Although these spatial trends have been well documented, the underlying hydroclimatic mechanisms are not well understood. Since 2013, we have carried out comprehensive water budget observations at Paiku Co, an alpine lake in the central Himalayas. In this study, we investigate water storage and lake level changes on seasonal to decadal time scales based on extensive in-situ measurements and satellite observations. -

(All photos courtesy of Simone Moro) t was a cold dream, one almost 30 years in the making, on an epic moun- Itain, the biggest in the world even if it isn’t the highest. In the course of those three decades I spent a whole year either under or on the slopes of Nanga Parbat before finally realising my ambition of climbing to the summit in winter, and with a unique group of people. To realise big dreams you have to accept long waits and numerous defeats; rework strategies, teams and tactics. In a nutshell, you have to be willing to be mentally very strong as well as physically. A winter expedition to an 8,000er is not the cold version of a spring or summer expedition. It’s another world, a way of doing alpinism that’s com- pletely different; one that has to be learned, understood and experienced. Cold is certainly one of the elements with which you have to cope, but there is also the constant wind, freezing and damn loud, a wind that can force 23 24 T HE A LPINE J OURN A L 2 0 1 6 T HE F IRS T W IN T ER A SCEN T O F N A N ga P A RB at 25 many technical details and protocols that must be respected when climb- ing an 8,000er in winter. -

TIBET INSIGHT April 1-15, 2021 1 News in/from Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) Shigatse transfers 240,000 farmers and herdsmen for employment generation March 26, 2021 The Human Resource and Social Security Bureau of Shigatse reported that 240,000 farmers and herdsmen were transferred within and outside of Shigatse through the mediation of 31 labour dispatch organizations, 1662 labour cooperatives, 1547 village labour brokers, 125- county level and 38 Municipal and 9 District level transfer bases. After completion of “vocational skill training” at the Skill Service Centre based in Shigatse, trainees comprising farmers and herdsmen are transferred to different cities in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR). “Skill training” includes breeding, forest resource and waste picking, planting, woodwork and cooking in addition to tailoring skills to the needs of new and emerging industries. Under the auspices of the TAR Party Committee, Shigatse plans to build 30 more employment bases in Shigatse alone by 2021 and generate “employment” to 10,000 more farmers and herdsmen. Law EnforCement Team of TAR People’s Congress ConduCts inspeCtions in Shigatse and Lhoka March 10, 2021 Coinciding with the 62nd anniversary of the Tibetan National Uprising Day, the Law Enforcement Team of TAR People’s Congress conducted several inspections in Shigatse (Ch: Xigaze) and Lhoka (Ch: Shannan. Led by the Deputy Secretary of TAR People’s Government and Deputy Director of the Standing Committee of TAR People’s Congress, Doto (Tibetan), the inspections were carried out in villages, counties and cities in Shigatse and Lhoka. One purpose of the inspections was to oversee the progress of ethnic unity under the theme “Regulations on the Establishment of Ethnic Unity in TAR” and how the regulation is being implemented by the Local Enforcement Committees. -

Granholm DISTRIBUTION, ABUNDANCE, AND SEASONALITY The tahr is an uncommon, yearlong resident of valley foothill hardwood and open grassland habitats on the Hearst Ranch, San Luis Obispo Co. (Barrett 1966). Probably no more than a few hundred of these introduced, goat-like animals live on the ranch. Native to Himalayan region, from Kashmir to Sikkim. SPECIFIC HABITAT REQUIREMENTS Feeding: Barrett (1966) suggested that tahr on the Hearst Ranch fed primarily on grasses, forbs, and to a lesser extent on browse, such as live oak, toyon, poison-oak, and laurel. Detailed food habits studies are lacking. Cover: Rock outcrops and cliffs appear to be almost essential for escape cover and for bedding. The tahr, which evolved in a cooler climate, may require shaded woodlands and north-facing slopes in summer. Reproduction: Rock outcrops and rugged cliffs offer protection from predators during breeding. Water: No data found. Pattern: Tahr use a mixture of valley foothill hardwoods and open grasslands, interspersed with rocky outcrops for protection. In native Himalaya habitat, rocky, wooded mountain slopes and rugged hills are preferred (Nowak and Paradiso 1983). SPECIES LIFE HISTORY Activity Patterns: Active yearlong; primarily diurnal. Seasonal Movements/Migration: Non-migratory in areas of moderate topographic relief, such as the Hearst Ranch. Home Range: Bachelor herds of different sizes and age-classes are found, as well as composite bands of mature females, immature bulls, and kids (Anderson and Henderson 1961). -

SUMMER SUMMITS elcome to Summit 26 which this time focuses on mountain travel, summer rock and getting Wout in the great outdoors. For me, like many climbers and walkers, the day the clocks change is a notable date in the annual calendar. All of a sudden the winter blues start to fade away, the daffodils come into bloom, the evenings lengthen, optimism returns, plans start to become reality – it’s summertime and it's time to head for the hills! The spring and summer months are indeed a wonderful time in the climbing year-book. This year, the clocks went forward over the Easter weekend and for some of us, the sun even shone. Honeypot areas such as Snowdonia, the Lakes, the Yorkshire Dales and other National Parks were heaving with visitors: Portland, Pembroke and Gogarth bus- tled - people were out there doing it and the countryside was well and truly back in business. Personally, I had an unusually quiet Easter. Unlike many others who headed for Scotland, the Alps, Fontainebleau or Sardinia, I stayed at home, recharged my batteries, ate good food, drank Abso- lution and made plans for the year. A couple of long walks took me up and around the Kinder plateau, following in the footsteps of the Kinder trespassers on one occasion and scoping out some new lines on another. -
