Historical reports of H. halichoeri occurring in seals from Endoparasitic mite German waters date back to the end of the 19th century. However, with the disappearance of the grey seal from Coevolution German waters as a consequence of human over-exploitation, the mite vanished from the records and the fauna Recolonisation found in Germany for more than a century. Although a stranding network has been monitoring marine mammal Halichoerus grypus health along the German coasts since the mid 1980s with extensive post-mortem investigations, this study re- ports the first and subsequent findings of H. halichoeri in grey and harbour seals from the North and Baltic Sea from 2014 onwards. The re-emergence of this endoparasitic mite in North and Baltic Sea habitats seems to have occurred simultaneously with the recolonisation of its primary host, the grey seal. -

Gressitt and Miss Setsuko Nakata, of Bishop Museum, Honolulu, for a fine series of all stages of this interesting halarachnine from Antarctica. The opportunity is therefore taken to supplement existing descriptions, and to note new synonymies. Halarachne miroungae Ferris Halarachne miroungae Ferris, 1925, Parasitology 17: 166; From nasal passages of elephant seal (or sea-elephant), Mirounga angustirostris (Gill), California. Halarachne taita Eichler, 1958, Zool. Gart., Leipzig 24: 54; From Mirounga leonina (Lin naeus) originating from South Georgia. New Synonymy. Halarachne erratica Fain & Mortelmans, 1959, Soc. Roy. Zool. Anvers, Bull. 12: 22; A single specimen from larynx of gentoo penguin, Pygoscelis papua Forster, kept in same enclosure as Mirounga leonina originating from Kerguelen I. New Synonymy. Female'. Idiosoma 1700-1850/< long in stained and somewhat deformed material. One specimen mounted directly from spirit is larger, 1980/J long. Opisthosoma saccate; cuticle unsclerotized, with several pairs of small setae and pores both dorsally and ventrally. Dorsal shield almost entirely restricted to podosomal region, 690-700 /JL long in most spe cimens, but occasionally as long as 740 JLL. Surface closely punctate, but not as heavily so as sternal shield. The punctations surround a regular pattern of muscle attachments, com prising 10 zones as follows: 2 minute zones in mid-line towards front, and 4 much more extensive zones along each side, 3rd pair being less discrete than the others, and 4th pair by far the longest. -

Felix The role of parasites in the lives and deaths of marine mammals has been scrutinized by biologists for decades, but the scientific literature prior to 1978 has been difficult to acquire and time-consuming to search. Now this new and extensive bibliography gives researchers a convenient resource for reviewing the classical literature on parasites of marine mammals so that historical infection prevalence and geographical distribution can be easily and properly assessed. During necropsy of southern sea otters (Enhydra lutra Sea otter nereis) from California submitted to the Marine Wildlife Veterinary Care and Research Center's Sea Otter Acarology Necropsy Program between 1999 and 2017, pathologists occasionally observed nasopulmonary mites infesting Marine parasites the respiratory tracts. Infestation was sometimes accompanied by lesions reflective of mite-associated host tissue Enhydra lutris damage and respiratory illness. Our objectives were to estimate prevalence of nasopulmonary mites, determine Halarachne halichoeri the taxonomic identity of the observed mites, and create a DNA reference for these organisms in southern sea otters as an aid in population management. Using unique morphological characteristics discerned via light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM), we identified the mites as Halarachne halichoeri, a species typically asso- ciated with harbor seals (Phoca vitiluna). The 18S, 16S, 28S and ITS1-2 genetic regions were sequenced and submitted to GenBank.
