Kandhro1 1Department of Entomology, 2Department of Plant Pathology, Sindh Agriculture University, Tandojam, Pakistan ABSTRACT Collection of family Pieridae from Tandojam area was done with the aim to enrich our knowledge on the diversity of these economically important families in our agro-ecosystem. The experiment was conducted at the Insect Systematic Laboratory, Department of Entomology Sindh Agriculture University Tandojam. During the study 62 members of family Pieridae were collected from various localities of Tandojam. Results showed that the family Pieridae revealed the occurrence of 09 species under two sub-families; Pierinae with the record of one species and Coliadinae with eight species record. A total of 88 species under 56 genera and 10 families were identified. The number of identified species and their percentage were recorded family wise as: Nymphalidae (21, 23.86%), Pieridae (20, 22.73%), Papilionidae (13, 14.77%), Danaidae (10, 11.36%), Lycaenidae (9, 10.23%), Satyridae (8, 9.09%), Hespiriidae (4, 4.54%); and those of the families Acraeidae, Amathusidae and Riodinidae (1, 1.14%). New Records of Butterflies (Lepidoptera) from the Eastern Caroline Islands, Micronesia1 Donald W. Buden,2,5 Donald P. Sands,3 and W. John Tennent4 Abstract: Twenty-three new locality records are presented for nine species of butterflies (Lepidoptera) from 11 islands and island groups in the eastern Car- oline Islands, Micronesia. None is endemic; most occur widely in the Indo- Australian region and the islands of the western Pacific. The Lycaenidae were the most well-represented family with at least eight species. The nymphalid Hypolimnas bolina was the most frequently encountered species, occurring on all 11 island groups. Pakin Atoll, which was visited on two different occasions for a total of 5 days, was the only island group visited during this study where but- terflies were not seen. They are very sensitive and are severely affected by the slightest variations in the environment. They form an important biota of the class Insecta, belonging to the order Lepidoptera. Butterflies have large, often brightly coloured and conspicuous wings used for fluttering type of flight. They form an important part of food chain and are good bio-indicators for evaluation of habitat change and variations in landscape structures. Butterflies and their caterpillars are dependent on specific host plants, thus the diversity of butterfly indirectly reflects the plant diversity of a particular area. Hence, the present study was undertaken to study the butterfly diversity of Karnatak University (KU) campus, Dharwad, in order to create a base line data for further research. In the present survey a total number of 36 species belonging to 25 genera falling under five different families were observed, identified and photographed. The members of the Nymphalidae family found to be dominated with 16 species under 11 genera followed by Pieridae (8), Papilionidae (6), Lycaenidae (4) and Hesperidae (2). The abundance of butterfly species in a particular area is directly proportional to the type and abundance of different flowers, plants in those respective areas. -

Basavarajappa* Entomology Laboratory, DOS in Zoology University of Mysore, Manasagangotri, Mysore-570 006, India ABSTRACT: Field studies were carried out by following various standard methods to record the natural enemies of 19 butterfly species during Rabi and Kharif crops amidst agriculture ecosystems of Chamarajanagar District (110401 to 120481 NL and 740521 to 760071 EL) in south Deccan plateau at southern tip of Karnataka State, India. The oviposition and pupation of butterfly species were critically observed for the parasites and predators attack. The death of egg, pupa, larva and adult butterfly species due to parasitoids and spiders was recorded. The parasitoid, Brachymeria jambolana (Hymenoptera: Chalcididae) was more troublesome to the pupa of G. doson and E. core. Around 25 to 27 B. jambolana adult individuals were collected respectively from the pupa of G. doson and E. core. Moreover spider species viz., Selenopes, Zygeilla, Argiope, Hippasa, and Rhene become common predators to 16 butterfly species in this part of the State. Thus, parasitoids and spiders infestation could cause loss to several insect species including protected species like E. core. As natural enemy’s interferences is natural in the wild/open cultivated conditions, it could become one of the major reasons to reduce local butterfly diversity. Hence, there is a dire need to understand about the interaction of parasitoid species with butterfly species which are under threat and whose presence is very essential for the restoration of local biodiversity. -

The Butterflies ofPohnpei, Eastern Caroline Islands, Micronesia1 Donald W Buden2 andJacqueline Y Miller3 Abstract: Fourteen species of butterflies are recorded from Pohnpei, Micro nesia, seven for the first time. None is endemic to the island; all are widely dis tributed in the western Pacific, including parts of Indo-Australia, with many extending into or beyond southeastern Asia. A long history of plant intro ductions and agricultural experimentation may have facilitated dispersal of but terflies to the island and provided a broad selection of host plants for those arriving otherwise unassisted. At least one, and possibly two or more, un identified species apparently confined to deep forest habitats were seen but not collected during this study. Compared with the local odonate fauna, the butter flies of Pohnpei differ in reaching their greatest abundance and species diversity in the lowlands, in lacking endemic species, and probably in having a higher turnover rate. Abstract The present study was carried out from Sindh, Pakistan during 2012-2013. A total of 1,964 specimens of butterflies were collected from the different localities of Sindh, Pakistan. The identification was done through available literature. Among collected specimens, 67 species belonging to 41 genera of 16 subfamilies falling in 6 families were identified. Our result showed that Lycaenidae was the richest family; comprising 19 species followed by Pieridae comprising 18 species, Nymphalidae 11 species, Hesperiidae 11 species, Danaidae comprising 5 species and Papilionidae comprising 03 species were reported. This research aimed to determine the diversity of butterfly species at Kondang Merak beach. This research was conducted in April 2013. The butterfly was captured using insect nett with standart walk method. This research found the total of 40 butterflies species belong to 5 families, i.e. Pieridae (15 species), Nymphalidae (14 species), Papilionidae (5 spesies), Lycaenidae (5 spesies) and Hesperidae (1 species). Ideopsis juventa from family of Nymphalidae is the most abundant species in this area. Further research is necessary in order to provide more complete database about the diversity of butterfly at Kondang Merak beach. The study has been carried from August 2014 – July 2015 in Pachamalai hills of Eastern Ghats in Tamilnadu. In the ecological site that has been observed in the native plant species of the Eastern Ghats especially in Vitex negundo, Ehretia pubescens, Premna serratifolia and Pavetta indica as well as observed in Prosopis juliflora, an invasive plant species. This study reveals that some of the native nectar host plants play a vital role in attracting butterflies and increasing the diversity of butterflies. Vitex negundo, which acts as a primary nectar host plant for a variety of species is studied in detail.
