PINE TAR & WOOD PROTECTION ASPHALT & ROOF CARE PINE TAR NAture’s own wood PROTECTION Pine tar has been used in Scandinavia for hundreds of years to protect and preserve wooden buildings, boats, jetties and eve- ryday items. As well as protecting wooden structures against rot, natural tar is also mildly antiseptic. This characteristic means that pine tar is used in a number of different pharma- ceutical and veterinary products for treating skin complaints. It is therefore a common ingredient in skin ointments, soap and shampoo, etc. For a long time pine tar was one of Sweden’s most important export items. A protective oil – direct from the forest Pine tar is a viscous blackish-brown liquid consisting of vola- tile terpene oils, neutral oils, resin acids and fatty acids. It’s the combination of these substances that allows mediaeval wood- en buildings that have been regularly treated with pine tar to still stand today. The proportion of these constituents varies in different tar qualities, depending on the type of wood, its age and the part of the tree used. Historically, resin-rich pine stumps have always been considered to give the best pine tar, as resin contains substances that protect the living tree from rot, insect infestation and so on. Since it has become harder to get hold of stumps, tree trunks and branches are now used to a greater extent. Aromatic and easily soluble Pine tar is transparent in thin layers and has a natural aromatic scent. It’s pretty much fully soluble in alcohol and turpentine, as well as almost completely compatible with fatty oils. -

Forest Service Valdosta, Georgia BEFORE discussing woods burning in naval stores, what is naval stores? First, be it understood that there are three fields within the activity, namely (1) wood distillation, or the process of obtaining the desired product from pine stumps; (2) the capture of tall oil in the sulfate pulping process, and (3) gum naval stores, or the harvesting of oleoresin or gum from standing, living pine trees, ob tained throughout a long working season of some seven months annually. Today, I shall discuss fire in its relation to the gum naval stores business. But first, how did the activity derive its odd name? There is cause for puzzlement. The story is told-with tongue in cheek-that a Secretary of the Navy, somewhat confused, but firm in his resolve to be prepared, declared: "I don't know what it is, but let's get some of it!" The term is a carry-over from the days of sail. Then the product was in prime demand. It caulked the hulls of wooden ships, and treated rigging against the erosive action of sun, rain, wind, ice, and salt water. How old is the business? We know that flammable gum featured heavily in the combustibles tossed around in ancient Mediterranean sea fights. Some writers speak with authority that it dates from the year 315 B. C. Others point to the Bible and quote from chapter and verse how Noah treated the hull of the Ark with derivatives from the 81 NORMAN R. -

C/ Severo Ochoa, 4 - 28760 Tres Cantos - Madrid (Spain) Abstract The marine structures are developed with Computer Aided Design (CAD) platforms, but every day we are looking for integrated development of the product involving all its Life Cycle. CAD system integrated with Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) and from the PLM we can conceive all the design but also control the production and include the use of the vessel. The PLM can contain information of all systems of the vessel and also all its components. If the components are designed for the Internet of Ships (IoS) it will have technology that allows to share their situation, diagnosis, functionality with the PLM system which distributes the initial design. The PLM system can use this information for knowing whether they are working properly or if we can improve its performance. It is also possible to identify whether it is necessary to make maintenance of the object or if it is necessary to replace it because its life ends or because it's working wrongly. It will be possible to determine and evaluate its performance comparing to other similar components or comparing to it different operating periods. It will also be possible to know how their performance affects the functioning of the whole product, i.e., the vessel. Furthermore, if the connection of the objects is realized with its PLM, it would be possible to record their history status, make change tracking, and know what is its function or its performance after realizing programmed maintenance. -
Varnishing Than with Any Other Stage of the Painting Process
INFO SHEET 301 UPDATED JULY 2016 VA R NISHING We get more questions about varnishing than with any other stage of the painting process. Varnishing should be an almost mechanical process undertaken to give your painting a protective coating with the surface quality you prefer (gloss, satin, etc.) and possibly an enhancement of colour contrast. But, if you leave it till the last moment and use a varnish you are not used to, you can ruin the work you are trying to protect. Anxiety and disappointment can be avoided easily if you do sample pieces using the same materials as the painting and varnish them, not the painting, until you get the effect you wanted. Water-based varnishes are tricky to apply and not removable if you dislike the effect, so we suggest they should only be used by artists who have already tried the above experiment. CHROMA SOLVENT FINISHING VARNISHES We recommend and prefer our Chroma Solvent Finishing Varnishes, because they can be used on all our Chroma paint brands, Atelier Interactive, Jo Sonja’s or Archival Oils. Application of all these varnishes is by brush (a broad house paint brush), and clean up is with mineral spirits. If applying multiple coats, allow 24 hours drying time between applications. Choose from these finishes: Gloss Solvent Finishing Varnish • Apply as is for a full gloss, usually one coat. To reduce gloss add Invisible Varnish to your taste. Try 2 parts varnish to 1 part Invisible Varnish, up to 1:1 for less sheen. NOTE: The new varnishes have an anti-mould additive which is diluted if you add turpentine, so to maintain the mould protection for tropical conditions dilute with Invisible Varnish instead. -

Shipbuilding A promising rst half, an uncertain second one 2018 started briskly in the wake of 2017. In the rst half of the year, newbuilding orders were placed at a rate of about 10m dwt per month. However the pace dropped in the second half, as owners grappled with a rise in newbuilding prices and growing uncertainty over the IMO 2020 deadline. Regardless, newbuilding orders rose to 95.5m dwt in 2018 versus 83.1m dwt in 2017. Demand for bulkers, container carriers and specialised ships increased, while for tankers it receded, re ecting low freight rates and poor sentiment. Thanks to this additional demand, shipbuilders succeeded in raising newbuilding prices by about 10%. This enabled them to pass on some of the additional building costs resulting from higher steel prices, new regulations and increased pressure from marine suppliers, who have also been struggling since 2008. Department of Agriculture The major portion of wood distillation products in the United States is obtained from forest and mill residues, chiefly beech, birch, maple, oak, and ash. Marketing of the natural byproducts recovered has been concerned traditionally with outlets for acetic acid, methanol, and charcoal. Large and lower cost production of acetic acid and methanol from other sources has severely curtailed markets formerly available to the distillation in- dustry, and has in turn created operational conditions generally unfavor- able to many of the smaller and more marginal plants. Increased demand for charcoal, which is recovered in the largest amount as a plant product, now provides a compensating factor for more favorable plant operation. The present hardwood-distillation industry includes six byproduct-recovery plants. With the exception of one smaller plant manufacturing primarily a specialty product, all have modern facilities for direct byproduct re- covery. Changing economic conditions during the past 25 years, including such factors as progressively increasing raw material, equipment, and labor costs, and lack of adequate markets for methanol and acetic acid, have caused the number of plants to be reduced from about 50 in the mid- thirties to the 6 now operating. In addition to this group, a few oven plants formerly practicing full recovery have retained the carbonizing equipment and produce only charcoal. -

Hill and Wegner: Facets of the History of New Bern Facets of the History of New Bern Michael Hill and Ansley Wegner North Carolina Office of Archives and History Survival of New Bern and Its Contribution to the Growth of a New State and Nation The affable climate and geography of the coastal plain of North Carolina made it an attractive settlement point for incoming Europeans. The land is relatively flat, and the rich soils are ideal for agriculture. The mild climate allowed for longer growing seasons, and a number of wide, slow moving rivers provided both navigation and a food source. Indeed, John Lawson, the British naturalist and explorer, described North Carolina as "a country, whose inhabitants may enjoy a life of the greatest ease and satisfaction, and pass away their hours in solid contentment."
