  • Modernising Tbe Lexicon of Tbe West Frisian Language
Modernising tbe Lexicon of tbe West Frisian Language Hindrik Sijens (LjouwertlLeeuwarden) A new toy in the world of modem electronic communications has arrived in Fryslän, namely Internet, and along with it e-mail. When asked what these new media might be ca lied in Frisian, the answers internet and e-mail are hardly surprising. We can see that both Fryslän and the Frisian language are also tak ing part in the digitalisation of the world. New concepts, new words in tech nology retain their original Anglo-American names in most European lan guages. This paper will deal with the process of developing and renewing the Frisian lexicon. But first I am going to give a brief introduction to Fryslän itself. Fryslän is one ofthe twelve provinces ofthe kingdom ofthe Netherlands and is situated in the northem part ofthe country. Fryslän is a flat province, much of its territory being below sea level. It is protected trom the sea by dikes. The capitalof Fryslän is Ljouwert, or Leeuwarden, as it is known in Dutch. In the past, Fryslän was an agricultural pro vin ce with more cattle living there than people. Nowadays farming still plays an important role in Fryslän's economy, but both the service industries and industry itself have also become important. Fryslän has a population of about 600,000 and approximately 55% of them consider Frisian to be their first language. While about 74% of the population claim that they can speak Frisian, 94% say that they can understand it when it is spoken, 65% claim that they can read Frisian, but only 17% say that they can write it (Gorter & Jonkman 1995:9-11).

  • [1495] O Sjorem Magaaije! Fiktyf Joadsk Etnolekt Yn 'E Fryske Literatuer
US WURK LXIX (2020), p. 38 [1495] O sjorem magaaije! Fiktyf Joadsk etnolekt yn ‘e Fryske literatuer Bouke Slofstra Abstract. In the past, Westerlauwers Friesland was already inhabited by a multilingual population, including speakers of local Frisian and non- Frisian vernaculars, the Dutch standard language and etnolects of foreign origin like those of German harvesters and Jewish merchants. Frisian literature reflects this multilingual situation to some extent. The details of it have yet to be studied in a systematic way, however. This case-study exemplifies how Jews were characterized in Frisian literature, especially drama. It turns out that the stereotypical Jewish char- acter is presented as speaking a variety of artificial and real languages. This study sheds some light on the question of how literature relates to reality, prejudice and language. It is argued that Frisian literature and multilingualism interconnect, the former existing in a multilingual reality, the latter being creatively manipulated by literary fiction. By Feike van der Ploeg komme bygelyks sprekkers fan it Hylpersk foar. Yn it wurk fan de Halbertsma‟s oppenearje stedsjers en „poepen‟ har yn har eigen taal, of alteast yn in karikatuer dêrfan. Waling Dykstra koe Biltsk en hat ek yn dy taal publisearre. Minder bekend is miskien it personaazje fan de Joadske keapman, dy‟t faak en folle yn „e Fryske skriuwerij opfierd waard, meast yn toanielstikken.

Over the last few decades, a growing concern about linguistic diversity in the world has led to an increasing awareness of minority languages, which are endangered by loss.

  • Frisian. Standardization in Progress of a Language in Decay
Frisian* Standardization in progress of a language in decay Eric Hoekstra Fryske Akademy, The Netherlands 1. Historical background The ªrst standard of the Frisian language is re¶ected in documents from the so- called Old Frisian period (c. 1200 to 1550; cf. Bremmer 2001).1 These surviving manuscripts show a considerable degree of linguistic uniformity. When Old Frisian disappeared from the historical record around 1550, Frisian lost its early standard. During the subsequent Middle Frisian Period (roughly 1550–1800) there are few signs of standardization in the modest written production. The roots of the modern Frisian standard (from 1800 to the present day) lie in the linguistic romanticism of the nineteenth century. Frisian may thus be said to have had an incipient standard language (Old Frisian), to have lost it and to have acquired a new standard. In this paper I will ªrst brie¶y discuss the Old Frisian standard and then concentrate on the origin and development of the standard of present-day Frisian. Norm selection, codiªcation, acceptance and decay in Old Frisian Little is known about the process of norm selection in Old Frisian. However, some indirect evidence may be gleaned from the type of texts that were written in Old Frisian. Old Frisian literature comprises mainly legal texts; most of the remaining documents are historical chronicles which were written for political and/or ideo- logical purposes (Johnston 2001 provides a useful overview of Old Frisian law manuscripts; charters are discussed by Vries 2001a). Apart from legal texts, there are also religious texts, historical texts as well as texts dealing with administrative issues.
