While my name may be the one on the cover, this work is the product of many things: an idea, a place in time, a place in space, and most importantly, a group of outstanding people have been there for me along the way to offer their thoughts, help and encouragement. I’d like to take these opening pages to thank them and recognize all of their hard work. First I’d like to thank my promotor, Pieter Muysken. He has been a constant source of ideas and support throughout these last four years. The topic of the thesis itself, argument marking in South American languages, was his own creation. He planted a seed in my mind—an idea—and helped it grow. He watered the seed by sharing the funds from his KNAW professorship and ERC grant to ensure that I had the time and resources to do the job right. He pruned my ideas as they grew, always with a soft touch, making sure that I wasn’t just producing an intellectual thicket. If it weren’t for Pieter, this project would have never happened. Many thanks are also owed to my co-promotors Mily Crevels and Hein van der Voort. They were always willing to share their wealth of experience and insight with me when I needed it most. Hein was there for me from the moment I arrived in the Netherlands, he helped me keep my thoughts straight and made sure I kept going down the right track. Mily really came through for me when it counted. She tirelessly read through multiple versions of all of my chapters and it was her keen attention to detail that helped my ideas stay afloat. She always seemed to know what I needed, whether it was a little shove forward, some reining in, or just a friendly chat over some coffee. This research is a testament to the time it was written in. Such an ambitous project would not have been possible just a decade ago. I am so grateful for the careful and difficult work put in by all of the field linguists who produced the grammars that I used in this study. Without them, and the patient and intelligent indigenous teachers they have collaborated with, we’d still be in the dark ages of language research in South America. Many have surely endured hardship in the name of science, leaving behind their families for extended x periods, battling exotic illnesses and traveling far outside of their comfort zones. In this course we will read and discuss ethnographies and theoretical works about the languages and cultures of the continent. Our goal is to learn about the distinctiveness of particular indigenous communities, their languages, rituals, and everyday life and struggles, as well as understand general features of Amerindian cosmologies and practices. We will also discuss the effects of and responses to contact with national societies. The particular contribution of Amerindian ethnographic material to the anthropological concepts of “language” and “culture” will be the central concern of the course. Prerequisites While there is no mandatory prerequisite for this course, background in linguistic anthropology is essential.   • On Numeral Complexity in Hunter-Gatherer Languages
    On numeral complexity in hunter-gatherer languages PATIENCE EPPS, CLAIRE BOWERN, CYNTHIA A. HANSEN, JANE H. HILL, and JASON ZENTZ Abstract Numerals vary extensively across the world’s languages, ranging from no pre- cise numeral terms to practically infinite limits. Particularly of interest is the category of “small” or low-limit numeral systems; these are often associated with hunter-gatherer groups, but this connection has not yet been demonstrated by a systematic study. Here we present the results of a wide-scale survey of hunter-gatherer numerals. We compare these to agriculturalist languages in the same regions, and consider them against the broader typological backdrop of contemporary numeral systems in the world’s languages. We find that cor- relations with subsistence pattern are relatively weak, but that numeral trends are clearly areal. Introduction Numerals are intriguing as a linguistic category: they are lexical elements on the one hand, but on the other they are effectively grammatical in that they may involve a generative system to derive higher values, and they interact with grammatical systems of quantification. Numeral systems are particularly note- worthy for their considerable crosslinguistic variation, such that languages may range from having no precise numeral terms at all to having systems whose limits are practically infinite. As Andersen (2005: 26) points out, numerals are thus a “liminal” linguistic category that is subject to cultural elaboration.     