale to be subjected to attempts at the ‘exhaustive’ collecting of its variants. It was long assumed that the story, or rather group of stories, did not date much further back than the early seventeenth century, when a recognisable form of it appeared as Basile’s La Gatta Cenerentola.1 But from time to time throughout this century discoveries have been made to show that the tale must be much older, and few who have seriously examined the evidence would be tempted to measure the tale as a whole by the yardstick of its most famous example, the version published by Charles Perrault in 1697.2 It can now be seen that a number of the Perrault features such as glass slipper, pumpkin coach, clock striking midnight, and others, are not essential, or even necessarily characteristic, of the orally transmitted story. Taken as a whole, the hundreds of versions known present the heroine under a variety of names: Cinderella, Ashiepattle and Popelutschka are the most obvious European variations; sometimes she has sisters (often less beautiful, rather than ugly), sometimes not; sometimes she has a fairy godmother helper, sometimes a helpful animal or plant, sometimes even a fairy godfather, or some combination of such forces. The basic framework for the story printed by Aarne-Thompson can be slightly abridged as follows:3 I The persecuted heroine 1. First to fourth century Greek novelists often play with the idea of their protagonists as wanderers and exiles, drawing comparisons with the Odyssey and its hero Odysseus. -

chapter 7 Sappho’s Brothers Song and the Fictionality of Early Greek Lyric Poetry André Lardinois It is a good time to be working on Sappho.1 Twelve years ago two new poems were published, including the so-called Tithonos poem, in which Sappho (or better: the I-person) complains about the onset of old age.2 The number of publications devoted to this poem was starting to dry up, when suddenly a new set of papyri was discovered in 2014. One might be forgiven for suspecting that a creative papyrologist was behind these finds, but it looks like the papyri are genuine and that we owe them to the gods and to the enduring popularity of Sappho’s poetry in antiquity. The new discovery consists of five papyrus fragments, preserving the re- mains of no less than nine poems of Sappho.3 Among these are five com- plete stanzas of a previously unknown song, which Obbink has labelled ‘Broth- ers Poem’ or ‘Brothers Song’.4 This article deals mainly with this poem, pre- served on P. Sapph. Obbink and re-edited by Obbink in the opening chapter of this volume. The argument consists of four parts. First I will say some- thing about the authenticity of the Brothers Song. Next I will discuss what we know about Sappho’s brothers from the ancient biographical tradition and other fragments of Sappho. Then I will discuss the content of the Broth- ers Song in more detail and, finally, I will present my interpretation of the song. 1 Oral versions of this paper were delivered at the universities of Amsterdam, Basel, Groningen, Leiden, Nijmegen and Oxford. -

e-ISSN 2724-1564 Lexis Num. 39 (n.s.) – Giugno 2021 – Fasc. 1 Herodotus, the Old Sappho and the Newest Sappho Giulia Donelli University of Bristol, UK Abstract This paper focuses on Herodotus’ mention of Sappho in the Histories (2.134-5). Through the analysis of some of the extant sources on the involvement of her brother Charaxus with the hetaira Doricha/Rhodopis, it advances an interpretation of Sappho’s fr. 55 V as relevant to the affair. It then draws attention to Herodotus’ descrip- tion of courtesans, in the same context, with the poetic term ἀοίδιμος. The adjective occurs only once in Homer, in the self-deprecating words that Helen speaks to Hector (Il. 6.354-8). Such Homeric echo might be understood as triggering an allusion to Sappho’s own treatment of Helen in fr. 16 V: Helen’s behaviour in that poem in fact closely matches no one other’s than Charaxus’ own. The possibility that Herodotus might be engaging with more than one Sapphic poem in this context finds a parallel in his engagement with Pindar’s poetry in 3.38, where, it has been argued, he ‘contaminates’ two distinct Pin- daric intertexts (frr. 169a and 215 S.-M.). The contamination of thematically linked poems might in turn suggest, in both cases, sympotic reperformances as possible contexts for Herodotus’ reception of Greek lyric poetry. Keywords Herodotus. 1 Fifth International Conference on the Ancient Novel Houston, Texas September 30–October 4, 2015 Abstracts Adkins, Evelyn Discourse and Power: Lucius and Milo in Apuleius’ Metamorphoses Speech, gesture, and other types of discourse such as silence and written text are tools of self- presentation as well as media for negotiating social relationships of status and power. In this paper, I examine the mechanisms of these negotiations in the fictional world of Apuleius’ Metamorphoses, focusing on the protagonist Lucius’ discursive self-fashioning in Books 1–3. Recent work on the ancient novel has examined the importance of speech, especially rhetorical speech, as one mode of characterization (Van Mal-Maeder 2001, De Temmerman 2014a & b; see also Harrison, forthcoming), while studies of the Second Sophistic have emphasized the importance of public performance and social networks in the self-definition of individuals and groups (Gleason 1995, Whitmarsh 2011, Eshleman 2012). Yet negotiations of power and identity may occur not only in public, rhetorical contexts, but also in private exchanges between individuals. Drawing on Laird’s discussions of the representation of speech and power in Latin literature (1990, 1999), I investigate Lucius’ fluid negotiations of identity and status during his private interactions with others in the opening books of the Metamorphoses. In his conversations with the strangers on the road to Hypata and his host Milo, Lucius seeks to present himself verbally as a member of the elite and an aspiring intellectual. Yet he undermines this image through his own words and actions, revealing an excessive curiosity about magic and a verbal and physical passivity that belie his claims to elite status and prefigure his metamorphosis into a speechless, enslaved animal. -

