Basavarajappa* Entomology Laboratory, DOS in Zoology, University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore-570 006, India ABSTRACT: Agriculture ecosystems have provided congenial habitat for various butterfly species. The Papilionidae and Nymphalidae family member’s most of their life cycle is depended on natural plant communities amidst agriculture ecosystems. To record few butterflies viz., Papilio polytes, Graphium agamemnon, Ariadne merione and Junonia hierta, agriculture ecosystems were selected randomly and visited frequently by adapting five-hundred-meter length line transects during 2014 to 2016. Study sites were visited during 0800 to 1700 hours and recorded the ovipositing behaviour of gravid female of these butterfly species by following standard methods. Eggs along with the host plant leaves / shoot / twigs were collected in a sterilized Petri dish and brought to the laboratory for further studies. Eggs were maintained under sterilized laboratory conditions till hatching. Newly hatched larvae were fed with their preferred host plants foliage and reared by following standard methods. P. polytes and G. agamemnon and A. merione and J. hierta developmental stages included egg, larva, pupa and adult and these stages have showed significant variation (F=21.35; P>0.01). Further, all the four species had four moults and five instars in their larval stage. However, including larval period, pupal duration was also varied considerably among these species. Further, overall life cycle completed in 43, 32.5 to 40, 21 to 30 and 21 to 29 days by P. -

E-mail: Abstract: Quantification of butterfly diversity and species richness is of prime importance for evaluating the status of protected areas. Permanent line transect counts were used to record species richness and abundance of butterfly communities of different habitat types in Trishna wildlife sanctuary. A total of 1005 individuals representing 59 species in 48 genera belonging to five families were recorded in the present study. Of these, 23 species belonged to the family Nymphalidae and accounted for 38.98% of the total species and 45.20% of the total number of individuals. Mature secondary mixed moist deciduous forest showed the maximum diversity and species richness, while exotic grassland showed minimum diversity and species richness. Out of 59 species, 31 are new records for Tripura state, while 21 are unique species and nine are listed in the threatened category. This study revealed that mature secondary forests are more important for butterfly communities, while exotic grasslands have a negative impact on species composition. Therefore, the current study was designed and carried out during the past decade. A list of LFPs for 207 butterfly species (Super family Papilionoidea) of Sri Lanka is presented based on local studies and includes 785 plant-butterfly combinations and 480 plant species. Many of these combinations are reported for the first time in Sri Lanka. The impact of introducing new plants on the dynamics of abundance and distribution of butterflies, the possibility of butterflies being pests on crops, and observations of LFPs of rare butterfly species, are discussed. Abstract | Life history of the long tailed blue butterfly also called pea blue, Lampides boeticus (Linnaeus) with respect to larval stages, diet consumption, exploitation and the length of lifae phase was designed to perform. The study was conducted between January to December 2014 at Yogi Vemana University Campus (78°42’46.429’ E, 14°28’10.542’ N) and Campus Botanical garden (78°42’44.539’ E, 14°28’25.59’ N), Kadapa, India. Lampides boeticus completes its life cycle in 15-22 days (Eggs 2-3 days, Larvae: 8-12days, Pre-Pupa:2-3days, Pupa: 3-4 days). The standards of food indices across the instars include Approximate Digestibility (AD): 90 – 96.07%; Growth Rate (GR): 0.51 - 0.64, Con- sumption index (CI): 11.54 - 5.95, Efficiency of Conversion of Digested food (FCD): 03.98 – 11.25%; Efficiency of Conversion of Ingested food (ECD): 03.85 – 10.80% as measured in the research laboratory. The relatively high values of ECD and ECI partially explain the ecological success of this butterfly in the present study enviroment. Tara and Madhvi Gupta Department of Zoology, University of Jammu Jammu-180,006, India *Corresponding author: Anu Bala Abstract The present article incorporates detailed field observations of family Pieridae in Jammu region at different altitudes during spring, summer and autumn seasons of 2012-2013. The study revealed that 13 species of butterflies belonging to 10 genera of family Pieridae exist in the study area. Most members of Family Pieridae are white or yellow. Pieridae is a large family of butterflies with about 76 genera containing approximately 1,100 species mostly from tropical Africa and Asia. Keywords :Butterflies, India, Jammu, Pieridae. Introduction Jammu and Kashmir is the northernmost state of India. It consists of the district of Bhaderwah, Doda, Jammu, Kathua, Kishtwar, Poonch, Rajouri, Ramban, Reasi, Samba and Udhampur. Most of the area of the region is hilly and Pir Panjal range separates it from the Kashmir valley and part of the great Himalayas in the eastern districts of Doda and Kishtwar. The main river is Chenab. Jammu borders Kashmir to the north, Ladakh to the east and Himachal Pradesh and Punjab to the south. In east west, the line of control separates Jammu from the Pakistan region called POK. The climate of the region varies with altitude. The order Lepidoptera contains over 19,000 species of butterflies and 100,000 species of moths worldwide. -

E-mail : [email protected] Submitted : 22.05.2016 Accepted : 13.07.2016 Published : 30.08.2016 Abstract Studies were conducted on identification of the breeding sites of ten species of butterflies (Papilio demoleus, Eurema hecabe , Catopsilia pomona , Colias fieldii, Hypolimnas missipus, Danaus chrysipuss, E.core, Euchrysops cnejus, Catocrysops Strabo and Tarucus nara for their future conservation based on their seasonal abundance under different habitats under naturally available wild conditions in Gir Protected Areas of Gujarat. Some important behaviour such as mud-puddling, gully-bottoming, sun basking, higher flying etc. are very common activities required to understand the natural breeding phenomenon of butterflies. The study conducted in natural wild conditions in GPA revealed that all the ten species of butterflies exhibited a significantly positive response in their population built up as well as in their survival rate which may be due to the availability of optimal requirements of food and shelter in the wild-conditions of GPA. Whereas in semi-wild conditions of the AFRI Model Nursery, the butterflies are restricted within a limited area with specific number of host-plants. In addition, these areas are lack of natural water source like rivers and ponds etc, and lack of such requirements bring changes in the behavior of butterflies and indirectly exert negative influence on their life- span. -