65 Cadernos de Etnolingüística A grammatical description of Warao imperatives: Formal brevity and morphological complexity Allegra Robertsona and Konrad Rybkab aUniversity of California, Berkeley, bMusée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac Abstract Warao is a morphologically complex language isolate, spoken in Guyana and Venezuela. This paper focuses on the critically endangered Guyanese dialect. First-hand data are used to provide a descriptive analysis of Warao imperative constructions, identify their grammatical features and illocutionary forces, and clarify relevant distinctions concerning telicity. The Warao imperative mood is composed of canonical (2nd singular and 2nd plural) and non-canonical (1st person and 3rd person) imperatives, which are expressed by a set of person-specific verbal suffixes. Both canonical and non-canonical imperatives are negated by the same standard negator. These imperatives commonly express instructions, requests, invitations, warnings, prohibitions, and optatives. As compared to verb forms in other moods, Warao imperatives are syntactically and formally simple; however, the imperative suffixes attach to the morphologically complex Warao verb, thus adding complexity to the compositional meaning of the imperative. In addition to bearing numerous other affixes, the Warao imperatives are often marked as telic. The common marking of telicity in the imperative has led to the reassessment of previous analyses by Osborn (1959) and Romero-Figueroa (2003). The ways in which Warao imperatives adhere to and differ from cross-linguistic trends are also explored. This paper draws on Speech Act Theory, as well as Dixon’s Basic Linguistic Theory more broadly.     Languages of the Middle Andes in areal-typological perspective: Emphasis on Quechuan and Aymaran Willem F.H. Adelaar 1. Introduction1 Among the indigenous languages of the Andean region of Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, northern Chile and northern Argentina, Quechuan and Aymaran have traditionally occupied a dominant position. Both Quechuan and Aymaran are language families of several million speakers each. Quechuan consists of a conglomerate of geo- graphically defined varieties, traditionally referred to as Quechua “dialects”, not- withstanding the fact that mutual intelligibility is often lacking. Present-day Ayma- ran consists of two distinct languages that are not normally referred to as “dialects”. The absence of a demonstrable genetic relationship between the Quechuan and Aymaran language families, accompanied by a lack of recognizable external gen- etic connections, suggests a long period of independent development, which may hark back to a period of incipient subsistence agriculture roughly dated between 8000 and 5000 BP (Torero 2002: 123–124), long before the Andean civilization at- tained its highest stages of complexity. Quechuan and Aymaran feature a great amount of detailed structural, phono- logical and lexical similarities and thus exemplify one of the most intriguing and intense cases of language contact to be found in the entire world. Often treated as a product of long-term convergence, the similarities between the Quechuan and Ay- maran families can best be understood as the result of an intense period of social and cultural intertwinement, which must have pre-dated the stage of the proto-lan- guages and was in turn followed by a protracted process of incidental and locally confined diffusion.

    Native American Languages, indigenous languages of the native peoples of North, Middle, and South America. The precise number of languages originally spoken cannot be known, since many disappeared before they were documented. In North America, around 300 distinct, mutually unintelligible languages were spoken when Europeans arrived. Of those, 187 survive today, but few will continue far into the 21st century, since children are no longer learning the vast majority of these. In Middle America (Mexico and Central America) about 300 languages have been identified, of which about 140 are still spoken. South American languages have been the least studied. Around 1500 languages are known to have been spoken, but only about 350 are still in use. These, too are disappearing rapidly. Classification A major task facing scholars of Native American languages is their classification into language families. (A language family consists of all languages that have evolved from a single ancestral language, as English, German, French, Russian, Greek, Armenian, Hindi, and others have all evolved from Proto-Indo-European.) Because of the vast number of languages spoken in the Americas, and the gaps in our information about many of them, the task of classifying these languages is a challenging one. In 1891, Major John Wesley Powell proposed that the languages of North America constituted 58 independent families, mainly on the basis of superficial vocabulary resemblances. At the same time Daniel Brinton posited 80 families for South America. These two schemes form the basis of subsequent classifications. In 1929 Edward Sapir tentatively proposed grouping these families into superstocks, 6 in North America and 15 in Middle America.

Sua população, segundo meu censo de julho de 2001, é estimada em 241 pessoas. São todos falantes da língua indígena, sendo os homens falantes do português também, língua franca no Parque. As mulheres, geralmente, compreendem mas não falam português, devido, provavelmente, à timidez, ou a um tipo de bilingüismo: observei que podem me compreender quando falo português, mas falam comigo em juruna. Tal comportamento se estende a outras línguas xinguanas, pelo visto (por exemplo, entendem suyá, língua jê, mas respondem em juruna).