Contact Points: Memphis, Naukratis, and the Greek East HENRY P. COLBURN “During the Egyptian campaign of Cambyses [r. ca. 526–522 BC], the son of Cyrus, large numbers of Greeks came to Egypt for various reasons––to do business, naturally, to take part in the fighting, or just to see the country.”1 So wrote the Greek historian and traveler Herodotus of Halikarnassos (ca. 485–424 BC). Herodotus himself was in this third category of visitor; his own trip to Egypt took place in the mid- fifth century BC, some seventy- five years after the invasion by Cambyses.2 One of the stated goals of his work was “to preserve the fame of the important and remarkable achieve- ments produced by Greeks and non- Greeks,” and he dedicates an entire book of his Histories to Egyptian history and customs. Like the other Greeks who wrote about Egypt, such as Hekataios of Miletos and Hellanikos of Lesbos, Herodotus was especially interested in Egypt’s long history because it provided an instructive contrast to the Greeks’ own perception of history, which was characterized by myth and legend.3 For the Greeks, there was no firm distinction between myth and history, as is evident in Herodotus’s own work; mortal kings were descended from mythical heroes, and legends were employed to explain historical phenomena. In Thebes, however, Herodotus (2.143–44) met priests who could trace their lineage back 345 generations, and could point to statues of each and every one of their fore- bears! This challenge to the Greek understanding of history, as well as the great antiquity that it implied, was fascinating to Herodotus and his fellow historians. -

Signature: ………………………………………………………….. i Abstract This thesis will explore how social and political conditions in archaic Greece affected the composition of poetry for female choral performance. My primary source material will be the poetry of Alcman and Sappho. I examine the evidence suggesting that poems by both Alcman and Sappho commented on political issues, using this as a basis to argue that women in archaic Greece may have had a more vocal public presence that has previously been imagined. Rather than viewing female performance as a means of discussing purely feminine themes or reinforcing the idea of a disempowered female gender, I argue that the poetry of Alman and Sappho gives parthenoi an authoritative public voice to comment on issues in front of the watching community. Part of this authority is derived from the social value of parthenoi, who can act as economically and socially valuable points of exchange between communities, but I shall also be looking at how traditional elements of female performance genre were used to enhance female authority in archaic Sparta and Lesbos. -

According to Herodotus, the establishment of Naukratis as a settlement and trading post was a joint venture by Greeks from twelve different places: Ionians from Samos, Miletos, Chios, Teos, Phokaia and Klazomenai; Dorians from Rhodes, Knidos, Halikarnassos and Phaselis; Aiolians from Mytilene on Lesbos and the people of Aigina, the island close to Athens (see Fig. 1). Naukratis contained their sanctuaries and for a time acted as a privileged gateway for trade between Greece and Egypt: Amasis became a friend of the Greeks and granted them a number of privileges; to those who came to Egypt he gave Naukratis as a city [polis] to live in. To those who sailed there but did not want to live there he gave lands on which they might erect altars and sanctuaries to the gods. The largest and also the most famous and most used is the sanctuary called the Hellenion; it was founded jointly by cities of the Ionians – Chios, Teos, Phokaia and Klazomenai –, of the Dorians – Rhodes, Knidos, Halikarnassos and Phaselis – and one city alone of the Aiolians, Mytilene. -
