E-mail: Abstract: The Rondônia Natural Resources Management Project (PLANAFLORO) was a strategic program developed in partnership between the Brazilian Government and The World Bank in 1992, with the purpose of stimulating the sustainable development and protection of the Amazon in the state of Rondônia. More than a decade after the PLANAFORO program concluded, the aim of the present work is to recover and share the information from the long-abandoned plant collections made during the project’s ecological-economic zoning phase. Most of the material analyzed was sterile, but the fertile voucher specimens recovered are listed here. The material examined represents 378 species in 234 genera and 76 families of angiosperms. Some 8 genera, 68 species, 3 subspecies and 1 variety are new records for Rondônia State. It is our intention that this information will stimulate future studies and contribute to a better understanding and more effective conservation of the plant diversity in the southwestern Amazon of Brazil. The aims of the present work were to identify and characterize the species of Apocynaceae s. str. occurring in the Carrancas region, State of Minas Gerais, Brazil. Collections were performed from 1997 to 2000 and regional representative collections were also examined. The floristic survey showed the presence of 31 species belonging to 15 genera: Aspidosperma (5 spp.), Condylocarpon (1 sp.), Forsteronia (3 spp.), Hancornia (1 sp.), Macrosiphonia (2 spp.), Mandevilla (9 spp.), Mesechites (1 sp.), Peltastes (1 sp.), Prestonia (2 spp.), Rauvolfia (1 sp.), Rhabdadenia (1 sp.), Rhodocalyx (1 sp.), Secondatia (1 sp.), Tabernaemontana (1 sp.) and Temnadenia (1 sp.). -

Based on LM and SEM observations of 56 Apocynoideae species — representing all currently recognized tribes — and eight Periplocoideae, we found strik- ing differences in vessel grouping patterns (radial multiples vs. large clusters) between the mainly nonclimbing apocynoid tribes (Wrightieae, Malouetieae, Nerieae) and the climbing lineages (remaining Apocynoideae and Periplocoideae). The presence of large vessel clusters in combination with fi bers in the ground tissue characterizing the climbing Apocynoideae and Periplocoideae clearly contrasts with the climbing anatomy of the rauvolfi oids (solitary vessels plus tracheids in ground tissue), supporting the view that (1) the climbing habit has evolved more than once in Apocynaceae, (2) the three nonclimbing apocynoid tribes are basal compared to the climbing apocynoids, and (3) Periplocoideae belong to the crown clade. -

Represented in the Neotropics by about 100 genera and 1600 species of which 80 genera and about 1350 species are twining vines, lianas or facultative climbing subshrubs; found in diverse habitats, such as rain, moist, gallery, montane, premontane and seasonally dry forests, savannas, scrubs, Páramos and Punas. Diagnostics: Twiners with simple, opposite or verticillate leaves. Climbing sterile Apocynaceae are distinguished Mandevilla hirsuta (Rich.) K.
