Play in TranslationBy Andrea CottonI have read an epic poem by Dr Ali and I feel sure that this play in translation will have been sensitively managed and will not have lost its nuances and mores. I recommend that you read it. You may be surprised. The classic Urdu play, Anarkali was first published in Lahore in 1922. It was written by renowned playwright, Syed Imtiaz Ali Taj and retold in the epic Indian movie, Mughal-e-Azam (1960). The story takes place in 16th century India. Prince Saleem, eldest son of Mughal Emperor, Akbar the Great has returned home after years of military service. He falls in love with Anarkali, a beautiful court dancer and wants to marry her. The Emperor objects because she is of low birth and thus, an inappropriate match for his son. This is underlined when Anrakali performs her art in the Hall of Mirrors. Her sworn enemy, Dilaram another slave-girl, has fixed a mirror so that the Emperor notices Anarkali's lustful gestures of infatuation for Saleem. He orders her to be imprisoned. Saleem defies the Emperor by visiting her prison cell where she begs him to save her as well as his own life. Saleem promises to do so, but if he is to prevail, he must face the full force of the Emperor’s will. The play has many parallels with Shakespeare’s Romeo and Juliet as the ‘star-crossed lovers’ discover that the course of true love never did run smooth. The important landmarks in this timeline are the debates about government’s responsibility towards the pro- 229 motion of education and contestations among Orientalists, Anglicists and Missionary groups about the content and scope of such education. There has been a lot of discussion about the influence of policy statements such as Macaulay’s minute on education of 1835 and Wood’s dispatch of 1854. However, comparatively little emphasis has been placed on the ideological basis of these educational policies―especially through the medium of textbooks.2 Some notable exceptions are the works of Gauri Viswanathan (1998), Sanjay Seth (2007) and Krishna Kumar (2005). Vish- wanathan’s seminal work has shown how the reading of English liter- ary texts in schools was meant to promote a certain rational worldview conducive to the acceptance of Christian values and benevolence of British rule. Seth’s nuanced study aims at showing the pedagogical processes of colonial education as a site of colonial governmentality and disciplinary regime aimed at producing desirable subjectivities.

Abbas, ‘A Letter to Mahatma Gandhi’ (Abbas, 1939) The origins of illegitimacy - 1955 Raj Kapoor’s K.A. Abbas-scripted Shri 420 (1955) is the quintessential post- War Bombay melodrama. The story of an educated youth from Allahabad who is unable to find employment, makes a fortune through gambling, finds himself embroiled in loan sharks and financiers, and is eventually rescued by the school teacher Vidya (Nargis), encourages a reading of itself as a saga of capitalism, with its hyper-visible picturing of capital literally as money - the ‘rupiyon ke jhankaar’ (the jangle of rupee coins), the only sound the otherwise deaf city can hear, as the beggar (M. Lahore is now the capital of the Pakistani State (Province) of Punjab (Panjab : the Five Rivers). A pedestrian footbridge above the Old Canal Modern Lahore has kept its charming promenades along the Old Canal though with some concessions to modern urban traffic: flyovers are being built including for pedestrians (see picture above) and perhaps the most emblematic project of the municipality of Lahore (at least in September 2012) is the building of a freeway with some ﬂ yovers for cars and buses (with a new express bus service inaugurated in December 2012). The «Bārā Darī» in Nawab Vazir Khan’ Garden An essential feature of Lahore is, as shown by the above illustration a tradition of blending Mughal style (17h and 18th Century) with colonial buildings a policy that was devised by the British authorities.
